and verrrrrrrrrrrrry fun. nintendo first party game are extremely fun to play. they dont need to impress u with graphics and hd or anything like that. the gameplay alone is very fun. i can promise u if uncharted or gears has bad non hd graphics it will get crappy review scores and no one would talk about them. the ps3 and 360 exclusives depends alot on graphics to appeal audience but the mario games focuses on great gameplay. for me i love good graphics but i really prefer great gameplay for example bayonetta it not very graphically appealing for the hd system but its a extremely fun and has top notch gameplay.
also mario game are great fun in short and long sittings, they are very accessable and u can injoy them for 5 minutes or 5 hours but in hd console games u cant just put a game in a play for 5 minutes heck u will be still in the loading screen in 5 minutes.
they are fun and easy to get into for casuals, yet offer depth and challenge to the hardcore. Also the characters are beloved by everyone at this point. Most importantly the are FUN! and thats what video games are supposed to be.

are you kidding me? how is playing super mario mean you live in the internet? My brother is 28 and the only video games he plays are mario games. According to you what games should people over 22 be playing?
Is hard to explain in a few words but let's just say that Mario has a long story. It comes from way back in the 80's after the video game crash when there were hardly any good games around and even though the quality of the games has remained consistent a huge part of its appeal comes from pure nostalgia.

Your 28 years old brother doesn't represent the majority of the population. The entire foundation which the Mario series is built on (dialogue script with 4th grade vocabulary, colorful design, assistance in gameplay, level design that rivals those of Sesame street) is for casual, pre-teen gamers. Its okay if you like Super Mario but just saying its embarrassing to play in public if you're over 22.A 22 years old could play any game she wants to but certain games aren't intended for her age range such as Super Mario.
nah, it's nost nostalgia only, the games have this formula.. Rayman Origins also have some of that formula, but still not quite there. Is hard to explain in a few words but let's just say that Mario has a long story. I just played Super Mario with my roommate 2 months ago. A chick I know from work plays it all the time. I'm living in the real world outside of teh ignorance.
The sound? The Mario series has some of the best music in video games, and i can't think of any really grating sound effects.I find most Mario games unappealing mostly due to the sounds. I get a headache very quickly and makes the games unplayable. I could mute the sound , but then that's no fun way to play video games.

People shouldn't...

Yeah...i'm not wasting my time with you.
One reason nostalgia. People who gamed in the 80/90's will continue to buy nintendo franchises such as mario and zelda regardless of quality and innovation because of the nostalgia of playing them as children. Nintendo are the least innovative software developers in the game industry and somehow managed to con the entire world with the wii, into believing they are somehow inovative and creative. Mootion control is not innovation its a gimmick nor is a tablet controller innovation it is desperation. There are roughly 2o million hardcore nintendo fans if gamecube sales are anythiing to go by who will buy any of the 30 mario cannon/spinoff games during a consoles life cycle becasue thats all nintendo can guarantee, they survive on first party titles since they have extremely poor third party support. That is why mario sells well.

I'll admit nostalgia and familiarity have a lot to do with it. It's one of the franchises that appeal to both my kids and myself. Add also the legendary polish of Nintendo first-party games. Who cares if it's cartoonish. I still play the adventure games Day of the Tentacle and Curse of Monkey Island and they're both cartoonish.
I can't keep playing "serious" games all the time or else I'm going to get burned out. In fact, I'm burned out on modern warfare games. I haven't bought any new ones since ARMA 2/OA.

Bottom line is you don't know any women, right?
The basic mechanics are incredibly easy to pick up and the games encourage replay in the form of bonus stages and finding the quickest ways through levels. Pretty much something for everyone.
