The most atmospheric games I've ever played (well, at least as of late) are essentially these:
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Fallout 3
Shadow of the Colossus
I know, Shadow of the Colossus isn't really considered this gen, but I played it for the first time in 2010, and it is getting a remake next month. Besides, excluding it in a thread like this is borderline criminal. It's like listing the most bad*ss predators on earth only to exclude the Siberian tiger. Yeah.
For me, for a game to be considered atmospheric, it has to have more going for it than just a certain atmosphere within the game locales.
It's hard to explain, but what I'm referring to are games that leave a very distinct feeling, even after I've put the game down - games that invoke those feelings whenever I think back at the time in my life when I first played them.
