Confusing thread title, I thought you meant 'platforming genre'
Ninja Gaiden for me, I've only played the second and it was very challenging.
The hardest I've played:
1) Beatmania IIDX on "Another"
2) Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition on "Dante Must Die"
3) DJ MAX Portable 2 on "MX 8B"
4) Ikaruga
I'm not sure there is any game objectively more difficult than the Bemani rhythm game series. Or even close. Even Guitar Hero's hardest song cries in the face of 14 Another tracks.
Mushihime-sama Futari, that game is brutal. Only played it once though, and then I didnt come that far into the game. After seeing the boss in that link I dont think I want to come further :(

lol @ the first comment.
"If you can beat this with out dying.... you can go outside and dodge rain."
Has to be Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Famicom Disk or Ghouls 'n Goblins for the arcade.
Or that cat Mario thing, but I haven't managed to make it work.
I have no idea why everyone is saying Super Mario Bros. 2 is hard I always thought it was easier then Super Mario U.S.A.Has to be Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Famicom Disk or Ghouls 'n Goblins for the arcade.

Unless it is easier in All-Stars then it was in the Japan.

Yes, it's much easier in All-Stars.
Probably Ikaruga on the Gamecube.
Though I'm getting better at it! I got to level three or so by myself! :D

good suggestion - ultra mode and black label god mode are both very difficult. I don't see why you didn't start in novice mode though as that's extremely easy to 1 credit clear. At the moment I've been trying to get Maniac mode 1 credit cleared before I attempt that on ultra/god mode.
altho the most difficult thing about that game is the boss that you linked, whereas the rest of the boss's spreads before that one aren't nearly as difficult as other cave developed games. In comparison to a few other games, the level design in futari doesn't really compare. That would be the perfect suggestion for hardest boss, but for overall hardest game I'd go with dodonpachi dai-ou-jou white label which is pretty insanely difficult. ketsui kizuna jigoku tachi (the boss in this vid is at 5:20) is another. Once you play those, mushihime-sama futari ver. 1.5 feels like a cake walk with the exception of the final boss. The additional final boss found in black label god mode in futari makes the final boss even MORE difficult. I've been building up my collection of Cave developed shmups lately and those 2 give me way more problems than any other one I've played.
I've yet to play it, but I've also heard that muchi muchi pork/pink sweets are both incredibly hard as well.
Probably Ikaruga on the Gamecube.

if you're playing for survival, the game really isn't too difficult to 1 credit clear (I've done it multiple times on the dreamcast/gamecube versions). Stage 3 is the hardest stage to clear without dying, but stage 4 and 5 aren't too bad. Playing it as a puzzle game on the other hand makes everything three times as difficult. You should really check out radiant silvergun due to it being very difficult in comparison to ikaruga.
Touhou I guess? I think that qualifies here?Ace6301
which one's do you find the most difficult? subterranean animism is pretty nuts but I feel those games would be SO much more difficult if I actually had a stick to use with my PC instead of just using a mouse. I've only played 4 touhou titles but for the most part they were pretty hard.

11 and 12 are probably the most difficult in my mind. I only ever use keyboard and I really need a new one so that's part of it too lol. I'm certainly not good enough to clear without continues to get the extra stages.[QUOTE="Some-Mist"][QUOTE="Ace6301"]Touhou I guess? I think that qualifies here?Ace6301

Altho I respect the difficulty, I'm not a huge fan of the franchise as it's hard for me to feel content with my performance in those games.

Good suggestion, but I wasnt fair on it as my experience was way too brief, I merely tried it once and since I always pick the hard difficulties, I foolishly went for that.
Thanks again, and I will probably give it another chance thanks to you :)
Most 8 bit and 16 bit titles, I don't think I have ever played a 3D Japanese title that made split hairs.
