2013 is going to be a staggering year for the games industry at retail, at least its second half. There are just so many big and heavy hitters lined up. From Grand Theft Auto V, the next, eagerly awaited installment in Rockstar's crime saga, to Pokemon X and Y, the newest generation of Nintendo's flagship handheld franchise, and the first legitimately tangible leap forward that the games have taken in over a decade; there is Call of Duty: Ghosts, the new game in a series that perenially seems to sell, no matter what, and there is FIFA 14, the newest in EA Sports' venerable franchise that never stops breaking records.
Then there are games like Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Monster Hunter 4, Gran Turismo 6, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and so on. All massive franchises, proven at retail, all hitting us this year.
Which one do you think will sell the most?
Personally, I think Pokemon will; now, I anticipate GTA 5 setting records at launch across industries, and IÂ know that its immediate sales will far outpace anything Pokemon will be able to muster (plus GTA will be on more platforms than Pokemon, which is an exclusive), but GTA sells right out of the gate, and then slows down; it doesn't have much of a tail, whereas Pokemon is a slow burn. The fact that Pokemon is a proven system seller, coupled with the hype around the newest one, and the fact that it seems to be such an exciting shake up of the series (meaning more people are excited in it than the usual Pokemon game), means that I think that by December, more copies of Pokemon X and Y will have been sold than any other game that launches this year.
What do you think?
