What is your favourite FPS campaign?

I've been playing Wolfenstein: The New Order these days, which has an excellent campaign (the fact that it's pretty lengthy also helps). And that got me to thinking about campaigns in shooters in general.

Sadly, good campaigns in first person shooters are not easy to come by these days. There's some recent exceptions, like Titanfall 2, but sadly that is exactly what they are- exceptions. But there have been quiet a few good FPS campaigns over the years nonetheless. What are your personal favourites?

Mine would probably be Halo: Reach.

Modern - Doom 4.

Classic - Doom (+ mods it's my all time favorite shooter)

Without being a straight up pew pew game - Metroid Prime.

Barring a few examples it tends to be a tallest midget contest to me. This is one of those genres where the multiplayer side is without a doubt the best side.

Nintendo fanboys tell me time and time again that Metroid Prime isn't an FPS when I point out that it has terrible shooting mechanics and controls so idk why people keep listing MP in here.

If shit tier games like MP count then IDK how one of the best games ever made and its lesser sequel that gets too much hate don't.

Tossup between Halflife 1/2.

Halflife generally wins on first impressions, if you were playing it 1998, it was a very hard and welcomed kick in the stones.

Not talking about quality here, I'm talking about genres. Wouldn't Deus Ex count as an RPG?

Also, I don't think Metroid Prime counts as a first person shooter either.

Yeah, I think more people tend to have a problem with CoD4's influence going forward, not so much with the game itself.

What would you call it then, action adventure? That would fit, but then again many other FPS games fit within action adventure as well.

I have no problem with either genre designation really, I think it's absolutely fair to call it a FPS. I know Mems be trollin, but I think part of the reason why many do shy away from calling it a FPS is because the shooting isn't anything special at all.

Yep, I would call it an action adventure.

I mean, I can see why a lot of people call it a shooter. I just keep going back and forth, but I lean more toward action adventure than shooter, because there's much less emphasis on actual shooting (and since the shooting itself is shoddy at times).

But yeah, as you said, it can go either way.

One thing I'm quite sure of, though, is that Deus Ex is no FPS :P

the original Halo for sure, love the feeling of power being just one guy taking down an entire alien army myself, i liked most of the areas in the game, how you could use so many type of vehicles. Also the way the storyline was told helped suck me into it. Not a big fan of the end of the game though, the escape from the pillar was a lag fest, i had no fps counter but im sure it was dropping below 5fps at many times during the escape. Halo 2 was big letdown during its campaign, game ended too quickly.

I hope someday they release a remastered version of Halo on the PC.

Eh scrub, Metroid Prime's hard-pressed to be classified as an FPS.

Ok, so, pre-2007, I will say Half Life 2 (including all Episodes). It's a pretty easy choice tbh, considering now game did fps campaigns like Half Life and its sequel and still don't to this day. Plus, by the time Ep 2 rolled around, Valve had perfected their combat and their story telling and you really come to care for the series regulars.

Post 2007 - Bioshock 2. This game gets overlooked due to the original and a sequel that really changed things but the middle game is the best story for me. It's darker, ore manipulative and actually truly effective and raising some serious moral quetsions. It's just a same that by the se cond half of the game, things get a bit too repetitive and the gameplay suffers but the story never lets up.

I'm not doing this stupid ass discussion every time we have one of these threads. I don't see the benefit of going overkill and acting like Metroid Prime isn't a FPS, when the FPS already was a glorified sub-genre of action games that just happen to balloon into something huge.

I'd say the same with someone pimping out Deus Ex or System Shock in this thread, the beauty of those games, Metroid being an action adventure, and those being rpgs, is that they fundamentally show that a "FPS" doesn't have to be this rigid, boring thing. There are countless things you could do with that type of framework. I didn't exactly action/adventure ridley to death, or metroid prime, or the omega pirate, or the metroids, or the space pirates, or Thardus, or Flaahgra, or the Parasite queen.

You want to make the argument that Metroid Prime isn't a great game, because it's core combat is shallow n clunky in a game where you absolutely need to deal with said combat so it doesn't get to skate by devoid of any criticism for it? Eh, I'm not gonna disagree with anyone on that account. But the part where I have to pretend it's not a FPS, when it's a fucking FPS is one that is promptly going to be met with old man champ going: go **** yourself.

Metroid Prime if that counts. I've played some great campaigns, but I can't think of any others off the top of my head I would consider a favourite.

Without including futuristic FPS like Halo, Killzone, etc. Medal of Honor Underground (ps1) was my favorite. I've bought at least 5 call of duty games and didn't play campaign once.
