Are there any JRPG series, new or old would you consider generally superior to Final Fantasy? Not the biggest JRPG fan, but from what I've played these are all better imo.

Probably just Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. The next closest JRPG series to Final Fantasy would be Dragon Quest.
I think FF is ok, but even the ones that I like I think are vastly overrated, and so I would take any of the above games over them.
I tried playing fantasy star and shining force recently but lasted about 40 seconds before I got bored. The same would probably happen if I played final fantasy these days.
I'd say Persona and Xenoblade are the best I've played. Enjoyed FF9 at the time though, 7 is good but I prefer 9.
All JRPGs tend to suck. Chrono Trigger is a legitimate masterpiece though.
Pokemon games are also good.
Is Dark Souls considered a JRPG? Bloodborne slaughters anything I've ever played in FF, apart from that I think the best FF titles are up with the best of the genre (if you consider JRPG a genre).
Most of the games suggested so far are strategy games with RPG elements, madly dissimilar to FF and in a sense, JRPG's too.
My list of jrpgs better than most Final Fantasies:
Legend of Heroes - Trails in the Sky series
Suikoden 5
Nier Automata
Lost Oddysey
Xenogears
Xenosaga Ep III
Last Story
Dragons Dogma - combat is better
Final Fantasy 7 > all else
Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast > every FF game that has been released, and any FF release in future.
Chrono Trigger is my favorite JRPG of all time, and perhaps favorite game of all time in general, so yeah...
Past that, it'd depend on what FF games we are talking about. I absolutely love FFVI and FFVII, and both of those would probably be my favorite JRPGs after Chrono Trigger. I really like FFIX, V, and IV too, but I could see myself putting the likes of Golden Sun 2 or Super Mario RPG over those. There's probably a load of JRPGs I'd put over the likes of FFVIII, XII, XIII, XV.
Valkyrie Profile and Pokemon are my two favorites that are better than the FF games in general. Dark Souls I still consider a Japanese RPG.
The quality of FF games are so all over the place, but I always appreciate the games trying new systems and building new worlds and successfully using the brand to reach into MMO territory. The FF games I like the most are some of the spinoffs. Really like Tactics and Revenant Wings.
Well.... any game after 10 is better...
That said, I love the Breath of Fire franchise (1-3 at least.. my favorite of all times).
None from an overall standpoint. Definitely my favorite RPG's because I grew up playing them. These days I'd take Persona, Ys, and Dragon Quest over them, though
Are we talking about FF in the past, or FF as it is now?
He's talking about now, he's never played 1-6 because they were in a "Kids console and were trash" compared to all the PS1 games. Fun fact, he never played 6 or below.

*Ahem* I never even commented on this thread. Hallucinating Fire?
There are many series that I like more than Final Fantasy here are a few.
-Xenogears/Saga/Chronicles/X
-Phantasy Star
-Dragon Quest
-Wild Arms
I legit feel that Final Fantasy has fallen off hard in recent entries (13 and 15 are horrible beyond words). It feels like the Sonic of RPGs at this point for me.
Im surprised noone said shadow hearts. I love me some FF (yes even now) though I will say shadow hearts is hands down my favorite jrpg. Also its pretty dang hard compared to most jrpgs. I wish they would release all 3 games on ps4 at least through psn. So many more can play this hidden gem.
SMT and Persona. don't like Final Fantasy past IX with the exception of XIV. i think FF would be well-served with a mainline single-player game that is set in a more traditional fantasy setting, like 1-5.

@indzman: bang Fire I can feel the tension between you guys
Negetive.
Welp back to writing my fan fiction
As a whole no franchise is even close to Final Fantasy, but the latest entries have been underwhelming; by no means they're bad games just not as good as they used to be; I'd definitely say Persona even its spin-offs have been good which is really funny since Persona is a Spin-off by itself; That speaks volumes for Atlus.

Playing Phantasy Star now, it's very impressive considering it's time, seems well ahead of other 8-bit games at that era, and more impressive than anything on the NES, Zelda included.

I see.
TBH Indz lost me when posting FF13 and FF15 screenshots with pride.
Snow is such a terrible character, they all are, that entire arc was just one massive failure.
