Hey everybody, do this....watch the video in 360p, see how good it still looks?
BOOM, proves that pixels do not matter if you have good art.
@lostrib: he's trying to, rightly, point out that the difference between 900 and 1080 is negligible and developers should sacrifice resolution to have better lighting and assets.
This concept escapes most people though.
I should point out before anybody makes any false accusations here. I have a PS3 and ps4 and no Xbox. I have a WiiU as well but it's kinda dead to me at the moment.
Wow
The Last of Us 2 with these kind of graphics would be mind blowing.

Its 2015 and you want to see anything under the standard resolution for almost a decade now? What's up with that? Since we're at it, lets release every game in 720p and give it better shadows, lighting, textures then call it 'next gen'. In couple of years you won't be able to buy a 720p HDTV but f*ck it, its next gen, who needs anything over 720p.
That is a very nice apartment.
Hardwood floors, dark wood furniture matching the dark wood kitchen and bathroom, mosaic designs in the walls, cherry wood front door. Beautiful!

Well yeah. If the hardware can't handle it then why not lower the resolution? Shouldn't you be furious at the console makers for not making a system up to your standards?
Until we get to the point where real time ray tracing and radiosity is possible real time graphics like that will remain a dream im afraid.
The problem with ray tracing is that it takes lots of raw power to do and to get a truly photo realistic image you need lots of 'bounces' from the rays and the more you have the more power it takes to do so your kinda going around in circles.
Im positive it will happen but dont underestimate how much more powerful a pc/console will have to be to do so, we're looking at several orders of magnitude if you want full photo realistic images in real time.
Wow
Yeah.
Looks so good the movement is actually sort of disorienting because it is so traditional. lol.
Unreal Engine 4 is a joke. Once again the Whites/grays/blacks/browns look fantastic.
But as soon as they show any actual colours, it all falls to pieces and looks horrible/fake. The green plant looked horrible. The chair was a joke. And the red thing on the stove looked awful.
Let me know when the Unreal Engine is capable of doing actual colours and I will be impressed. As of right now, I LOL at that video.

where did he mention anything about 900p and 1080p? what would playing a video at 360p prove about that debate anyways
@silversix_: Yes, I would like games at slightly lower resolutions if it meant the game looked better.
Resolution is not the end all be all of graphics. It's one small part of a lot of things that make up overall fidelity. For instance, Battlefield at 900 looks better than Call of Duty AW at 1080.
BU BUH, the reSolUTIONzzzzzSss!!?!??!!
That said. The exact same game running with the exact same lighting and visual effects will look better at higher resolution. I'm just saying that games would look better if they sacfriced resolution to achieve better lighting and visual effects.
Creative simple geometry is 100X easier than complex biological life forms. It's much easier to make a cube room or a car than it is a living breathing being.
Video games are closer to cartoons than real life. If I want real life: a window exists without the fear of bigger boys who drink alcohol saying mean things.
I know I'm gonna get flamed for this but... AC Unity already looks close to this sans the real time reflections (or are those just baked reflections considering the environment is static) and with lower quality models.
You will be alive to see this, unless you die unexpectedly and/or are older than 60. All we need is a new generation of consoles, basically.
It's also worth noting that the progression we'll see to get to this point will be so smooth that you won't even be impressed by the time it becomes available.
Like, Crysis used to be amazing, now it's a relic of the past.

from 1080p to 720p that's nowhere near "slightly" lower res. Having sharper textures but having everything blurred out and aliasing all over the place kill any good looking title. Just look at BF4 on x1, it looks atrocious even tho its a good looking game.
In some areas, this comes close IMO. I think we're going to see those visuals this gen.
Judging by the questionable console graphical leap we just had from last gen to this gen in 8 years, I wonder how many gens it would take consoles to get there?
On GAF there is a high res thread and I've seen some shots that are pretty close to this. However, those are high res shots lol.

Apparently, the fact you don't know the difference between facts and your opinion, excapes you.
In my opinion resolution is the most important aspect of graphics. I jumped to current generation early, because i couldn't stand 720p and jaggies anymore.
Anyway, 99% of PS4 games run at native 1080p, and many look really good! Not sure why would someone want to downgrade something that is already standard.

i think what silversix is trying to say is that you shouldnt have to sacrifice 1080p rez since pc games have been doing it for a long time.
this might be a shot at low end console specs

Framerate is becoming the most important aspect for me lately.
Suffice to say, resolution is a big deal. PS4 is a doing a much better job at holding the 1080p/30fps line. Sure 900p vs 1080p isn't the biggest deal, but XO is having problems with lod and framerate in tandem with lower res.
@PAL360:
Same here, but to be honest on consoles you don't often get a choice between the two.
Hoping to upgrade in the next few weeks to accommodate a boost in both res and framerate. Might wait for AMD's new cards, the 970 RAM gimping news is disconcerting.

On topic: Hopefully VXGI will become commonplace soon. It would be great to have some kind of mod/hack that takes older games and runs it through newer lighting systems similar to icenhancer.
Lighting in modern games is still lacking, for obvious reasons. Still stuck in a transitional gen in that sense.
I know I'm gonna get flamed for this but... AC Unity already looks close to this sans the real time reflections (or are those just baked reflections considering the environment is static) and with lower quality models.
I'd recommend replaying AC Unity but I wouldn't want anyone to replay that pile of shit. The game looks fantastic in certain areas but nothing in the game, not even the indoor areas, come close to this UE4 demo.

It has some pretty advanced techniques indoors that you can see in the video. The reflection mapping and hdr effects are very reminiscient of what AC Unity has already achieved.
I'm just saying, these graphics aren't too far fetched. Just need a very powerful PC.

they are baked, and we're already alive to see it because I can run it on my own pc :P

Wait, you can get this demo? Where?
Considering I also have a 970 I could give it a spin.

Also reduce the video speed to 15 fps, add a boat load of blurr, and take off some effects. Looks like PC will be superior in the future too.
