I never really played either..
So what makes them good?
Why should i be interested in playing them?

well the games are incredibly different from one another so here ill give you the gist on both
harvest moon is a game about self defined goals. the game obviously has an end goal of some kind but how you get there and what happens to you along the way is completely up to you. many games can claim this. harvest moon shuts its little mouth and delievers. this becomes really addictive if you let it. you give real effort getting to those ends and from there you can feel free to go all out and experiment with things u didnt do up till now.
the game makes you appreciate hard work. it really does, if anyone who wants to play harvest moon they need to start at the origional, n64 or gba series installments and just take it in. its a game about working hard and getting to very real places doing it. the creator wanted to emulate a stereotypical rural lifestyle 100% and even he agrees with me that farming simulators and farmville are not the future. it already happened on the GBA and the rest is an afterthough cashing in on that beautiful.. beautiful game
animal crossing. is more about being a fashionable trendy. its primarily why its pretty popular amongst females (though not exclusively). its one of those games your ashamed to be playing and enjoying when your friends find out. its more about gathering shtuff, arranging shtuf in your square of land + house. and then rinsing and repeating.
i dont see the appeal of animal crossing tbh. viva pinata was easily 15% more of a gaming experience, and it looks visually purty by todays standards too despite being released at the very start of this console gen.
even peanut butter agrees with me. friends of mineral town is the best HM games in existance today

Its a toss up between Animal crossing: Wild World and Harvest Moon 64. Both awesome games... But I really dont like the rest of either series. Especially Harvest Moon.
Couldn't tell ya. They both remind me of those crappy Facebook games like Farmville that people love so much. I'll never understand it, so I don't try to.
I fail to see how Viva Pinata has anything to do with AC, I see the comparison to HM, since you have a garden, but I don't see why you mentioned it in regard to AC.well the games are incredibly different from one another so here ill give you the gist on both

I owned Harvest Moon on the Snes.
It was awesome. You could even get married and stuff.
Fun fun.Sagem28
You could ? lol.
No time for that though, gotta attend to my pigs and potatoes.
Let the children help out lol. These two series have nailed the pacing in terms of rewards schedules and reward anticipation. Almost every action you do in either of these games gets you closer to some kind of item or monetary reward. They are both really effective at pulling on those feel-good, "keep doing that!" levers on the brain, to put it simply.
The games give you enough freedom to personalize the experience (by modifying and designing your own village, farm, family, and so on) and strategize what you will do with your limited resources and time, while giving enough structure to keep it from being a directionless sandbox game.
So while thinking that watering crops every day seems like a chore (and it sometimes is), there's an effective pay-off system built in. Every day you water your crop, thats one day closer to harvest. One more harvest and be paid enough money for a new cow. With a new cow and you'll get more money to buy more crops for the next season and to enter the cow festival in two seasons. This is just one example, but each day brings new immediate rewards and opportunities to gain far-off rewards down the line, which builds up anticipation. In Harvest Moon, the days are short, so you keep telling yourself "Tomorrow the tomatos will be ready to harvest, just one more day!" and then at the end of that day "Tomorrow's the flower festival! Just one more day!"
Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing are a bit different since one is based on a in-game clock and the other is based on real time, but they both take the same idea of rewards schedules and make it work in their own systems. And in the end, both games wrap up the experience in a charming exterior, which sells the whole thing. This is one reason why I believe recent Harvest Moon games have been mostly garbage; they still have that addictive gameplay but the presentation just seems to generic and without character.
It's one of those series that you gotta try out for yourself.
For me, i like AC simply because it's so different than what i normally play everyday. S'one of those of game i like to play 1h or 2 before i sleep, just to relax.
This also I like that the new Animal Crossing for the 3DS you are the Mayor so there is more to do and you get to schedule your town around your real-life schedule. It's one of those series that you gotta try out for yourself.
