If you're asking who won last gen, it was Sony with the PS2, no doubt about it. The PS2 has sold at least 115 million units. The Xbox comes in at a real distant second (24 million) gamecube a very close, yes I said close third (21.5 million). Also, the Gamecube had 21 titles that sold more than a million copies, the Xbox had 6. The PS2 had 65 titles that sold over a million copies. The PSone (102 million) had a slightly smaller lead against the N64 (32 million).
So basically, for the past 12 years, either you're Sony, or you squeak by.
If you want to talk about which system is better, well, that's a different story. In terms of raw power, Xbox unquestionably was the best last gen. The Gamecube, while on paper was less powerful than the PS2, is pretty widely recognized as being second in the horsepower race.
But the only thing that has ever mattered is the game library. That's really just a matter of personal preference. I think they're all equally good, with the PS3 having the biggest, most well-rounded library. The Gamecube had the best first-party stuff, I think. And if a game was multi-plat, getting the Xbox version was a no-brainer. I think the whole thing's as simple as that, isn't it?
