Nearly 75% of every family that I know of, that own a Wii, and have had it for more than a few months only own the game that came with it.

For them they bought it as "The Sports Machine", or "Nintendo Player".

So since no one I know is even looking at games other than the bowling, what would have happened to the Wii and it's sales had it not come with Wii Sports? What would hook the mindless drones in on this?

What if there was no Wii Sports at all?

IMO It would have definitley been a fad that would have died out a lot quicker. As it stands it's just prolonging it's death.

So, you honestly still think the Wii is a fad that will die out soon? :| *sigh* Will fanboys never learn? 20 million shipped in its first year, GotY 2007, first AAAE of 2008, biggest hits releasing later this year.... Surely, you're not serious.

anecdotal evidence doesn't mean much. I'd say sales figures mean a whole lot more. and if you think it's only "hardcore" wii buying 3 times as many games as the average 360 owners you're deluding yourself.

The Wii is a heck of a lot of fun to play. I tend to think most people who feel it's a fad are either friendless or have never had enough time to play one.

I bought it on opening day for Zelda. I had planed to buy Wii sports when I first saw it at E3. Plus Wiisports does not come with the Wii in Japan. So that kinda blows the whole what if the Wii did not come with Wiisports.

It's still within fad status. Look at how many units the Furby sold. Or how about Cabbage Patch Kids, Tickle me Elmo, Trolls, Pokemon Cards and such. Yeah. It will die out.

Furby sold 40 million units worldwide.

Why? Because it's true that things do sell. It's how long they stay on the market that matters. I truly do believe that it is a fad.

Throwing hardware sales at me doesn't prove otherwise. It just means that there are more and more people out there who are caught up in the hype. Once those people get their Wii they'll play Wii Sports for a few weeks and put it away.

It's a vicious cycle that will end once enough people who are sold on the hype get their machine and the supply of Drones run out.

You're still ignoring the fact that the Wii had the highest software attach rate in December. :|

Maybe that has to do with the fact that it comes with a game and those numbers are included. Which automatically puts the Wii in the 1:1 category by default.

Without WiiSports, the Wii would have still had a 9 to 1 software tie-in ratio. It still would have been higher than the other consoles, by a LONG shot. Your argument has failed. Give it up.

Both are cute, family friendly, easy barrier of entry, cheap, and are novelties.

Sales of either consoles or games don't all of a sudden mean that it's here to stay. When we start to see those sales plateau and drop off is when it's over. Which could be very soon, once all the Baby Boomers get theirs.

the yoyo was a fad for a time. it however has always been on the market. so why was it a fad too? because for a brief amount of time there was a huge surge in it's popularity and sales compared to the rest of the time it was on the market.

now with that as an example we would see that the ps3 is probably the biggest fad of this gen. it was hugely popular and had big sales at launch. and pitiful afterwards. the wii has been pretty constant over the same amount of time. in order for the wii to be a fad it would need a huge drop in popularity and sales, which you can try to predict but will not know about till that's happened.

so you see the wii isn't a fad right now. we might look back on it and say it was at the end of the gen but right now, it simply isn't.

Woulda coulda shoulda.

Nintendo is making a zillion dollars from the Wii and making MS and Sony wonder WTF they are doing. There is no point debating hypothetical alternate realities.

Ok then let's turn this around.

All we've seen so far is people declaring that it's not a fad and spouting out sales numbers.

Prove that it's NOT a fad. Why should I believe that it's going to be useful to me for the next 5 years. Try doing this without sales numbers.

Developers will develop games. People will play games on this machine. It willl gain some media funcionality as it matures. Things that grow in significant ways have longer life spans. Simple, really.

Yea ok Nintendo DS the fastest selling handheld of all time I seem to remember it being a fad aswell. Now we have Nintendo Wii the fastest selling console of all time, HMM I guess if Nintendo keeps making "fads" like that then they should keep it up.

Are you talking about the Wii? It sounds like this logic can be applied to any current-gen game console. Why would someone want to use a Wii beyond Nintendo games and Wii Sports.

proving it's not a fad is easy. popularity is still high and sales are still great. it's only a fad when that goes down. as for the next 5 years. no one can prove that for anything. you can't prove that it is a fad though. because right now it isn't. fads are only determined after the fact.

+2 internets. However looking at the trend as it is makes me think that it is a fad.

3rd party games are bady rated and don't sell very well. People who do buy games end up getting crap. Many people who have played-out Wii Sports don't use their Wii anymore. The technology is starting to look really dated. I find no lasting appeal in anything it has to offer ATM.

The fact that casuals and non-gamers are buying a Wii because its the "in" thing means its a fad. The fact that core gamers and hardcore gamers are buying it because of the games means its not a fad. You could argue it both ways.

Without Wii Sports a lot of casuals and non-gamers wouldn't have bought it and IMO thats a good thing. Trust me if if the Wii's install base was mostly core gamers like the 360 and PS3 Wii Fit would have never sold a million in Japan and Wii Play would have never sold over 6 million.

no. Wii sports as a bundled title was announced as an afterthought. most people bought the console for the same reason they always buy a nintendo console: the first party line up.

