Lighting and effects. Without those, you have no atmosphere.

lighting. If half life 2 didnt have such great lighting it wouldnt look nearly as good. Same goes for crysis and killzone 2.

HDR can be considered an effect. Half-life 2 had good enviromental lighting, but not animated lighting, for example Doom 3 had really great animated lighting.

For its time, Half Life 2 had very good lighting. Play around with lights in Garry's Mod sometime and you'll be able to see the Source engine's lighting capabilities a little better.

Yeah Source engine uses mostly pre-baked lighting, which is all static. Doom 3 was really one of the first games to have completely dynamic lighting. Now you have games like Crysis that have these beatiful sunset/sunrise scenes...it's pretty obvious Source is using a lot of older tech. But it still looks pretty good for it's system requirements, I'd say.

If you mean technically i suppose it would be textures and poly's as they're the foundation.

Overall, i'd say artstyle and performance, as the greatest graphics in the world are useless if the game runs like crap.

I agree.

I don't care how real it looks unless it's Gran Turismo.

And then all that matters is car models in replay mode and nothing else.

Draw distance. I was going to say textures, but nothing is quite as awesome as looking over miles of open expanse like in halo 3 or Crysis.

Other than artistic style. Technically it's the textures for me how detailed they are and small details thrown here and there for everything overall, character models, environments, weapons, fire, water etc...

I don't know any of the technical terms but I'll just list games that really do the job for me;

Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Banjo 3, Prince of Persia, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Half Life 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Mirror's Edge (almost a flawless presentation), Star Ocean 4, Resident Evil 5, and a few others. Lol :P

it has to be ligthing, atmosphere and great art style

a game may have the best textures ever!!!! but without the lighting and atmosphere and art to compliment it, its as good having no textures at all!

this is the reason so many fanboy arguements about a game having superior textures fail cos that dont mean squat without the rest of the packagae

Polygons >>>>>>>>> everything else

Where's the old school polygon love? :( I need a game with 9999 enemies on screen or a tree with infinite leaves. I don't care in video games are in black and white, but without polygons, there's no 3D world to venture in. I need a game to render so many poly counts that we can have grounds that are not flat or even better with movable dust laying all over the ground.

texture is inferior to polygons, if you can have different colour for each polygons, then you can leave the rest to lighting

(assume the frame rate is stable and above 24) For graphic it goes like this Polygon > physics > draw distance (depends on the game) > lighting > texture

As for art style... think sega saturn era. How I missed all those quirky and lovable, yet weird and funny looking things. I need more of those!!

Silky Smooth in motion with superior lighting & textures.

In other words; easy on the eyes.
