Weak, and generic gameplay.
It's a good game but not the second coming like everyone said it was.
At best Bioshock should have gotten a 8.0-8.5 here at GS.

Call of Duty 4(Beta) looks and plays better. 60FPS
The beta got old after the first 5 games. And it has no physics. The damage control on system wars is beyond nuts. The fact is it's a great game...and gamerankings has it in it's top 5...nuff said.
Graphics, atmopshere, story, sound effects. And honeslty, name a game in the history of consoles that has incorperated such features into an FPS. Zero, thats what... far from generic for consoles.
PC has seen games like System Shock, but ironically this game who was made by the same developer...follows in it's footsteps.
This thread is full of fail. I understand not everyone may like it, but the fact is about 90% of the people who have played or reviewed this game, is loving it.
The combat was deep, visceral, and flexible. It was not generic by any means.
And the story was ****ing amazing.
Bioshock is even better than SS2.
Weak, and generic gameplay.

They way you could go about killing everything in any fashion you saw fit. I loved finding new ways to kill big daddy's. That was the funnest part of the game for me.
Bioshock's gameplay was awesome. you could deal with any given situation in a thousand different ways. you could set enemies on fire, electrocute them, smash them in the face with a wrench, make them fight each other, set security bots on them, set up electric trip-wiresand lure them to their death, freeze them, shoot them, make them attack big daddies, make a big daddy your bodygaurd, you could turn invisible, you could play it like a stealth game, you could play it likea shooter, you could play as both stealth gameand shooter, you could pick up objects with telekinesis and throw them, you could throw explosive tanks at enemies, you could catch missiles or grenades and throw them back, need I say more?
great gameplay.
The reason it didn't get your scores are listed above me.Weak, and generic gameplay.

I agree. The game is actually THAT great looking either. If you see anything close up, its nasty. Not to mention everyone was wowed by water animations, one of the simplest things to do. Am I a dev? No. But I can tell you I have seen beautiful water effects in some crappy looking games. I think it must be the easiest thing to look real. Everyone does it.
Not to mention, this game isn't setting or will set any sales records.

Everything about bioshock is awesome.
I find it funny that u say COD4 is so much better, yet you say Bioshock has weak generic gameplay.

And if it were on the PS3, you would be worshipping it. Funny.
Water effects are the easiest thing to make? You honestly don't have any idea what you're talking about, do you?
...Wow, did you say it wasn't selling well? Are you serious?
The ability to kill has never been as varied or satisfying as it is in Bioshock.
The gameplay is amazing, and isn't weak or generic.

I played the beta at a friends house, it is fun and great but it kinda is just a pimped out COD2.

Some people are just incapable of appreciating art and subtlety. C'est la vie...
Battles against Big Daddies were all fun. But I'll admit splicers did get repetetive, difficulty was lacking and security was annoying. Still a AAA though.meetroid8
well at least they looked different depending on the are you're in.

Look at Lair. Its a piece of artwork. But got a horrible score due to the gameplay. Bioshock fell short in many areas as well. No, not the same as Lair, but short nonetheless.

Yeah, I said it wasn't selling well. Lemmings tout the game as GOTY, and how many records has it broke? Why are we reading about Halo and others going gold but not Bioshock. Maybe I missed it, seriously. I ahven't seen that.
And to the water; Go play Blazing Angels. Horrible, last gen graphics, with beautiful water.

So sales are all that makes a great game. Guess we should just wait until the end of the year and look at the number of units sold and give the top seller GOTY then right.
If you read the review for Bioshock here on Gamespot, you would realize some things about Bioshock. If you truly wanted to, you could call the game generic... for having guns I suppose. The atmosphere and the environment are quite astounding IMO, just because of the fact that you don't see many underwater-esque games, unless your thing is for the Jaws game or something. The story is quite superb as well, with the splicers and Big Daddies roaming the halls. The actual storyline you follow is good, I haven't completed the game yet, but I have gotten far enough to appreciate it. Searching for items can be quite beneficial, though almost required in a sense, because the game is kind of linear. At one point, I thought I was searching around an area I didn't need to go, then upon hitting the goal, I realized that I actually did need to go to the area I had just ventured to complete the goal, so that was a bonus for me; but a minus for exploration.
Finding faults is kind of hard for this game, merely because it integrates many features qutie seamlessly into the game. The plasmids, the moral choices, the upgradable guns, etc. Sure, the splicers do get repetitive, and that is a fault that I did find. Also, the enemies get stronger without a visual reasoning, except for the Big Daddies if you wanted to say so. But besides some minor flaws, the game couldn't stand alone if it used only the gunplay or the plasmids; it is the way that the game is able to appreciate them all into a great gaming experience that has Bioshock stand out.
Let's see, I loved the gameplay, graphics, sound, Atmosphere, and story of the game. The gameplay isn't very generic, so either you haven't played the game, or you HAVEN'T played the game.

I love how you mention generic gameplay as one of the main reasons why Bioshock sucks and then name COD4 as a great game. I'm sorry COD is an awesome series but it doesn't get more generic than that.I found the enemies (even Big Daddies) to be rather easy on hard mode and the environments to be rather linear. I was hoping it would be tougher but that's all I can really complain about that'd be worth something. Maybe the blood effects and somewhat lousy physics, but that's about it.
I absolutely loved Bioshock's unique storytelling method. The graphics were awesome. The sound was great. The good ending was fantastic. There were plenty of ways to customise the character (though I personally got by the levels after Arcadia using only tonics associated with hand to hand (erm, wrench), healing, and hacking).
If there were to be a Bioshock 2 or a spiritual sequel of some sort, I'd add/change the following:
1. Tougher enemies. I don't want enemies to just have more health and deal more damage. I want them to deal more in many more ways. Give all enemies the same selection of plasmids and tonics that you have. It'll make for much more interesting combat, seeing as your enemies could place traps, co-ordinate with each other for the best tactics, make more use of the environment and the situation at hand.
2. Much more open environments. It'd be crazy to have linear environments with tougher enemies. They could throw a ring of oil around you, set it on fire, and leave the rest to a window sniper, ready to fire an incendiary bolt into your head. Open environments would allow you to analyse situations as best as you can and allow you to explore alternative routes.
3. Not-so-instantaneous healing. This really bugged me. I could take a beating from a Big Daddy, be on the verge of death, and get back in fighting instantly with the touch of a button. If it weren't so instantaneous, then you'd have to think more. Should I risk letting my guard down to patch myself up? Should I try and kill them quickly so I can patch myself up safely? Should I just run for it?
4. More weapon customization. It was a bit weak in my opinion. The game is certainly fine the way it is with weapon customization, but rather than having to go on a hunt for a Power to the People machine and only being able to make two choices per weapon, I'd like to use spare parts that I salvaged at a U-Invent station, with more than just two options and different upgrade levels, similar to the upgrade system in Resident Evil 4, but withoutsomeone saying "Is that all, stranger?".
If I feel like it, I'll add more to this list on my blog, assuming I ever change my blog to be able to be viewed by everyone. Or if I ever feel like starting one. >_>
