What is up with Sony/MS and all their SKUs?

I just read This and it got me thinking, why are there so many SKUs? Seriously! Its annoying when your trying to figure out what console you want to buy they keep making new models! Like lets looks at this:

-60GB
-80GB
-40GB
-120GB (?)

Sony isn't alone, lets look at all the MS SKUs
- Arcade/whatever the hell it was called before
- Pro/whatever it was called
- Elite

Seriously, I hope they just have 1 SKU next gen... I was SO CLOSE to getting a 20GB Xbox360 until I found out about the 60GB model and I waited, but now I don't even know which console I want because they keep making new SKUs!!!!

Yeah I think it got out of control. But I bet it made some people buy more than one console.

well I bought 2 360's but only becuz my launch Premium died then I sold it after it was repaired and bought the Elite :)

So are you arguing against manufactueres updating their hardware and giving you a better value? Because I'm sure Nintendo could be putting two gigs of flash memory in the Wii for the same cost now that payed for that paltry 512MB they gave you two years ago (and expect you to pay for now).GIJames248

I don't have to buy these skus. Do I really are about features that are pointless? I won't have to buy a new xbox to play gears 2, banjo, halo3: kic, or anything.

120 GB PS3 Sku with no BC was a terrible idea.

You can buy a fully compatible 250 GB HDD for like 120 USD.

You can't buy BC.

There are 2 major reasons Microsoft went with 2 SKUs:

- To keep the costs down. The Xbox Hard Drive cost $70 per Xbox, and so releasing an Xbox 360 without a hard drive would save money.

- To say "We have a cheap, affordable system." Most systems, including the original Xbox, launched at $299. So when MS launched the Xbox 360, they wanted to have that $299 system, even if it was garbage. Now because of this they can advertise a $199 system (the sweet spot for price points).

There is 1 major reason Sony went with multiple SKUs:
