Pre-order content has been around for generations and before last gen games were even more expensive than they are now. Especially back in the SNES/Genesis days.
Honestly, online passes aren't a big deal, if you weren't buying the game new then how much did you really care about that game's multiplayer?
On disc dlc is rare and it's even rarer that it's actually something you'd want to buy.
The worst thing is the prices for this dlc. Ten dollars for three multiplayer maps? Fifteen for five? Ten dollars for two hours or less of singleplayer content? Five dollars for a light saber for my avatar? What the hell?

Bad DLC (not the good stuff like GTA 4 expansions, Fallout 3, those kind of stuff)
Thanks Xbox, indeed. See, DLC has actually existed for a while for the PC community, in the form of expansion packs. It only turned into the crazy, almost comical milking we see today after being introduced on consoles. Say what you will about PC gamers, but they are a vocal and observant bunch that does a good job of keeping greedy devs and publishers in line.DLC, thanks xbox.

At this point, all parties are guilty.DLC, thanks xbox.

Which is why companies continue to use ridiculously intrusive and inconvenient DRM, right? Which is why many PC gamers tie their game purchases into accounts from companies that will take away access to things you paid for due to forum comments, right? I'm a PC gamer myself, but you're kidding yourself if you think PC gaming as a whole is any more free of publisher nonsense than console gaming,
I voted for **OTHER**.
I hate the new subscription services that CoD have because of it's idiotic success, now EA is looking to do that with the BF series, and if EA does it, and it takes off, I can see tons of dev following suit, ala "Online Passes".

LOL
DLC is optional, though, but the online pass is straight up sh!t. I don't even think you can use your GT even when playing with the person who has the pass (NHL12).

Hm... both online pass and DLC are pretty bad... but if I had to choose I would definitely say DLC. It should be used to expand upon a game in meaningful ways, not to complete and unfinished game.

lmao what? were you in a cave before then?
This place was at its prime at the start of last gen.
DLC and sequel after sequel, remake after remake. A lot more last gen games had their own ideas, their own styles, new gameplay methods or invented their own little world or back story. Now we're lucky if developers pull of a worthy sequel, let alone think "Right lets move onto something new".
Look at Far Cry, it's back to the same concept as it was nearly a decade ago, hasn't moved on at all and has generalized the plot to revolve around insanity. Look at all the remakes of past games, damn you game industry, move on.

The internet has been mainstream for over a decade. Consoles were playing catch up this generation, but that isn't indicative of society as a whole.

I didn't have an account back then, but I distinctly remember the fanboy sh*tstorm that took place when Gamespot gave Shenmue a 6.5. The fanboys whined so much that Gamespot actually went back and CHANGED the score to a 7.5 without changing the text of the review (which, I think, is just as big a dent to the site's credibility as the Gerstmann fiasco). I also remember when Super Mario Sunshine got an 8-point-something. The fanboys have been doing exactly what they're doing right now for as long as I can remember, going all the way back to Genesis kids vs SNES kids on the playground.
DLC's the industry can suck it only difference now is I just wait for the GOTY ed or something similar if the DLC are anything I am even interested in. Either way they are losing money on me because I've pretty much stopped buying games near their release date. Unfortunately they are making money hand over fist on DLC's. I just feel bad for someone who is so dumb they'd pay 15 bucks for a COD map pack filled with a bunch of levels made on the same game engine a year earlier.
Casuals have been in this industry for longer than just this gen.Casuals and casulization of the gaming industry
