Poll What Was The Best Console Of Last Gen Overall? (10 years) (93 votes)

Microsoft Xbox 360 (Halo, Gears, Kameo, Viva, Kinect, N9, Alan Wake, Fable, Forza, Splinter Cell, Tales of Vesperia, etc.) 29%
Sony PlayStation 3 (Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, Ratchet, GT5-6, Infamous, PSmove, Wonderbook, Demon Souls, etc.) 57%
Nintendo Wii (Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Brawl, Galaxy, Skyward Sword, Red Steel, Just Dance, Xenoblade, etc.) 6%
Mattel Hyperscan (X-men, Wrestling League, Spider-Man, Marvel heroes, etc.) 0%
Tectoy Zeebo (Crash Nitro Kart 3D, Zeebo Soccer Camp, Prey, NFS Carbon, Tekken 2, etc.) 0%
Zapit Game Wave (Re-Wind, Lock 5, Click!, Gemz, etc.) 1%
All 6 of them 0%
I like all of the first 3 (Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3) 6%

With the new generation a year in, and last gen finally finishing up, let's look back at what was the best system over all last generation, I'll put come positives and Negatives of each system and you choose which of the 8 last generation consoles is the best.

XBOX 360:

the Xbox 360 released following the standard that the original Xbox introduced at the expense of writing it off. Powerful computer based architecture, Increasing the online and the User Interface for offline with New Xbox Experience (which would later be Windows 8 for further integration, opinion on that varies) tons of features in online gaming and in it's stores, Apps out the wazoo, stable multi-player gaming, and for better or worse, a giant leap into HD gaming beyond what was compatible with the original Xbox, whether that big jump is considered bad or good depends on the person, leading the industry into making bigger and better games, with integrated online experiences, Introducing new, and refined genres and mechanics, graphics that rival and beat PC in some areas (and that may never happen again) with 3 redesigns with faster PU's more stability, bigger storage space, and cool looks, the Xbox 360 was almost 100% ready out the gate,

Positives:

  1. Online gaming evolution from the standard integration set by the first Xbox console, along with a varied and large store front for games, music movies, apps and other goodies. Online multiplayer way ahead of everyone else.
  2. The start of the HD gaming revolution past the previous expectation of next generation consoles, allowing for more in depth and sophisticated gaming, influencing competitors as well.
  3. Multiple SKU's for the casual or hardcore gamer, from storage space, to update frequency, and prices to match.
  4. Integration between friends through various features like tagging, Party chat, etc. with Profile information and the free ability to add,
  5. Seamless integration between offline and online play, or even connecting socially within a game that is different from your friend whether it's on MP or SP.
  6. Double Down on harddrives as storage (although offered a card option for the crazy- I mean dedicated.)
  7. Tons of customization options on the Xbox interface itself or games (that are compatible)
  8. Kinect offered people not usual to the Xbox 360 ecosystem to Jump in.
  9. Achievements allowed developers to offer new challenges to players and give points per game for doing certain objective, adding longevity.

Negatives:

  1. RROD, latter fixed at the end of 2007, fully being thrown out by mid 2008 (old shipments still being sold not effected)
  2. Pay Wall for Apps for most of it's life, was debatable in earlier years, but when devices, not just for games, as well as game consoles, started catching up on the Apps and features they still kept the wall.
  3. Lack of a web Browser for most of it's life, limiting internet surfing to certain apps that had limits or modding (with high risk)
  4. For a good portion of life, instead of cash value, gift cards were exchanged for "points" that could cause issues with having left overs after buying from online stores.
  5. Lack of Wifi until the first revision built-in meant you had to either buy an add-on or use Ethernet etc.
  6. Xbox 360 E revision parts are order only and usually not in stores, except possibly Microsofts, no real advantage, losses a USB port and Enhanced Audio options.

