After 8 long years, the Switch is finally on its way out. As far as memories, I’ll always remember watching the original presentation with friends and thinking this system was going to be special. And it was.. at that time, nothing quite like it. Now everyone is on the hybrid/portable train. I also think of that funny Switch commercials where a group of kids were playing the system on a roof which no one does lol.

As far as memorable gaming experiences, here are some that come to mind:

  • LoZ Tears of the Kingdom / Breath of the Wild: Breath of the Wild brought Zelda back to relevancy. What was also amazing is how underpowered these games are, and yet they still managed to be better than most open world games. Haven’t loved a Zelda game this much since the Ocarina days.
  • Nintendo saving Platinum Games: Without Nintendo, there would be no Bayonetta 2/Bayonetta 3/Bayonetta Origins. And we wouldn’t get unique games like Astral Chain. I hope they continue to fund their games, even though Platinum might be on its way out. Thank you, Nintendo!
  • Good AA games: many of the Switch games weren’t big AAA games that tried to push graphics or anything like that. That does have its downsides, but many of these games still managed to be great. Games like Fire Emblem Three Houses, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Luigi’s Mansion 3, are all great.
  • Switch Pro Controller: love this controller, and it has amazing battery life. I’m very much looking forward to the next iteration for the Switch 2.
  • Super Smash Bros: a couple companies tried to make their own Smash Bros, but nothing comes close to the original. I wonder what the future is for this franchise, but man, Ultimate was awesome! And also a trip down memory lane.

How about you, SW? What will be your favorite memories of the Switch?

I mean the games are obviously the main thing... the amount of truly amazing games I've played on the Switch is pretty insane (and some of them are genres I'd never have thought I'd like but ended up loving them). Nintendo's first/second party output has been incredible.

The other surprise of the Switch for me has been the indie scene. This became more and more important to me as the generation went on, and I hope this continues with Switch 2.

And obviously the hardware itself is great. The hybrid formfactor was just what I wanted for this stage in my life, and I find it hard to have it any other way now.

Playing Splatoon 3's multiplayer. It was so good that I didn't even touch the single player campaign.

Switch 2 will probably be the main platform for indies. It‘s perfect for it.

Paying £39.99 for Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers and realizing the entire digital shop is a scam, and eventually going back to Steam.

  • Trying out many different (third party) controllers haha
  • Mario Kart 8 already being deluxe and then getting a years worth of extra downloadable content
  • Mario 3D World getting a super fun, supe bite sized story DLC out of f^ù$king nowhere!!!
  • F-zero 99 being a thing, hey at least it was more F-zero
  • NIntendo sitting on Metroid Prime remaster for a very long time but eventually releasing it
  • Amazing Capcom Ace Attorney re-releases

And last but not least, amazing advertisements by Nintendo at the start. This wasn't like: hey show this to your grandma how cool we are. This was more: take your Skyrm wherever you want, you absolute nerd.

Brilliant.

Is Nintendo an indie-friendly corporation? From what I've read they're not exactly great in that regard.

I agree, though, that given the generally low hardware requirements of independent games, seems like Switch 2 would be great.

The Switch having a lot of great exclusive games. I hope the Switch 2 also delivers the same amount of good games as the Switch 1 did.

Charizard and I calling it a year before it was announced. I remember being like holy crap they're really doing it!

Playing the witcher 3 and Skyrim on it. Still can't believe that little device could push those games out in a respectable way.

Breath of the wild was incredible.

@SolidGame_basic: I didn't. Game really didn't resonate with me. The thought of going back in to do shrines and continue using the ultra hand stuff is just a hard pass. I'm sure I could ignore a lot of it and just play it straight up but the game played like molasses running uphill in December every time I tried to make progress....

Seeing people get excited about Link's Awakening, seeing Wart in 3D, and Mario Wonder, portable Dark Souls, and some good JRPGs.

Also seeing some impressive port efforts even if I still wouldn't play that version of the game. But Alien Isolation was very well done and holds up actually.

The first thing that came to mind was me landing a Ganon punch on some poor kid at a smash bros tournament in the first round.

I felt like a big man.

Good times playing Breath of the Wild though, it was pretty addictive for a while.

I'd say it has to be with xenoblade chronicles 3, when you actually go into the wilds and see the vastness of the world, and just watching my nieces and nephews having fun with smash or mario kart.

Best memory is probably how I got it in the first place. In 2018 my 2-year-old daughter and I were in a car accident. Car was totalled, but we were mostly fine. I had a concussion and for a few days my legs hurt a lot, couldn't do much walking. That weekend we were supposed to go to a big family get together up at a ranch nearish to Lake Tahoe to scatter my grandparents ashes (my grandma had recently died). So, I missed that. My mother in law got me a Switch as a sympathy present. Thought that was really sweet of her, and right off the bat gave me an attachment to the console.

Later that year when Smash Bros Ultimate was announced, I got excited in a way that I hadn't been about a game launch since I was a kid. One of the only games I ever pre-ordered. But a few days before it came out, the heater in my house broke. When a technician came to check it out, he went to go under the house and smelled something awful. Turned out a drain line from one of our toilets was boken, leaking black water all over the place. So my family stayed at my parents house for about two weeks while that all got taken care of. This was around the Holidays, so a few old friends were in town visiting family. I invited them to a big Smash Bros party at my parent's house, like old times. Had a blast.

So yeah, Switch has provided me a bit of relief when life was a little crap. But beyond that I will always cherish memories of playing Mario Kart, Odyssey, 3D World, Smash Bros, ARMS, Animal Crossing and many more with the kiddos. Great system.
