Well?
I got a lot of hours from Day of Defeat (mod and later standalone game for Half-Life).
Many of the Wolfenstein games as well, specifically Return to Castle Wolfenstein (it's historic fiction, of course, but WWII nonetheless).
COD 2 was excellent, and Brothers in Arms even better (where's my sequel, dammit?).
Honorable mention: Red Orchestra and Hell Let Loose; both a bit too sim for me to really get into, but still really excellent games.
Call of Duty: WWII. I finished it about a week ago and I loved every second of it. It's amazing. I've only played the single player campaign, though.
Takes place in 1944 but likely doesn't fit the bill as WWII but still..
Battlefield Bad Company 2. :P
Call of Duty 2 and Company of Heroes 2 are the two that instantly come to mind when I think WW2 games. There been quite a few great ww2 games though.
@ghosts4ever: You should play Company Of Heroes my friend, it will expand your horizons beyond FPS and 1 JRPG.

played long ago.
for non FPS I prefer Commandos. isometric stealth strategy game over RTS.
@uninspiredcup: also COD2 was absolutely brilliant
I remember D-day scene as kid. I was blown away by huge firefight, feel like war instead of Hollywood movie, every other soldier is useful unlike other war FPS where friendly AI are useless.
it has war feel of saving private Ryan.

Ok maybe I played more WW2 games than I remember. Company of Heroes is a good one. I haven't tried three yet.
Commandos and Commandos 2 comes to mind.
You excited for the new Commandos? It'll be on game pass day one.

Ohoho, how did I forget. Day of defeat was my life at one point. I got it for free when I activated Half Life on steam all the way back in 2003.
The rest that you listed are excellent as well. RTCW Is a game I still replay a lot. It's a game where I had insane amounts of fun in online, you could write your name in color, you could teamplay or lame as much as you wanted. You could be evil or good, kinda like in real life.
COD and BIA are excellent franchises as well.

Went to Normandy, saw Pointe-Du-Hoc, came home and immediately started replaying COD 2

These games are so good!
I haven’t played a whole lot but the Medal of Honor games were really great back in the day. I loved playing the one on PSP.
Not the best but once in while get a strong itch to go back and play the Close Combat series, Close Combat 3: The Russian Front being my favorite.
The series went through a series of name changes but it's back to mostly the original names for series and games, and now available on Steam, whereas previously only available through a single niche digital retailer at a jacked up price.
Commandos and Commandos 2 comes to mind.

Go check out Partisans: 1941. It's Commandos but from Russian resistance perspective. It's also only $4.50 on Steam right now 😀
Also looking forward to the new Commandos game.
Love how Mimimi breathed life into this genre with their games before they went out of business.
*Oh yeah and Last Train Home, while we are at it. Not quite as stealth-focused as Commandos, but still a great WWII tactics game.
@mrbojangles25: loved day of defeat, i played alot of DoD and CS1.6. DoD and CS Source. i was more of a DoD fan than CS.. id be the one freind asking for everyone to switch to day of defeat from CS.... Such a fun mp game
I remember the maps being really great and well balanced.
I think for a period of 10 years, it certainly felt like the only games I was playing were Diablo 2, Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, and Team Fortress.
Call of Duty: WWII. I finished it about a week ago and I loved every second of it. It's amazing. I've only played the single player campaign, though.
I enjoyed it too, first game that came to mind for me. Multiplayer was good also, even if a bit easy to snipe.
2 WW2 comes to mind is, Hell let Loose and most of all, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun. That intro you’re being attacked in Pearl Harbor doesn’t get anymore WW2 than that.
How do you "get into" Hell Let Loose?
Is it as easy as just joining a server and playing?
Seems like most folks are in clans and go on Discord and such. Any recommendations for starting out? I Tend to favor support classes (so maybe medic or engineer, perhaps vehicle driver?)
I just downloaded it, was thinking of giving it a go this evening.
@mrbojangles25: You might be able to find a Discord group for Hell Let Loose which will allow you to at least get to know the other players so it's not completely random. Discord link: Hell Let Loose Discord
5 years ago, I only played it during a free weekend, but it felt like a more hardcore version of Battlefield to me. Post Scriptum leans more hardcore, but I still think that it's more streamlined/accessible than something like ARMA. I can never really get into ARMA because I'll take a break from it and then forget all of the complex controls. Hope this helps and good luck.
Call me whenever your heart’s desire but from my experience the greatest WWll game that I played was BF5.
Yeah it didn’t really have the “D Day” experience or many of the more famous theaters of WWll but some of the mechanics were truly remarkable for a BF game and FPS in general, IMHO of course.

Yeah it is a great multiplayer FPS, they really did a lot to make squad combat more meaningful without requiring more "hardcore" steps such as joining a clan, very stranger friendly.
Looks great, runs great, good gameplay mechanics. Only real issue is they tacked on that Battle Royale thing.
Blazing Angels 2. It's too arcadey for most flight sim fans, but that's why I like it. Similar to Crimson Skies, though a bit more grounded. Kinda got overshadowed by Wings of Prey/IL2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey, which is probably the better game if I'm being objective.
Red Orchestra 2
There isn't anything like it, and if you're willing to learn it and give yourself time to make mistakes and catch up, it's an experience you'll never wanna leave.
I was going to say this, but then I remembered Company of Heroes exists.
I'd say CoH1 for the singleplayer, CoH2 for the multiplayer, would be my top WW2 games. Company of Heroes 2 is my most played game ever by a pretty wide margin.
but for FPS, Red Orchestra 2 + the Rising Storm expansion are definitely my favourites as well. the atmosphere, immersion and quality of the gunplay is unmatched.
Hell Let Loose is cool as well, but I don't think the gunplay is Tripwire quality, and I preferred the more focused maps of RO2/RS