PlayStation 3:

The PlayStation 3 entered the 7th generation at the most expensive in Sony History up to that point. It was also the second consoles to jump on the HD train, although a bit barren at first eventually the PS3 managed to gain a ton of features including integration with multiple devices. Innovative methods of control like PSmove, and Sixaxis were introduced, the device also sports a Blu-ray player for more dics space, and the Cell CPU which would give the PS3 that much more power than it's predecessor, the PS2. At the start along with Blu-Ray it also came with Wifi, and backward compatibility with the PS2.

Positives:

  1. Blu-Ray had more space for games making multi-disc games very rare.
  2. At the start, PS3's were BC with PS2 games.
  3. The PS3 online integration and U.I. drastically improved over the years and offers intuitive use, fast speeds, and simple comprehension.
  4. PSMOVE offered a more accurate style of play to Casuals over the competition. With tons of family friendly games, and compatibility with core games.
  5. Wonderbook offered even more options for the younger audience usually associated with consoles by Vtech with interactive story telling through books.
  6. Free online allowed the PS3 (for better or worse) have all players have access to apps and online Multiplayer.
  7. PSN+ gen 1, when it started offered free games for your subscription as a reward. Though you need to keep the subscription, a variety of games have circulated
  8. PS3 offered remote play with Sony's portable system, the PSvita, the first console to do so and further enriching Sony's ecosystem.
  9. PShome offered new ways of socially interacting with friends. A universal hub.

Negatives:

  1. The price was way to high for a lot of people, even then losing the company money. This was eventually fixed to an extend.
  2. Blu-Ray drive in the PS3 required installation of most games to work. Or multiple installations of a game to work during later parts of a game.
  3. The above was a problem issue with storage for the first several years of life.
  4. PSN was usually for awhile laggy, lacked a lot of content, and didn't have much stability in design or security.
  5. The Cell caused numerous issues for developers, and also prevented access to all resource avaialble for games.
  6. YLOD plagued the PS3 for the first few years, widespread, despite popular belief (but not too much) however this problem has been fixed in recent years. Starting around the introduction of the Slim.
  7. Further PS3 revisions removed features such as BC with PS2 games, Inside Tray, USB ports, etc.

Popular Best Selling Games:

  • Killzone 3,4 (FPS)
  • Uncharted 1,2,3 (Action Adventure)
  • GTAV (Action Adventure)
  • Little Big Planet 1,2 (Puzzle Platformer)
  • Resistance 1 ,2 (FPS)

  • Street Fighter IV,Super,Ultra (Fighting)
  • Dark Souls 1,2 (Arpg)
  • Resident Evil 5, 6 (TPS)
  • MLB Show series (Sports)

Wii:

The Wii was the console that had everyone wondering why. Just when it looked to be a joke it took off with getting kids and adults, not usually interested in gaming, to come to the console primarily with the game Wii Sports, the pack in. The Wii launched at a very cheap price, came with Wifi out the box, and offered Motion control gaming in place of buttons offering very easy and accessible gameplay. The Wii U VC allowed users to download games from older system from Nintendo and other companies, as well and a host of Apps that are accessible through it's online store. BC with the previous Nintendo console, Gamecube, is pretty much built in, and even has the GC controller ports inside, offering even a wider range of gaming experiences.

Positives:

  1. Offered casual friendly gaming with simple games.
  2. Improved motion controls for gaming compared to past attempts by companies.
  3. Cheap price point.
  4. A lot of initial support (for better or worse)
  5. It made money
  6. Wifi out the Box.
  7. Improved online system enabled for better integration socially with friends.

Negatives:

  1. Shovel Ware galore
  2. Very slow online development along with few improvements.
  3. Ecosystem barren and limited and hard to connect with friends or new people with FC's.
  4. Graphics were below par for a high profile company.
  5. Lack of support in later years, crashed and burned.
  6. Wii Mini revision removed a ton of features, that pretty much made the Wii a Wii.
  7. Few games took advantage of the motion controls.
  8. Disc Read Failures in starting years.
  9. Additional Control methods not involving the Gamecube controller requires to be attached to the Wii controller instead of a stand-alone accessory.
  10. Lack of over all system improvements through it's life cycle.
  11. Online Multiplayer heavily unstable with minimal improvement through it's life cycle.

