The beginning:
After the toturoial, Skyrim throws you straight into an overwhelming world, couple of markers on your map and a ton of beauitfull vistas.
- Skyrim may have bugged on me continuisly but I've yet to see the absolute "Do you want this character" screen, unlike Oblivion and the Fallouts, so deciding on my perfect starting character took several replays of the entire intro.-
So we go to Whitefall, get a few quests and look through the personal belongings of everyone.... Very soon, I find myself checking books exclusively for the possibility of quest or a skillpoint, I fastforeward through most conversations as well.
You check your journal, visit one of the nearby dungeons, and emerge victorius, time to check out skills.
Lock Picking/pick pocketing? Extra carry weight is nice, otherwise these trees have very little value, you'll overcome most obstacles, simply by using the respective skills.
Speech? This skill is called "speech" to attract RPG enthusiasts, it's litteral name is "value of everything in relation to you". robably the least used skill in the game. Veterans and newcomers alike neglec this waste of time.
Stealth: Want to be a stealthy character? I suppose that aforementioned thievery-related skills may look more attractive but remember that you will have to endure a lot of glitches, (both good and bad), before your skill is so high that you're invisible, even when crouched in front of an NPC in full day-light.
Spells: Duration and power buffs....
Weapons: Durations and power buffs....
Armor: Mitigation buff and penalty reduction...
So 1 hour after escaping excecution; my dual-wielding, light armour wearing conjuration orc is personally involved with several individuals and their personal agenda. By now, I'm constantly checking my journal, map and inventory to make sure I'm on the right track.
Conclusion: The thrill of improving a perk, the impressive vistas and the urge the craft completely absorbs me; I'm lost in the engrossing universe of Skyrim.
Dark Souls: You're an undead soul, given the chance of making your own mark. There you are, that raven looked cool but what now?
Did a boulder run over you when ascending a flight of stairs? Did you receive a so called "Estus Flask" from a dying person and defeat a large monster boss?
Welcome to firelink Shrine.
A couple of people around..... You're told to ring a bell from two different locations; one far above you and one far below you..... Checking out the immediate area provides a couple of items and a graveyard guarded by fierce undeads....
You die a few times and realize that the morning star you found, is a bludgeoning weapoing, unlike your current axe; suddenly you can actually hurt those skeletons in the graveyard, even if engaging them is a cautious endeavour... Where do we go from here by the way????
10 hours in:
Skyrim keeps throwing lore at me..... My persistance in book reading has taken a certain nature upon itself: I find a book -> read it -> cancel....
I no longer read quests, it's actually easier to just press onwards and consult gamefaqs, when you forget that someone dropped the claw item for this particular quest.
Muppet, (my character), is an Orc.
I'm below level 20 with a build that leans towards Dual Wielding, Destruction and Conjuration.... Between my flame atronach, my companion and my two conjured blades, everything dies fast; I have'nt seen anything that implies that the dificulty curve intends to play tricks on me. I finish all fights by conjuring my, (very much), prolonged flame atronach summoning and the I melee everything to death with the help from my pet and companion.
Quests feel a little like checking off markers on a list now.
Suddenly, I become aware that I have no idea what the main plot is all about.
I'm a dragonborn but everyone seems rather neutral about it... Soon, I realize that everyone fanatically believes in the concept of water under the bridge.
Kill the local annoying alchemy lady and rob her blind? Even if you get caught, you can go back a week later, noone remembers...
Turns out they really meant the thing about choice! Everyone in Skyrim is waiting for me to come and affect their world....
Dark Souls left me near that damn cemetary. So I'm an undead, chosen to challenge the age of fire.
I've searched the area for a few neat items and now I'm told that I need to ring two certain bells, both located in opposite directions: Up and down.
Ignoring that, there's a cemetary next to me.... I methodically work my way through every undead in the graveyard, harvesting my Winged Spear, (along with other things), then I check out my gear......
Creating a new Skyrim character is a rollrcoaster; you can focus on every character aspect, create any ****you desire, as long as you remember that there is no depth to be found.
15 hous into Dark Souls, you may be looking at certain descriptions and wonder where they came from. 15 hours into Skyrim and you're autoskipping almost every single piece of text you see.
