I have a Wii, and for the most part I believe it gets a really bad rap. However, the disappointment is warranted to some degree. The console hasn't lived up to its true potential, and developers refuse to accept that the industry is changing and therefore look at the Wii as a dumping ground for crap to make a quick buck.
I mean, if the console is the easiest to develop for (due to familiar GC hardware) and the cheapest, it should be a no brainer that developers truly support it. Instead, they aren't. They dump licensed crap for 5 year olds, the dump minigame collections that are terrible. And what little 3rd party games are decent...they are just PS2 ports of old games nobody really cares about any more.
Even if the complainers are right, and the Wii is just a GC with motion controls, then why the hell haven't we seen games that look as good as Rogue Squadron, RE4 (other than the RE4 port of course) or even Viewtiful Joe? Why are the graphics for third party titles mostly terrible, or just PS2 ports. Why aren't more RE4 type games coming out?
And when Metroid Prime 3 proved the console could be amazing for FPS, why aren't developers MAKING FPS? Why aren't developers making some bloody games that are worth playing? The WIi is where the money is. Instead they just use it to rip people off and make a quick buck to subsidize their expensive games on other consoles that probably won't make as much money anyway.
It is really sad. I enjoy the Wii and have been a strong supporter. But I'm quickly becoming depressed at the crap coming out. No More Heroes was a nice change of pace, but even the graphics for that game were kind of bad IMHO. People always hate to hear the "lazy devs" comment, but clearly the Wii shows that most third pary devs are so stubbornly stuck in their ways that the success of the Wii is completely ignored. They would rather make SPlinter Cell 13, or spend a billion dollars making some FPS that will probably flop anyway, instead of making a great, innovative game on a cheaper console with the largest user base world wide.
Somebody posted a great article last week about developers self-destructing on the Wii and why. I think that is something everyone should read...especially third party developers themselves. Because the fact that they are pretty much ignoring the biggest success story in possibly console history says a lot about the state of the industry today.