Popular Best Selling Games:

  • Wii Series (Wii)
  • Just Dance Series (Dancing)
  • Red Steel 1,2 (FPS)
  • Sonic Secret Rings/Colors/&Mario (On rails/Platformer/Sports)
  • Zelda TP/SWS (Action Adventure)
  • Mario Galaxy 1,2, NSMB (platformer)
  • Super Smash bros. Brawl (Partyigthing)
  • Mario Party 8,9 (Party)
  • DKC R (platformer)
  • Kirby Return/Yarn (platformer)
  • Metroid Prime 3 (FPS)
  • Big Brain Academy (Education)
  • Super Paper Mario (Jrpg)
  • Animal Crossing (AnimalcareSimulator)
  • Micheal Jackson Experience (Sing/Dance)
  • Carnival Games/New Carnival Games (Party)

Hyperscan:

The Mattel Hyperscan, like all attempts at gaming Mattel does with hardware, introduced innovative features that would eventually become a big deal in the industry years later. Hyperscan, while at various retailers, was primarily partnered to be sold through Radioshack stores as well as Staples (.......) and uh, introduced the concept of NFC for use of saving data, adding characters to a game, or using it to develop characters and use them at a friends consoles. This very idea worked seamlessly and ended up a big deal in the industry later. Mattel intended this for the entry level casual gamer, especially younger kids using popular franchise at the time through exclusive licensing deals. All games are not too complicated with a color coded controller, and cards being scanned without hassle. Graphics on the hyperscan focus on 2D gameplay then most other consoles at the time.

Positives:

  1. A new interactive way to play games.
  2. Cheap Price
  3. Intuitive design and gameplay
  4. Welcoming to casuals
  5. Exclusive games with big names from companies like marvel.
  6. Seamless integration.

Negatives:

  1. Mattel seemed unsure to even release the product with a severely cautious approach including horribly low initial shipments hurting demand and retailer interest. A very limiting retail association as well.
  2. It has like 6 games. Probably another concern of whether this system would work. Should have gone deeper in.
  3. Lack of online support and modern features really hurt the console.
  4. The 2D graphics are quite poor for todays standards.

Popular Best Selling Games:

  • Marvel Heroes
  • Spider-Man
  • X-men

Zeebo:

Zeebo is a system aiming for emerging markets in mind or as a cheap alternative to other consoles. Zeebo is a more download based system that is used to play games already available on other platforms, however at very odd graphical settings and with less OR extra features not scene in other games. Games like SFIV, RE5, ifa, Need For Speed, Prey etc are examples of full fledged games, Angry Birds, Crash nitro Cart 3D, and Mobile Version of China Town Wars are examples of Phone games. The Zeebo, slightly more powerful than the Wii, ghas a vast library of existing games for cheap prices, whether it be a full AAA games, the mobile version of a full AAA or just a mobile games up-ported to the console with graphical enhancements. Using a similar controller set-up as the then popular Wii at the time of the systems release and support, to attract more People, the Zeebo was available in numerous countries. The console also has a couple dozen exclusives as well.

Positives:

  1. A large game library where even old content has updates.
  2. Cheap price
  3. Easy to access games with simple U.I.
  4. Good specs.

Negatives

  1. Not too many exclusives
  2. Requires Internet connection for access to a lot of games, hurting emerging markets factor.
  3. Terrible marketing.
  4. A lot of port rush jobs.
  5. Lack of games to push power of system.
  6. Other consoles ended up being toward the same price with more bang for the buck, slow price drop progress.

Best selling popular games not available.

Gamewave:

The Game Wave Entertainment System is a DVD player the focuses on the interactive part of the DVD player instead of being a actual DVD player or a games consoles, this is interesting due to the fact that it could seamlessly play movies with great quality out the box, beating other DVD players available at the time. The games used it's Remote control like controllers and can handle up to 6 players each, mostly geared toward family games or games that are turn based like playing triva games, or tic tac toe, board games, puzzles, etc. it even comes with a side slot that is attached solely for putting your Cases in.

