Next consoles are quite far away...M$ stated that next Xbox is coming at 2012 earliest....So in these 3 full years none will have to upgrade seriously...
Because people buy hardware just to see benchmarks. People don't need an excuse to buy new hardware.
Some people make it their life's goal to try to have the fastest computer ever. There will always be buyers for this market, and not too mention a lot of people like to get their games up to 100 FPS like Call Of Duty 4 was with just an 8800 GTS.
I find market just right for Nvidia/ATI because they don't necessarily have to push the envelope in graphics, instead they could focus on releasing cheaper GPUs with similar performance. Maybe open up their industry a bit.
I'll be glad to get the power of a HD4870 for under $200 bucks.
Technology doesn't stop moving in the pc environment even with minimal sales they'll just power along like a million nuclaer powered energizer bunnies. Theres always someone willing to buy whatever you selling, these companies don't just thrive off video games you have to remember they make tons of money in other sectors.
Lol so very true, I keep hearing hermits say how PCs are constantly getting better and better and evolving while consoles are at a complete stand still yet... Where are the games? Where are all the games that support all this high end hardware? Crysis? Is that all? One game? Honestly, PCs are at just as much of a stand still than consoles are. Develepers are not willing to pay photo realistic graphics and get there games pirated at the same time.Dahaka-UK
GTA IV for PC with its updated graphics should push the envelope a bit.. Also pretty sure consoles would have a hard time doing Stalker: Clear Sky.

We still don't have PCs that can run Crytek Engine 2 for a decent price, and they're already talking about 3? This, along with DRM, are why PC gaming is dying.

Sure we do. 600 dollars is a decent price for a PC that can run Crysis on high.

Multiplats, just as good on the consoles, only a slight downgrade. Still not worth justifing buying a high end PC.

A slight downgrade? Okay, who has a screenshot comparison of Far Cry 2 at ultra high on PC and on consoles?

I also buy PC games for mods... but that doesnt require a high end PC, nor does any game require one.
Not far, on a PC platform the higher up you go in terms of reqs the smaller you're making your market. Combine that with piracy and going on consoles makes a lot more sense. At least if they make a game for the Wii or PS3 they can be sure that every PS3/Wii sold can potentially play it.fluxorator
I really doesn't take much to run any game.
Since I cannot see a game more demanding that Crysis (even Warhead is less demanding) in the scope of 2 years who in their right mind will buy the 3xx series? And the HD5xxx series? I mean in time the HD4870 will be dropping in priceand with no games demanding an upgrade I can see the GPU race stalling to a halt...True_Gamer_
There will always be a better looking game... just like before Crysis.
Vavle say that graphics have topped out, which to be honest is not true.
Im sure they mean topped out for the moment, but apparently virtual worlds are coming by 2020.
I also believe that realistic graphics will be with us by around 2015 or just after, on PC at least. Crysis may have good graphics but that game is a joke, it can only just about play well on a good system and even then it slows down so it cant really be called s a good game.
Here Dahaka, some Far Cry 2 screens in Ultra high settings on 4x AA in 1680 x 1050 resolution, just for you. :P
Sorry for the small pics, but photobuckets has limits on high space pictures and it reduces them.

Aw come on.. You didn't have to go to all that trouble.. I know PC graphics are vastly superior to console graphics. It's just, the very fact there on consoles in the first place and they play almost exactly the same just makes it seem less worth while getting a high end PC over the much cheaper option. I don't think this was ment to be a PC vs console thread anyway. It's more to do with the fact that newer graphics cards just arent needed cause that older graphics cards do just fine, so whats the point in em if it's only for a select few games.

It actually wasn't much trouble at all... lol. Anyway, you are right about a lot of the multiplats being the same, like Dead Space for example, I'm sure this is almost exactly the same except for the controls and maybe minor graphics upgrade because the game doesn't give much graphics options for upgrading like Far Cry 2.
And if I have the money, I would probably upgrade again, even though I just upgraded. For some reason, getting that new stuff and putting it in my PC just gives me that certain... satisfaction. Or maybe I'm just a graphics whore.
With that being said, PC gaming is well worth it if it doesn't put a large dent in your pocket. Especially if you love WRPG's and RTS's. However, we still have mods for a lot of multi-plats like Oblivion. It completely changed the game when I load it up with mods compared to vanilla Oblivion.

Your making me want to buy Fallout 3 and Farcry 2 from steam now lol.. but doing that kind of demeans the fact of owning a PS3 and XBOX360 in the first place. Which is one of the reasons why I hate all these multiplats. There should be a good flow of unique games for all 3 systems otherwise theres no point in all 3 existing in the first place. I'd only buy the console versions for the achievements and trophies anyway.

You do know that Fallout 3 on the PC has achievements... right? lol
Although Far Cry 2 doesn't.
Nvidia said they'll simplify their GeForce brand for the average customer who doesn't know what the hell graphics board is.
So, I guess, we're expecting some big changes.

So we are moving towards the death of the "expensive PC gaming" myth? Thanks god for that...
i can easily see how they can push it, mainly in textures, next gen i can see that reaching CGI quality+, think the killzone 2 CGI but actually realtime and then some.cry engine 3 will happen thats what ;)

but yea crytek did mention they have intrest in developing for the PS4, but i hope they dont loose their PC roots, like epic, which sucks now...UT3, was the worst...and gears is overrated even for a console game... i just want the good old epic back...o well
I find market just right for Nvidia/ATI because they don't necessarily have to push the envelope in graphics, instead they could focus on releasing cheaper GPUs with similar performance. Maybe open up their industry a bit.
I'll be glad to get the power of a HD4870 for under $200 bucks.

Nvidia and ATI need to get there drivers together. I'm tired of seeing display driver has stopped responding or a BSOD. It's like they release cards so fast, they just leave the old ones behind. Slap a sloppy driver out and call it a day.
They need to both slow down and take more time on their products.

It's not that there aren't games that would take advantage of top end GPUs, it's just that the graphics quality you get from mid range GPUs is almost as good for the untrained eye. It might look like you're paying hundreds of bucks for some extra AA ..diminishing returns and all that jazz.
I don't mind tho, good graphics for cheap price. And the companies can prolly save some money in R&D. Expect business to pick up come next gen, and slow down again towards the end. All gaming is heavily tied to consoles these days there's no denying it.
