It seems, that in the race to have the best graphics many games are forgoing the resource expensive split-screen function. Not to say that split-screen has been discontinued(look at Halo 3, 2 on campaign, 4 multiplayer online and off) but many other games including those I had really been looking forward too lack it. Left 4 Dead NEEDS split-screen, and I don't have high hopes that Halo Wars will either. If COD4 had it(to full extent), I would have given it GOTY.

Are there any good games announced at E3 that will have split-screen? I think Resistance 2 is one of them...

Motorstorm PR is going to have upto 4 player splitscreen, something the first one could have performed alot better with.

Well to be honest split screen was awesome back in the day, but now with the internet split screen isn't really needed as much. Not only that but it was annoying as hell considering you could not things that well. Its still fun with what games provide it, but overall I really couldn't stand it because of the view that you were restricted to.

yeah.

I think that split screen is still something people want, I like it. Nothing is better than splitscreen COD4 you against a friend. I am having some friends round this week to play Halo 3, COD4 and GRAW 2 spiltscreen. Its much better than playing online IMO seeing someones face when you stab their character in the bck on COD4, its the ultimate ownage.

It died along with parallax scrolling, games on tape cassettes and flares.

Yes, but newer televisions come in huge sizes. It's a lot of fun to have friends over and play split screen on a 60" tv

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift has 4 player split screen :D

I really hate this idea that online gaming is the sucessor to local multiplayer. It's a very different thing. Don't know how it is everywhere else, but where I'm from in the UK, at my age (21) no one I have ever met really plays online gaming with friends, they just do it with random people. If I ever want to play with friends, it usually involves some people going to someone's house and playing splitscreen or, someone bringing one console over to another house for system link 8 or 4 player games.

People got tired of bring cramped up in the corner of the screen and not being able to hardly see anything unless you had a big screen t.v. Seriously split screen always sucked, and it always will. Online is the way to go, hell I'd rather link up 8 systems together (for 8 player deathmatch, as an example) than ever use splitscreen again.

I know, this is really pissing me off this gen. Racing and shooting games MUST have splitscreen. I mean how the hell do racing games like Burnout and GRID not have splitscreen anymore? And then shooting games like COD doesnt have splitscreen either. Its like this gen, your online "buddies" you have never met are more important than real friends -_-

Sorry, but the only people who dont like splitscreen are those who have either no friends at all or just noone they know who wants to play certains games with them. Its not like you have to play splitscreen, if you feel like playing online u can have a full screen to yourself. But if you have freaking friends over you should be able to play with them...

Good point about playing with friends you know outside of online gaming, but in my case me and all of my friends have Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, so therefore we stay connected and able to play games against and with each other. Which is good since we all now live in different parts of town, and some of us have kids and careers now so we don't always have the time to go over to each other's houses.

Yup, people who hate splitscreen have no friends. I guess most PC Gamers have no friends either since none of their shooters have ever had split-screen (as far as I can recall). If I wanted to be a jerk like you, I could fire back saying people who like splitscreen are those who are too poor to afford online, but I won't do that. I know it's hard to believe but not everyone likes splitscreen, and attacking me for my opinion on the subject, gives off that you are probably better off sticking with online since with an attitude like that you likely have no friends.

I have a roommate and one kick ass 1080p flat screen so this trend of not producing games with split-screen functionality sucks....2 people 1 tv 1 xbox = way to much sideline time and not enough game time

DAMN THE MAN SAVE SPIT-SCREEN GAMING... I wish Merc 2 had it....then i would be playing right now insted of venting on the forums

I think alot of it has to do with many games nowadays being forced to render two individual views instead of one. Graphics have gone so far most current consoles don't have enoughn RAM to keep up with it unless the Dev behid it is really good, a la GeOW, Resistance, Rainbow Six Vegas, Halo 3 have done great jobs. I'm not saying Infinity Ward or something isn't a great Dev, I just think that most don't want to go thorugh the possibility of either downsizing their textures or recoding some of the game to accomidate it.

Splitscreen Online is my favorite though, Warhawk and Halo 3 were EXCELLENT examples of both of these. I wish both were multiplat, I hate having to use my friends 360 for Halo and mine for Warhawk. This PS3 gets heavy hauling it back and forth >_<

Splitscreen is more important to me because I have 2 boys that like to play games with me and I have friends. So for me online is a last resort.

Beats me. It's one of the critical distinguishing features of console gaming, and I get worried every time I see a new title that doesn't have it. I really don't want to see multiplayer go all-online - I want to play against my friends, not random people online.

Split-screen kind of started going out when graphics got MUCH better. I mean, yes, hardware also scales, but it is much harder to keep up constant framerates even just by adding one extra screen.

Plus, with online gaming becoming the huge selling point nowadays, it's much easier to make a game look good and have good online play instead of traditional split screen play.

Warhawk and Halo 2/3 are the only two games I have found that have 4 player splitscreen multiplayer online... This is one of the most number one factors I look for nowadays as it's jsut so much fun.

If ANYONE knows ofany games that have this feature... please EMAIL/PM me!!! And I hope you know what I'm talking about!

There's nothing like having your friends right there with you, even if they do drink all of my good beer and only have Lite around when I visit them:evil:.

Online is great for those friends you don't get to see in person, but it's a poor substitute for the real thing.

Online gaming has killed split screen which really sucks to be honest. When I was younger me and 3 friends would sit in my basement playing Goldeneye on my N64 for hours on end having a blast, yelling and laughing at eachother and doing the most pointless stuff like putting prox mines in the bathroom and setting them off as soon as someone spawned there. Never get that same kind of enjoyment now to be honest.

I don't get it either. With systesm being built with giant HDTVs in mind, we should be seeing MORE spilt screen...not less.