Positives:

  • Infrared Remote controllers for easy acess for casual families.
  • Educational potential
  • Place to put your game cases.
  • Can Play DVDS better than most low-end DVD's at the time.

Negatives:

  1. Missing a lot of what a modern device, let alone a console, can do.
  2. Very small library of games.
  3. Lack of genre variety
  4. Very laggy interactivity.
  5. Tons of loading

Best selling popular games not available.

Well there you have it, these are the consoles that defined last generation, which was the best? Considering this generation is the most hard for many to decided it should be interesting.

So difficult for me to choose. I'd probably have to lean toward the PS3 just because games like Resistance, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank, inFamous, etc all were so fantastic as single player games. But the 360 was a VERY close second because I had so much fun with all of my friends with Madden, NBA, GTA and Call of Duty.

PS3 for sure. The Wii had some damn great exclusives, but I got more use out of the PS3.

That's the thing, it's the hardest gen of all. I mean so much on each console. Probably won't happen again, although this gen is still young (current one)

True. This gen is very young and so far it's basically just last gen all over again with the friggin' remasters.

The 360 started out really strong but overall I've gotta give it to the PS3 which started out pretty weak but after that continued to give us quality exclusives with many different IPs, several GOTY winning exclusives, a 10/10 exclusive, and really an amazing finish with 3 AAAE games in 2013.

Objectively speaking I'd have to say the ps3. Not sure how you can argue against full psx, ps2, ps3, and a bunch of older arcade games.

Xbox 360 for several gaming and non gaming reasons

Gaming

Preferred 360 games like :

Halo

Forza Mororsport

Gears Of War

Lost Odyssey

Mass Effect

Fable 2

Minecraft (by the time it came out on ps3 very late in the generation I'd already moved to PC gaming)

Viva Pinata (Guilty pleasure)

- Multi platform in games normally ran better on 360, also if you intended to play online Xbox live was a better experience than PSN.

Non Gaming Reasons

- Netflix crashed far less often on my 360, and seemed to load faster and have less buffering issues while watching movies or TV shows.

- Media streaming was better, could stream anything from my phone or PC straight to my console with very little messing around.

- Internet connection, any updates or games, movies I'd download with the 360 downloaded a lot faster than through my ps3. It used to take about 3 hours for ps3 to download an update.

My Ps3 was inactive most the generation, only game I liked and played for more than a few hours on my ps3 was Warhawk.

PS3 and it's not even close. It absolutely killed 360 in exclusives.

It's a hard one for me because if it wasn't for RRoD, 360 would've been my main console last gen for sure. But after 3 consoles breaking down, I'd had enough and switched to PS3, which I used for 90% of my gaming last gen.

So PS3 by default I guess.

I got a 360 for Christmas 2008 and I got a Ps3 Christmas 2010, so I was defintely a late comer to the party of the last gen consoles (never got a wii but my best friend from May 2014 - on has one, and my little brother/sister have had one for a couple years :P)

I got a good 4 years of use out of the 360 (stopped using it much in 2013) and a good 3 years of use out of my Ps3.

From both of those, I'd say I enjoyed my Ps3 better. I'm a huge fan of RPGs and story heavy games, so the Ps3 won me over with its exclusive games like Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Graces F, God of War games, Uncharted games, The Last of Us, remastered versions of great games like Jak and Daxter series, Sly Cooper series, Metal Gear Legacy Collection, and many many others. Wonderful memories of playing multiplats too like read dead redemption, oblivion, skyrim, fallout 3, Dragon Age, Soul Calibur 4.. Don't forget the ridiclous catalogue of great classic Ps1 games to download and the decent Ps2 download collection too. It was my go to console for my final 2 years of college. I don't think I ever had a console in my life where I could count on being able to get such reliably enjoyable single player games until Ps3. Admittedly I didn't have one in the early years where apparently good games were sparse ; By the time I got mine it already had a huge wealth of amazing games to buy and many for cheap ;D

360. My go to console for final year of high school and first couple of years in college. I had a lot of fun playing Tales of Vesperia, The Last Remnant, Lost Oddesey, Infinite Undiscovery, Fable 2. Very fun memories playing various sports games like Madden 10 , NBA Live 08 and 10, NBA 2K11. However outside of those games I felt like the console was a bit lacking in great exclusives in comparison to Sony and Ps3. That's a big reason why I used Ps3 mostly and didn't touch my 360 much for my final 2 years of college..

