Detailed cars or detailed track? I vote tracks because they make up most of what you see. Cars only need to be detailed to a point where they look good and compromising the tracks for the sake of the cars makes for a visually unappealing game, imo. For example, GRID, DiRT 2, NFS Shift, and TDU2 don't have the most detailed cars, but they still look great and and they have incredible tracks because a good chunk of the resources put towards the lighting, shadows, volumetrics, textures and geometry of the tracks.

So much emphasis is put on the cars in current racers, but when we're racing most of the time we only see the track, so yeah track detail is much more important.

Not to say cars shouldnt look great, but a great looking car is the least important aspect of racing.

Your going to spend MUCH more time looking at the cars, it's makes much more sense to have really good looking cars.

good damage modeling is a must.

I haven't played any racers in a long time to really know what I prefer. but tracks seem like the most logical thing to emphasize.

Not if you're in first person view and in first place :P No matter the situation, you'll always be looking at the tracks.

The cars. You're moving through the tracks too fast to really take notice of the graphics, but you spend a lot of time admiring the cars.

Neither... The most important thing in a racer is deciding when to through the green shell and hoping you don't hit yourself with it.

both really, if the graphics aren't balanced between the cars and tracks then the game simply looks unreal or fakey

but graphical consistency isn't really something beholden to racing games, it matters to most games, ie: Mass Effect 1 had some pretty poor consistency because face/head models were highly detailed but the bodies had really low res textures, it was always noticeable even if the faces were more important

imo DIRT 2 is the best looking racing game atm

Accurate physics. Without that, who cares what the cars or tracks look like?

course design is the most important, and part of that is how the cars move on it and how the different options are balanced

If the game play was poor, then you wouldn't even be playing the game in the first place. I don't see why that would need to be mentioned.

to be fair to you tc, I would say environments are more important than cars. However, it doesn't have to stand up to the scrutiny of a game where you could get out of the car and walk up to the environments and check them out. Style choices are more important than flawless rendering of environments

If the graphics were bad but the gameplay was good. You would still play it. So I don't see why car models or environments would need to be mentioned.

Actually, I wouldn't since I could be playing a game that does well with both instead.

The detail of the cars is more important, imo.

I like to race with cars I actually own, so when the little details aren't right, it's quite annoying. Like Forza 3, the interior of the '79 Z28 is spot on, all the way down to the clock in the instrument cluster, but the Z28 striping is a wrong shade of blue. It's bothersome because I know it just isn't right. Same thing applies to Chrysler 300, and Pontiac Firebird/Trans Am/Formula, I know these cars, so they better get them right!

I've never been to any tracks in any racing games, so if the details aren't accurate I wouldn't know, so I don't care. With the cars, I do.

Here's how the results will break down.

GT fans will say car details are more important.
Forza fans will say track details are more important.

This is System Wars :)

I voted tracks, but only because a racing game is only as fun as its tracks. The more exciting the tracks, the more exciting the game.

Not neccesarily, the track details arent that spectacular in Forza 3, and i'm definitely a bigger Forza fan than GT. Yet i still think tracks are more important, not to say i dont like great looking cars, in fact i'd say my time creating liveries isnt far behind my time spent racing in F3.

Both.

Making one significantly better than the other only accentuates the flaws in whichever one looks worse.
