The occulus rift looks the best, but the WiiU pad looks to have the most potential to be able to introduce so many things to console gaming.
Hard to know when we haven't even seen Kinect 2.0 and a very limited view of the PS4.
I think the Wii U tablet is awesome though.
unless the hydra doesn't rely on any kind of pointer technology (which that green ball seems to imply it does), you won't be able to move your whole body away from the "main screen". and of course, there's the fact that the oculus rift has wires coming out of it. or at the very least A wire.Man I never thought about pairing Oculus rift with my Razer Hydra that would be pretty awesome!

Smartphones and Consoles connectivity. Could be fun for stats, achievements, maps, and so on.Giancar
How many companion type apps do you have and use on your smartphone right now? (Or anyone else for that matter.)
[QUOTE="jg4xchamp"]The share and stream stuff with PS4. I assume it's gonna suck like for the first few years, but I think eventually it's gonna be really cool. BrunoBRSTC didn't list it, so i forgot about it. i really like the idea of instant replay and auto recording.
Not really a gimmick than, is it?

Yeah I was a little loose with the gimmick term.TC didn't list it, so i forgot about it. i really like the idea of instant replay and auto recording.[QUOTE="BrunoBRS"][QUOTE="jg4xchamp"]The share and stream stuff with PS4. ...oh yeah, i forgot this is SW, where words and terms take completely different meanings, and that if you like it, it's not a gimmick.[QUOTE="wakefulness"]

Oh sweet Jebus, I need to see this!
Yeah, I was thinking that it a user did want to buy something bc it's on a device than it's technically not a gimmick (to them at least). Agreed,

I wont win this fight. I tap out! XD
I would usually say that VR is terrible, but Occulus Rift from what I have read, is a game changer, it is the real deal. It combines head tracking, and a 1080p display which actually covers your whole face, so all you see is the game. Moving your head to left in real life moves your head to the left in the game, same goes for up and down. Just imagine Mirror's Edge, or BF3 and Crysis 3's near photorealistic visuals with the headset, if done right, and supposedly, it is pretty amazing, it will be the future of gaming.

lol. but seriously, "gimmick" has such a negative connotation over here. the gimmick is just the "twist" that sets something apart from others, and for some reason that's seen as a horrible sin on SW, while remaining oblivious to the fact that without them, all games (and i'm talking software here) would be the exact same. battlefield's gimmicks are vehicles and destruction, thief's gimmick is the lighting system, and so on.[QUOTE="wakefulness"][QUOTE="BrunoBRS"] ...oh yeah, i forgot this is SW, where words and terms take completely different meanings, and that if you like it, it's not a gimmick.BrunoBRS

Interesting. Now answer this - what's the antithesis of a gimmick?
Rift won't be any good.moving your head around constantly will be crappy, not to mention you would look like a major hermit wearing such a thing.killzowned24
I agree with this, you'd look like a massive nerd wearing the thing, but it still looks like an awesome experience regardless. As long as you never show it to another living soul, you should be fine :p
Oculus Rift by far. It has the potential to revolutionize gaming. The others are just cheap gimmicks that probably wont be supported by most serious developers.PernicioEnigma
Hopefully you hermits will posts pic of yourselves wearing virtual reality headsets. Should rival Kinect laughs.
I think Kinect 2. Not really for the motion controls but for the touted much improved voice recognition. With consoles becoming much more than just a games machine, navigating and controlling the system by voice could be a big thing.
Occulus Rift looks great and I think their will be a new VR boom in the coming years. I think there will be a few revisions and upgrades to the hardware/software first before someone really nails it.

Well they do say ignorance is bliss. It already has Unreal Engine 3 Integration. Unreal Engine 4 Integration will soon be there too.Rift is gonna see all platforms if it's any good - they are working on UE integration.

the antithesis of "something that sets a thing apart from the rest" would be "something that doesn't change at all". it would be stagnant, and last i checked, everyone agreed that stagnant things were bad.[QUOTE="KiZZo1"]Rift is gonna see all platforms if it's any good - they are working on UE integration.

Websters dictionary is getting a run for its money.
What about VITA's backtouch? Would you consider that a gimmick?

sure. pretty much anything that sets something apart from the rest can be considered such. hell, there was a time when analog sticks, or even 3D graphics (!) were considered gimmicks, before they became the standard.
also, the definition: "An innovative or unusual mechanical contrivance; a gadget." or "An innovative stratagem or scheme employed especially to promote a project".
or from wikipedia, "In marketing language, a gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries."

It is interesting than, because that would mean smartphones are the antithesis of gimmicks. Bc, we (practically) see the same smartphone hardware come out and the only hardware "gimmick" is better battery/brighter screen/thinner chassis/faster mobile processors . . . and those are hardly unusual contrivances. Those things fall in line with the theory of technology increasing in high factors (as time goes on) as wel as phones being a pockatable means of social communication. I don't think a product that demonstrates the advancement of technology and that provides valuable social interaction is a "gimmick" (at least, not in the examples you have given).
Hmmm.

Hmmm.
but before smartphones, there had to be touch screen cellphones, and before that, regular cellphones, and before that, normal phones. "it's a phone, that you can take with you!" "it's a phone that has no buttons!" "it's a phone that can connect to the internet!" and so on. look, for example, at that galaxy smartphone that's almost as big as a tablet. its tagline is, putting it simply, "screw small screens, you want something huge. we got you covered". it goes against the convention of increasing portability for the sake of standing out, and some might argue it's an improvement (after all, bigger screens are always a plus, it just depends on how much portability you're willing to sacrifice for it). Please Log In to post.