Wii I never owned. Had the chance to play Wiisports a few times with my little siblings.. I used to play Tatsunoko vs Capcom a lot with my RA in freshman year of college, loved it. Nowadays I play Super Smash Bros Brawl (Project M) a lot with my best friend. I simply didn't have the chance to really evaluate the system very well, outside of having a ton of fun with friends on the few select fighting/party games I played for it. Reading about it and learning more about it over the years, it seems to have a lot of crappy games but has at least a few gems (Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Xenoblade Chronicles, Metroid Prime Trillogy, The Last Story) that I would still like to play when I get my WiiU.

No surprise PS3 is winning. X360 came out swinging, and props to MS for making it a close battle.... but MS was always just going after what Sony has been doing for years. Playstation > Xbox.

PS3 is still getting Persona 5, Yakuza 5, some new Tales of game this year and it just had Guilty Gear XRD last month. If that's not a sign of superiority then I don't know what is. I mean, of the 3 last gen consoles the PS3's the only one still getting exclusives. It's like a gift that keeps on giving.

Definitely the ps3. Great games. I was never a fan of the 360 though.

I love multiplayer games..but i like them on pc more..so some good story driven games from naughty dog made the system awesome

Ps3. Sony always delivers in the games department, even when they stumble all the time. You always see them trying to please their fans, third party devs, and their share holders all at the same time.

Overall Xbox 360 had better multiplats and big games like Mass Effect, FEAR, Oblivion,Skyrim etc were either delayed or got broken ports on PS3. However, if you only consider exclusives then PS3 wins, thanks to Naughty Dog. Only company that is still making must own exclusives (as far as I'm concerned).

Exclusives I liked on Xbox 360:

Alan Wake (later ported to PC and it was easily one of the best games I've ever played)

Mass Effect (timed exclusive)

Exclusives I liked on Ps3:

Uncharted 2

The Last of Us

Metal Gear Solid 4

.

Ps3 wins.

PS3 for me, i did have a 360 when it first dropped to tide me over until the PS3 then it was dropped.

I prefer Sony games and consoles and prob always will.

Playstation 3 in the long run with things like Valkyria Chronicles, Demon's Souls, The Last of Us, Journey, Yakuza, and the like. 360 had some quality stuff, and that early multiplat advantage, but that ultimately evened itself out. Plus only Bayonetta was an excellent multiplat that was so much worse on PS3. Otherwise the game either was meh (like Bethesda games) or the advantage was minimal to the point where it's like, PC was better anyway.

PS3's exclusives trump the 360s though both in quantity and quality. And I would rather have the PS3's best stuff than the Wii's best stuff, which after the Mario Galaxy games, isn't all that great.

PS3, and I would add to your list of positives that new games and exclusives are still coming out for it despite PS4 being over a year old. In contrast to Nintendo who seemingly abandoned the wii in 2011.

Yeah but 360 has new games coming out to though. And apparently, so does the Zeebo.

- 360 started out strong with games like Kameo, Saint's Row, Gears of War, Alan Wake. All new and interesting IP. At the end of its lifetime it got a pathetic amount of exclusives and always the same games (Halo, Gears of War, Forza). Makes me never want to buy an Xbox ever again.

- Wii started out strong too, with some really intriguing controls. Then you find out those are only fun for a couple of minutes and the great games on the system would've benefited from using regular controls. Big waste of potential.

- PS3 had a rough start, with an insane price point and barely any games. But the system really turned things around and is by far my most favourite console of last gen. Lots of great PS3 exclusive, great new IP and an incredible amount of HD remasters of PS2 games I missed out on.

