Poll What Zelda game has the best story? (99 votes)

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 3%
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening 3%
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 17%
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 28%
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker 15%
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 12%
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword 16%
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds 5%

Yes, story. Which Zelda game had the best story? Yes, I know that the games usually have rather simplistic and formulaic narratives, but each game brings a twist with it to the classic formula, and the stories are surprisingly endearing, like a fairy tale or a legend that grows with each retelling.

So: which Zelda game had the best story, according to you?

According to me:

  1. The Wind Waker
  2. Ocarina of Time
  3. Skyward Sword
  4. Majora's Mask
  5. Link's Awakening
  6. Twilight Princess
  7. A Link Between Worlds
  8. A Link to the Past

Skyward Sword! Im enjoying Wind Waker now, but havnt got into the story too much yet, it starts slow. I like how its letting me piece stuff together though.

My vote is for Twilight Princess. Story wise, I thought it was pretty good. But the real star of that game was the princess herself. You see character development, growth and a bond develop between her and Link.

I'd probably put it between The Wind Waker or Skyward Sword, with Skyward Sword taking it.

But this is one where I could probably change my mind depending on my mood and say Twilight Princess or Ocarina or something.

Majora's Mask was the only time I cared about a story in a Zelda game, because it actually handled its themes with some maturity and nuance.

Twilight Princess.

Despite the return to form in the final act, I was genuinely interested in the story/game long enough to not only finish it, but twice.

I'm gonna vote for Wind Waker on this one. The open seas made it a great storytelling, had that Pirate theme to go along with it, Link was a decedent hero made it awesome to add that, and the art direction made the story rich to tell in my opinion.

Zelda was never about story to me, not that it had much of story anyway. I love the dungeons the most, for example The Water Temple in Ocarina of time and Sky Temple in Twilight Princess is two of my favorites

Ocarina of Time, but WindWaker is a close second. And Twilight Princess gets credit for trying.

Majora's Mask. All the other ones are the same bullcrap about saving a princess you've never met and gods who are too incompetent to get rid of Ganon.

I guess TP, WW or ALBW...

But the fact that I'm considering any of those three for "best story" really just goes to show the poor quality of the list of games in this category.

Midna is one of Nintendo's best characters, imo. Truly made Twilight Princess something special. Nintendo did a good job at creating a mystery around the character which kept the player guessing, so to speak.

I'm going through WW at the moment, and mid game the story picks up a lot more.

It actually has quite a bit of story sprinkled in, then it starts linking in with the main Zelda theme mid game after you bring Hyrule back to life / unfreeze time. It mentions OOT and even Majora's Mask as this one being the direct sequel to those games also.

Even though I didn't love Skyward Sword, I did like how that one starts off pre OOT, and ends up later in the future. So you see the first Ganon iteration which leads to OOT, then the future fight is sometime possibly after all the other Zeldas. It's subtle, but the link's (no pun intended) are there in each game.

Majoras Mask storyline was incredible and emotional (such as the tree in the starting location before the town) especially if you did the sidequest to understand the references

I'd Probably vote Majora's Mask as my favorite, just for its darkness and how it really focused on the NPCs, leading to stuff like the Kafei and Anju quest.

I have enjoyed many Zelda stories though and actually appreciate their simplicity (as opposed to games that thinking cramming info down my throat = good story)

  • Link's Awakening ending gets me everytime.
  • Ocarina of Time doesn't really have one of my favorite stories, but it does have one of the best showdowns with Ganondorf, with how you climb his tower as the organ music plays, to the fights themselves. OoT also has my favorite credits sequence of any Zelda game as well.
  • Wind Waker for the stuff with sunken Hyrule, How the King ultimately decides to stay with his castle and ending his life, and having one of the more interesting interpretations of Ganondorf
  • Twilight Princess for Midna and her backstory, to when you finally say good bye to her.
  • Skyward Sword for putting more emphasis on Link and Zelda's relationship, and Groose's character development
  • A Link Between Worlds for its ending and the twists that happened during it

I think Twilight Princess is my favorite. Zelda's throne gets overtaken, the side/helper character is the most interesting, and all the village people at the beginning are unique and you actually feel a connection with.

@Blabadon: Wind Waker is the only Zelda I'm aware of that has a clear message enforced with motifs and metaphor throughout the game. It's simple by literary standards, but it's clealy there.

Either MM or WW. I give the edge to MM because of that atmosphere.

TP had the best character.

Skyward Sword and ALBW had its moments. I still haven't finished Link's Awakening.

But what about Link: The Faces of Evil, Zelda's Adventure, and The Wand of Gamelon? :P

Also, am I supposed to infer something from the absence of Minnish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Zelda II, and Triforce heroes (none of which I've played)?

Fine, I'll contribute: WW, OoT, TP, MM, in that order (and MM last only because I've never finished it).

Windwaker for me. I have a younger sister so the fact that she plays a fairly big role in the story sort of influenced that.

I voted for Twilight princess because your bromance with Midna is nice and the story stuff is mostly good, except for a couple really awkward moments.

But really, MM is the correct answer. As far as story stuff goes, it's far more interesting and subtle and dark than other Zelda games.

Overall best story has to be Wind Waker, followed by MM.
