Back in the 90s PC gaming was insanely popular, consoles couldn't even compete. But now things are a bit different. Consoles are looking more and more like cheep gaming PCs and the price to have an actual state-of-the-art gaming PC keeps getting higher. So what is the popularity of PC gaming today?

I think it's still going strong. I mean, look at how well Left 4 Dead sold.

No it doesn't please stop talking.. If anything pc gaming is getting cheaper.. A video card like a radeon 4850 is capable of playing every game including Crysis at high settings and can be had for as cheap as $100 or even less.. You can get a amd dual core for even cheaper.. If anything pc gaming is getting cheaper because of the stagnation atm in graphics and overall hardware demands.

I think some genres are overly represented while others are neglected to varying degress.

That can be said for the consoles as well though.

It's sad to say, but it's not quite as big as it was back in the 90's. Back then, gaming stores had huge sections devoted to PC games. Now, there's usually just a small area or a single shelf.

As was just said, PC gaming is hardly getting more and more expensive. On the contrary, getting a PC that runs most games on highest settings (excluding highest AA/AF) and high resolutions is probably cheaper than ever. Where does this myth that PC gaming is so prohibitly expensive come from?

Popularity of PC gaming may have declined somewhat, but if you take a look outside North America, PC gaming is still huge. Last time I checked, PC gaming was still bigger here than console gaming is (I live in Sweden).

PC Gaming is a lot cheaper. You over-estimate the intelligence of the average consumer.

.... That has nothing to do with it.. As the stock in the stores been decreasing, the direct download online market has been increasing.. Steam is getting huge amounts of sales, often times at reduced prices to which stores just can't compete with so they decide to not carry.. Or companies like EB games/Gamestop begin their own direct download service.

Proof please. I could build a decent budget rig that could smash consoles. God bless AMD and ATI!

PC to the more casual market has 2 "big games" and that is WOW and The Sims. Anything out of those 2 games you will find a more PC hardcore gamer auidence. With games such as CnC out for consoles etc the average consumer will go to the Console. PC gaming will not be killed off by consoles if the trends follow just dont expect block buster games to be coming out to the PC. :(

If its anything it increased sense the 90s with giants like World of Warcraft.. And the fact that the pre built average consumer machines are actually becoming powerful enough to play some of the more popular games of today.

Really, the problem is that gaming stores are becoming too console centric. The EB Games in my city has such a piss poor PC section that it's embarrassing to even call it a gaming store. One rack of PC games, consisting of mainly games from a few years back. They never have any of the new releases on the shelf whatsoever. Whereas when I go to my local Future Shop, they have 2 long shelves all consisting of PC games. It gets the same treatment as all of the other platforms and it's a much better gaming store than the one that's supposed to strictly be one.

Look behind the computer platform and you'll seek a great lack of inspiration among many users in our community, including myself. We've let the developers play with our model, now we're lost in a world called mult-platform. Maybe time will cure it, who knows...

C&C works on console but only just. Its soo much better on a PC. And C&C didnt sell particualy well compared to the rest of the games released at the same time on consoles. Many console gamers scoff at the idea of an RTS on console.

Yea, build it for consoles then throw it on pc and hope for the best. The PC was left out completely for Battlefield Bad Company. Least Dice did well with Mirrors Edge, best played on PC.

The fact that you get alot more out of a gaming PC than a console is enough of a reason for me to say its in a great state.

PC gaming is doing just fine. It's actually more popular wordwide now then it has ever been. Graphics card sales alone account for more then all console sales combined. And having a state of the art gaming rig is actually cheaper now then it was back in the 90's.Buying 16-32 mb's of system ram and a 8 mb videocard would have set you back a $1000 back in the day.

Nowadays you can get 4 Gb's of ram for less then $100 and a very powerful graphics card for under $250... PC gaming isnt that expensive unless you have to build a ridiculously expensive machine just for bragging rights.

Consoles are the ones with an unforseen future. They dont know what they're suppsed to be. Are they watered down gaming PCs? (360) An all in one entertainment hubs? (PS3) Simplified gaming machines? (Wii) Until they fix their identitiy crisis and become what they were back in the past (a cheap gaming machine and nothing more) I would worry more about consoles then PC's.

Don't forget that the majority of the pc gamign population is often times located in Europe, and not the United States actually.

Yeah but the united states does not = the world. Hence why I said worldwide PC gaming is very popular, but it's not doing bad in the states either.

overall ticking along nicely. only two things are of concern imho. 1) no voice. unlike a console, the Pc doesent have one megacorp spending the GDP of a small country promoting its console and its brand. the PC continues to lead the charge in new ideas, new business models, new technology and online gaming communities (it is the most powerful communications device one can buy after all). the problem is that no one is telling anyone that these things are already happening. im sure MS will make a big deal out of facebook and twitter appearing on the xbox. itll be heralded as a revolution and an example of forward thinking. but the PC already does those things and it was PCs and people with good ideas who made those kinds of sites possible (personally not my cuppa mind). game level editors are supposedly revolutionary....well they were in 1992. but the PC doesent have a PR team the size of switzerland to get people hyped up on all these kewl things. even things like blu-ray playback, multimedia playback.....these things that supposedly make consoles better...the PC lead the charge on that one also and digital downloads? PC is the master at it. 2) due to the advent of multiplat game development, the PC is kinda being dragged into the console realm (and consoles into the PC realm). although the PC will continue to get many niche and more specialised titles, these wont be at the high end. in terms of big budget blockbusters.....the PC wont be getting them exclusively. itll still get them but they will be multiplat. this is putting a big strain on hardware manufacturers especially. with no games really pushing the envleope on PC (a lack of what i call "F*** it" games), its becoming harder and harder to justify spending money on upgrades. personally speaking i have no intention to upgrade my PC this year and its 3 years old now. i can run crysis on very high relatively smoothly and the only game to cause my PC trouble is GTA4...i cant max it out (though i can still run it pretty well). the lies of nvidia, intel and AMD are going to need to provide reasons for their customers to upgrade.

YOu're quite wrong, even in 90s consoles were more popular gaming platform than PC gaming and the price of state of the art PC is getting lower and lower. It's not even 1/3 of what it was in 90s despite the inflation.

Anyway the state of PCgaming? There's a big change occuring right now. The biggest mainstream devs are going multiplatform(with few exceptions of course), the upgrade cycle slowed down (a computer from 2007 is still more than enough today) at the same time the shift of biggest devs to consoles as well as the explosion of digital distribution has caused the ressurgence of small niche devs. Genres that were though to be lost and abaddoned are now coming back to life (like simulators, 4X, adventure), small independent developers are doing great (while on consoles they're dying out, it seems in console market you either get bought out or go bancrupt) and overall revenues from PCgaming are growing on steady basis.

Bassicaly the state of PCgaming is that it's growing and at the same time changing into more independent driven market, with games portofilo resembling what PCgaming was in late 80s and early 90s
