whenever there was a horror game recommendation thread, this game would always be the first mentioned. everyone was shooting loads over this game; many proclaiming it the greatest horror game ever made. what a load of crap. first of all it uses one of my most hated game concepts, and that is the silent protagonist waking up with amnesia. i know the game is called amnesia, but how many times has this concept been regurgitated over and OVER? secondly, how am i supposed to be afraid of monsters that have vaginas for heads? i don't want to run for them i want to **** them. thirdly, one of the things that bugged me was that little hand icon, it breaks immersion. if the devs weren't lazy they would have animated your hand opening doors and picking up items. and lastly, while the sound design was pretty good there wasn't one particularly memorable song, and some of the sweeping orchestral tunes were too grandiose for its own good.

overall it doesn't stack up to the GOAT silent hill 2

I disagree,no other game of the so called "survival horror" genre has really scrared me a bit, only Amnesia could sometimes make me very uncomfortable. I personaly haven´t found SH2 scary at all, especially when most enemies are so dumb that you can run past them with ease.

The setting and the story were very interesting though.

Sounds to me you want a survival horror game where you fight monsters. Silent Hill 2 has a great story, but that game is not scary one bit, just saying.

As far as "Survival Horror" or Horror games in general run, you wont be "Scared" unless you let the game scare you. Putting up the mental wall of "I'm unscarable" or trying to be ever perceptive that you are playing a video game is where people get to the. "No scary game has ever scared me!" in the same vien as movie buffs who claim "Scary movies never scared me!" You gotta let yourself go, get into the experience instead of trying to force the experience upon yourself. Being able to fight or run is a key concept in almost all horror genres, with the lack of either being a good focal point to creat a tense atmosphere. It's not right or wrong to restrict the player from certain actions. In many action oriented games the option to "Run away" that may have been usefull is usually taken away at some points bringing you face to face with the threat of having to actually defeat your foe.

Well TC, if you bought a game and doesn't like the story because it's based on the title then your loss. BUT it is better than randomly walking into a deserted castle for nothing, it just makes it way more mysterious. If there was other characters to be based on the story than that would be stupid.

I definitely see where the TC is coming from. I don't ever try to not be scared/immersed when I play a horror game, but the little I did play from Amnesia wasn't too immersive or scary (I say little, because I played it at a friends house. I don't actually own the game).

I got more jumps and scares from Stalker than I did from what I played in Amnesia.

It's very unnerving. Everything from the atmosphere to the visual effects has you waiting for something horrible to happen, even if that horrible then rarely does happen.

I haven't gotten too far into it, simply 'cause I'm not a fan of the genre, but I think video games are the perfect medium for horror if done right.