Much like a parent that doesn't have a favorite child but loves each for his individuality.....I like all three....Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. They all entertained me.

Honestly, I want to say it was a functional tie between the 360 and PS3. 360 had the superior first half of the gen and PS3 had the better second half.

The Wii peaked early on and then coasted for the remainder of the Gen. Though they did push out Super Mario Galaxy 2.

I though it was all games, now it's exclusives? Which one is it?

Still an epic battle between the Wii and Game Wave for 4th.

I say Xbox 360, it had the greatest impact in promoting new standards for consoles. Sure, none of the ideas like having friends lists and instant awareness, game invites, built in wireless controller functionality, HDD, online store for demos, arcade games, digital retail games, videos, music, apps for streaming movies and TV on demand, apps for other things, party chat, strong online integration, game patches, upgrades, DLC... none of it entirely original, nothing that hasn't been done before in one way or another, but having it standard as all part of the basic package, that was new. Oh, and most importantly the Xbox 360 did a great deal in terms of performance to help bridge the gap between console and PC gaming promoting a larger multiplatform environment. Surely Sony adjusted their plans for the PS3 to compete with Microsoft and in many respects reinforced many of these good standards. Had Microsoft not paved the way, don't expect Sony would have put out the PS3 as it was, something that cost them like $950 to make and sold for $600, but, Blu-ray and Cell was in large part a reason for that, and I don't feel they'd have been pressed to push that if they didn't have the Xbox 360 to contend with. I don't expect the legacy of the Blu-ray to be that long lived. I think people will further be shifting into digital on consoles this gen. Consoles having to be more online integrated leaves littler and littler room for the benefits of physical copies. Overall, I think MS was the console of last gen.

Xbox 360 was also a much strong console for gaming with friends for me, party chat feature makes getting into games and maintaining communication very easy. By contrast, the PS3 was horrible for this, no party chat to maintain communication in matchmaking, even worse if one person makes it in and another doesn't, or we end up on opposite teams, coordinating getting back together is so painstakingly frustrating by contrast since communication is limited to game lobbies or in game team chat, or having to go through the painstaking process of writing text messages to each other.

Uh some of your list was original or came from the OR Xbox.

As for Blu-ay that has never actually took off. DVD will not die before Blu-Ray will. DVD's also make more money. it did good during the peak though and does ok now.

But anyway don't forget, Xbox 360 if you wanted the best version, was not that far off price with the PS3 (especially the gimped model which was still expensive) Xbox 360 had 3 sku's, The cheapest was originally the most brought and the one that had the most problems.

For me, it was the XBOX 360 (and still playing to this day)

  1. Stable Online infrastructure
  2. I prefer the exclusives/genres it focused on
  3. Comfy Controllers
  4. Better multiplatform games

Dark Souls, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Dragon Dogma, Assassin's Creed, for 360 in that order.

It was the 90's babies golden era in video games.

Ps3 for me: Except for skyrim I never had any problem with multiplatform, they all ran great. So many exclusive that I enjoyed: resistance 1, infamous 1 and 2, uncharted 2 and 3, Valkyria chronicles, tales of xilia 1, 2, killzone 2, flower, ratchet and clank: tools of destruction/ a crack in time ( I even like all for 1 to a lesser degree), Heavy rain ( beyond two souls is my next game to play) Ni no kuni. I'm sure I'm forgetting some

All those memories of you sitting at home, by yourself, eating chips - while your 360 gathered dust in the corner because it had no exclusives and you sat on System wars being a massive troll. Ahhh sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset.

360 by a metric ton. Ps3 is good for a handful of games, like Valkyria chronicles and the ratchet trilogy. I seriously cannot think of more. Always wanted to play folklore though, that one looked good.

Uncharted , god of war , killzone were all mediocre games though I enjoyed them at the time. Last of us is trash, heavy rain is trash. Infamous is hardly worth mentioning.

The dualshock 3 is terrible.

Xbox 360 had many more features, like playing music while gaming or full game installs.

I enjoyed owning a ps3, but the 360 thoroughly trounces it.
