Poll What would you trade 30 FPS for? (34 votes)

Cinematic Experience 3%
Splitscreen Multiplayer 18%
More Complex Gameplay 24%
More 'busy' gameplay 3%
60 FPS is non-negotiable 53%

A redux of my last poll with more expiation because people misunderstood me. :(

Yes, whenever possible you want 60+ FPS. However modern games are more than just gameplay. For example I play Skyrim with 200+ mods on PC. These mods make it impossible for me to have 60+ FPS but they they not only provide better graphics but more quest, gameplay features, NPCs, and better combat. I play Skyrim for the adventure so bells, whistles, and additional content > FPS. 60 FPS is nice but not mandatory for all games. I'm sure there are many great games from this gen and past gens you guys consider your favorites despite being 30 FPS and I doubt 60FPS is really that big of a deal for most people in turn based games.

Now on with the poll:

Cinematic Experience: Top of the line graphics and presentation, better for games you play for the story and immersion.

Splitscreen Multiplayer: Local multiplayer isn't being left out because of greed (although that may be p0art of it) when there is split screen the game has to be render twice. IF you are okay with a lower framerate splitscreen multiplayer is more of a possibility.

More Complex Gameplay: Graphics aren't the only thing that can drag game performance down. Some games have complex calculations going on in the background that can put pressure on the game engine causing the game to slow down. This isn't very common but it happens (it happens in Skyrim's script engine so hence why gameplay mods can cost you some FPS).

More 'busy' gameplay: For people that like stuff on their screen, more enemies, more NPCs, more things going on on the screen, etc.

60 FPS is non-negotiable: For people who must have 60 (or higher) FPS no matter what.

As long as it's a locked 30fps I would take it for complex gameplay.

Splitscreen or complex gameplay.

Really though, in this day and age, 60fps should be mandatory, and a given. Developers need to start prioritizing framerate over pointless things like resolution.

Compelx gameplay would likely be slower, since it is more complex, and thus it could stand being 30 fps, Usually I would argue that 60 or Bust, but there ARE examples where 60 FPS is not paramount, and most of those games ARE more complex (a lot of RPGS, some RTS, Sims of different kinds and such).

So the ONLY one on the list that should be allowed to sacrifice FPS would be complex gameplay. Which by the way have gotten pretty freaking shallow lately.

After modding Skyrim for awhile, i got to the point where i discovered all my mods were actually gimmicks. No matter how hard i tried to find that balance, i just couldnt. Ever single mod i had seem to not fit together well after awhile. I then stripped that beast and played Skyrim naked. Good times, vanilla ftw!

Im all about dat gameplay.

generally im not fussed on framerate for most games. i do prefer a 60FPS for racing games and arena FPSs but other than that im not fussed.

im always a sucker for a few things though.

1) no loading screens (though framerate doesnt really have a bearing on this too much).

2) big worlds with a generous LOD scaling (as in things pop in and are animated etc. from futher away.) and well populated with stuff and fun things to do.

give me those 2 and i can forgive a lot.

@Kell_the_Gamer: My favorite mods was the one that let you skip the starting screen and the immersive HUD. I did enjoy the bug fixes though, but Skyrim would always take care of them in the official patches, just take little while longer.

Skryim will soon become absolute once Besthesda is finished with creation kit for fallout 4 and then fallout 4 will be dominating the modding scene, especially since modding wont be restricted to pc only anymore; however, I am still wondering how this is even going to work on console....

@GarGx1: Nice try:

1. Not all PCs are equal. Just because you have PC that doesn't mean you can play every game with highest settings at 144+ FPS

2. Some games have built in limitations. Skyrim can only use 3.1 gigs of your syetem RAM no matter if you have 4 gigs or 16 gigs, you can't have it all in Skyrim.

3. Some games have ridiculous requirements. Crysis 1 still has trouble on modern day PCs on max settings.

First off, he might have a high end pc, so running games at 60 fps shouldnt be a problem for him. Secondly, if you have a high end pc then maxing out crysis 1 shouldnt be a problem either, some people are even modding crysis to make it look even better. Regarding skyrim, so what, I can stil max the game out without any performance issues what so ever, if you install hundreds of script mods then it should be obvious that there will stability issues and crashing.

I normally don't mind 30fps, as long as it's locked in I'm fine with it. Unless it's a fighting game or something like God of War/DMC, but the last DMC was 30fps and I had zero issues with it.

Things like more interactive environments, physics based puzzles and abilities, smarter AI and encounters, etc. These all require a lot of processing power.

My favourite genres pretty much require 60fps. Platformers and fighting games really shouldn't drop below that.

If I traded fps for anything it would be more open, complex worlds to explore.

Sounds like your Topic title should have been "What would you trade 60 fps for?", but I get your point. I think my choice would be "busy gameplay"(though I would have named that category differently as well, seems like you are refering to graphics)...anyways, I'd rather have more stuff onscreen, not just objects but more special effects like particles, lighting etc. depending on the game.....a horror game for example, it would help make the game more immersive, I don't really need 60 fps for that.

60 fps is fantastic and in my experience it helps the most in action games. Games that require good hand-to-eye co-ordination and reflexes....fighters, shooters, racers for instance.

1. I have a high end PC. i7 4770k @ 4.3Ghz, Zotac 980ti AMP Extreme. Your thread is asking what we'd compromise on to get higher than 30fps. What does hitting 144fps have to do with anything? On that point I'm not entirely sure there are monitors available with a refresh rate greater than 144Hz, so where does the "+" come from?

I can max every modern game and run them at much higher frame rates than 30fps, even with super sampling. The only exception is Quantum Broken which is so badly coded for PC it barely hits 10fps on 1440p and Ultra settings (unless I'm running the windows video recorder constantly in the background!)

2. Skyrim is 5 years old, very few GPU cards carried more than 3Gb of RAM at that time and I can max it, modded, at 1440p and get well and truly more than a measly 30fps.

3. Lol, I can max Crysis 3 and get over 60fps, even heavily modded Crysis 1 presents no problems at all.

If I had to compromise to get a higher frame rate than 30, I would have upgraded long before that point.

Try again

@shrek: The point of the thread is what you would sacrifice 60fps for or what would make it worthwhile to tolerate 30fps. So, if you want advanced AI, this would definitely take up a lot of CPU resources. If the CPU is busy calculating AI, it has less resources to tell the GPU what to render. This can create a bottleneck and limit how many frames per second the GPU can render. Everything is connected and there are only so many resources to use.

Big, beautiful and complex worlds.

Considering console's hardware, i think that 1080p30 is the perfect balance for games like The Witcher 3, Batman AK, Just Cause 3, GTA5, etc...

IMO 60 fps is a must for racing games, 60 fps is preferable for fighting games and platformers. RPGs like Dark Souls and The Witcher are okay with a 30 fps update, no problem there. I'd prefer to have 60 fps update in shooters, Dying Light on the PS4 for example felt really bad, not gonna get the full game, ever.
