No, it does not have to be a horror game, but it can be as well of course. :P I just want to know what you all think is some of the most atmospheric games from this gen. For me it would be Alan Wake, Bioshock, L.A. Noire, Dead Space 1 and 2, Condemned 1 and 2, and RDR. (even though I hated that game) These are in no particular oder.

Bioshock

Though it doesn't even come close to Zelda MM in that aspect.

For me Alan Wake was almost magical. Also loved the Halo Reach campaign, it was delicious.

FoolwithaLancer

I honestly don't think LoZ MM had much of an atmosphere at all, but I think this gen beats previous gens with being able to pull of better atmospheres in games.

STALKER series is even better in that regard. At least the first and third are.

I should point out, I played Deus Ex: Human Revolution today, and I didn't find it very atmospheric at all. I guess I'm weird since most people did.

  • World of Warcraft
  • Dead Space
  • Bioshock
  • Mass Effect
  • Halo 3: ODST
  • Left 4 Dead
  • Minecraft
  • Monster Hunter Tri

No particular order, though they are in the order I thought of them in, so I guess those at the top have a more memorable, stand-out atmosphere. It also doesn't mean I enjoyed the game more either (Dead Space & Bioshock would place quite low on that list if that was the case). I've never been more immersed in a game world as I have with WoW, so I'd say that takes first place for me.

it depends on how you define atmosphere. for example, bad company 2 is as war-like as you can get (at least until october). it really feels like you're in the middle of a war. another example would be the just released deus ex, which is one of the most immersive games i've ever played. the story and characters are incredibly well written, and there are so many details scattered that shows this isn't just a mission scenario, this is a real place where real people used to go to work until they were taken hostage.

Bioshock. Obvious

Metro 2033. Obvious

Grand Theft Auto 4. Driving around town with Roman in Liberty city with the great soundtrack and the bumbling lively city was truly awesome

Modern Warfare 1. That Ghillie mission was tense!

Modern Warfare 2. No Russian was a breakthrough for gaming, and the music in MW2 rocked likehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tSczoDAM0w

Oh yeah Dead Space was very awesome with 5.1 Surrond sound. Some great sound design

The most atmospheric games I've ever played (well, at least as of late) are essentially these:

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Fallout 3

Shadow of the Colossus

I know, Shadow of the Colossus isn't really considered this gen, but I played it for the first time in 2010, and it is getting a remake next month. Besides, excluding it in a thread like this is borderline criminal. It's like listing the most bad*ss predators on earth only to exclude the Siberian tiger. Yeah.

For me, for a game to be considered atmospheric, it has to have more going for it than just a certain atmosphere within the game locales.

It's hard to explain, but what I'm referring to are games that leave a very distinct feeling, even after I've put the game down - games that invoke those feelings whenever I think back at the time in my life when I first played them.