Here's the problem with that idea: You claimed that it is a fad, thus YOU have to prove it. We didn't come out and initially claim that it WASN'T a fad - thus, it's not our job to prove it. Using that logic, a police officer could approach a random guy during an investigation and say "prove you're not the murderer" - and use that as a basis for arresting him. It simply doesn't work. The Wii is selling STEADILY well and has impressive software numbers (especially in December).

But the fact of the matter is that Wii Sports DOES exist, it IS packed in, and the Wii is selling faster than the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Making a "What if" statement about it doesn't change anything; it's just another topic to debate on System Wars that will result in someone getting flamed and someone else getting pissed off when people don't agree with them.

Using that logic, a police officer could approach a random guy during an investigation and say "prove you're not the murderer" - and use that as a basis for arresting him. It simply doesn't work. The Wii is selling STEADILY well and has impressive software numbers (especially in December).Erkidu

Considering in Canada you're Innocent till proven otherwise...

If you're all saying that I can't prove it's a fad then how can you prove the counter-argument? It has to be one or the other. Things can only "be" or "not be" (unless we're talking Physics, which I pwn at).

What if there was no Wii Sports at all?

IMO It would have definitley been a fad that would have died out a lot quicker. As it stands it's just prolonging it's death.

vitz3

What if Halo didn't exist?

What if Final Fantasy 7 came out for the N64 instead of the PS1?

What if Street Fighter 2 sucked?

See, I can play the "What If" game too.

What if I didn't care?

What I'm saying is that if Wii Sports wasn't bundled in, the Wii would have plateaued by now.

Except for one inconvenient little FACT. Wii sports isn't bundled in with the Wii for every country and yet the Wii is crushing the competition in every country.

The only way to believe the Wii would have "plateaued" by now is if you think NA is the only market that impacts world wide sales...which is completely illogical and ignorant or the world market.

It is impossible to prove a negative.

You just did. If it's impossible to prove otherwise then you've just proven a negative.

So, you honestly still think the Wii is a fad that will die out soon? :| *sigh* Will fanboys never learn? 20 million shipped in its first year, GotY 2007, first AAAE of 2008, biggest hits releasing later this year.... Surely, you're not serious.Erkidu
Not necessarily a "fad" due to Nintendo's main demographic is quite large, but I don't see how "gamers" would use the Wii as a "main" system--just my personal thoughts. Too bad the Wii misses out on some of the best multiplatform games. I would rather have Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Rock Band and Assassin's Creed then just one game, or... the Wii's "Game of the Year". Hey, more power to you if you think that having one quality game is better than having multiple quality games.

Ok then let's turn this around.

All we've seen so far is people declaring that it's not a fad and spouting out sales numbers.

Prove that it's NOT a fad. Why should I believe that it's going to be useful to me for the next 5 years. Try doing this without sales numbers.

vitz3
It being successful in the next few years is just common sence. It's sold alot of copies, so publishers, including nintendo themselves, will capitalize on this and release more games.

It was Wii Sports that convinced me to buy it, and since then I haven't seen a game that actually needs motion controls. It's disappointing.

[QUOTE="musicalmac"]There isn't much sense in that argument.vitz3

Furbys (a one-note toy) cost $50 at most, a Wii is $250 or more if bought on Ebay or bundle. If they're spending that much money, it's not gonna be a fad. Plus, most people who bought the Wii at launch bought Zelda with it, and they would have played that instead (or until Wii Play rolled along). Thread over.

proving it's not a fad is easy. popularity is still high and sales are still great. it's only a fad when that goes down. as for the next 5 years. no one can prove that for anything. you can't prove that it is a fad though. because right now it isn't. fads are only determined after the fact.

1. 3rd party are improving. much like it did for ps1. also 15 of 20 wii games in the top 100 in the US last month were 3rd party.

2. you have no data to conclude that ppl don't buy other games. in fact the software sales figures would suggest you're wrong.

3. The graphics were dated when it was launched. ppl aren't buying it for that.

4. your opinion doesn't make something a fad.

I'm simply saying that there is no evidence to suggest that the Wii is a fad. If there is no evidence to support the accusation that a particular man is a murderer - he is proclaimed innocent. It's really not that difficult to understand.

I also own a 360 - so I get the best of both worlds. I simply could not make it through the generation without Nintendo's first-party titles. They are always top-notch.

Ok this is getting really off topic. In police investigations they have forensics, witnesses, probable cause, opportunity, motive etc. They have to consider all these things BEFORE even making an arrest.

There is no evidence to prove that the Wii is not a fad at the moment aside from spouting pretty numbers and saying how high the attache rate is. There is evidence, however, that at the moment 3rd party games are not selling well, are poorly rated and how dated the tech is.

Anyone who quotes any numbers from the holiday season needs to check again. Things sell well during the Holidays. I'm sure the Thighmaster sold a ****load this holiday too.

Furbies, Elmo and other fads had slow time points in the year. Like before Christmas Furbies were selling for over $100 each. After Christmas no one cared.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A fad is defined as something that becomes very popular with a small group of people for a short period of time.

A year plus is not a short period of time. Sorry but there you go with out sales.
