What's the longest time you've spent on a boss fight or difficult scenario/section?

For me I'm not sure. I usually get stressed when I can't advance in a game. So, I'm interested to see how long you guys spend on a difficult boss or section. Is it hours? or even days? I play all my games on normal difficulty, and for you guys who play on the hardest difficulty I imagine you spend a long time on boss fights or tough sections?

Of any game, i dunno. But the latest would be some sections of the game and slayer gates on Nightmare in Doom Eternal. Hoping TLOU2 on Survival will be difficult.

I dunno. Probably some bullshit in FFX. I rarely enjoy boss fights, and the longer they are the more I get pissed off. Or God - not long but awful: the original Deus Ex HR bosses that were borked and designed around specific play styles that you may not have leveled.

Give me challenge through intelligent, varied, and numerous enemies in the game world any day over bullet sponges that exist just for saturday morning cartoon exposition

I still can't beat the amazing difficulty level AI at renegade/othello on 51 Worldwide Games. Have tried numerous times, and I just can't manage it.

The original Call Of Duty 4s Heat mission on Veteran took me and my brother like 3 days to beat. Literally hours just to reach each checkpoint. Halo 3 on legendary had similar moments. Took us days to beat certain missions.

Clearing the Great Crystal in FF12 without a guide took me like 6 hours. One of my favorite gaming moments.

Boss wise? Me and my brother fought an elite hunt in FF12 for like 12 hours before dying after running out of megaelixers. I couldn't stop laughing. The tank boss in Ninja Gaiden Black destroyed me. As did the fight against the two Pursuers in Drangleic Castle in Dark Souls 2, which was another one of my favorite gaming moments

FF8 - Omega Weapon. Took me many tries until i got lucky with 3 Lion Hearts. Very easy to kill on my next playthrough though.

FFX - The Dark Aeons. Had to cheat with Yojimbos overdrive with the hard ones.

Dark Souls - that optional fire demon boss. Managed to beat it solo.

God of War - Valkyrie Sigrun. Took me many attempts

God of War Ascension's elevator section. It was difficult because I didn't expect it and went in totally unprepared. The checkpoint that I had saved always took me back to a point where I had even fewer resources so it took way more tries than it should have.

I wish I could be like you. Spending hours in a scenario becomes one of your favourite moments, while I'm the complete opposite. It really makes me anxious and if I do overcome it I'm just glad it's over :(

Sister Friedge from Dark Souls 3 took me days of tries (usually 2 or 3 each day, i didn't push that much), but still she took me a while.

However and with that being said ... Midir takes the cake, that Dragon is a huge pain ... excellent fight and no doubt the hardest enemy in any Souls game (not including Bloodborne).

I'm surprised though since you have an Abel avatar, so I'm guessing you're a fan of fighting games? They're the hardest genre of games out there. Getting bashed up by flowchart Kens and yolo Rashids is the only time I've ever raged at a videogame. And I mean throwing a $150 fightstick across the room type of rage lol

The final chapter of GTA 4. I suck at flying and to get to the flying part that I was struggling with took like 15-20 minutes because before GTA 5 there were no checkpoints in the missions.

Most of my gaming struggles were in the 8-16 bit days, just an era of console and arcade games designed to destroy you. But I suppose that was the norm.

For more "modern" games.

Alma in Ninja Gaiden (vanilla) took me an excessive amount of tries the first time. ON NORMAL lol. I'm no stranger to difficult games, but that was the only time I almost gave up on a game I liked. I went at that shit for days, wouldn't be surprised if it was in the ball park of 100 attempts. In hindsight not even sure why I struggled so much, eventually got to where I could beat her on Master Ninja without taking a hit. But that one always sticks with me.

The entirety of Ninja Gaiden 2 on Master Ninja is an exercise in insanity, I'll never do that again. About a 15hr game, but took me about a month just grinding down one section at a time. Might be the hardest game I've played.

More recent years, nothing like that. Had the occasional struggle in Demons Souls (my first Souls game) or Nioh, but nothing that stands out. Suppose Father Gascoigne took me to school more than I'd like to admit, but nothing too crazy.

Most recently, some of the Doom Eternal slayer gates on Nightmare. One in particular took me dozens of tries. They're about equal to Ninja Gaiden 2s tests of valor on normal mode. Very challenging, but within reason.

Outside that, just challenge modes in games that you're supposed to grind at. Angel Slayer, Witch Trials, Bloody Palace, Mission Modes, etc. but they're like that by design unless you're one of those gaming mutants.

I may have spent like 10 hours (or that's what it felt like) on the double boss in Dark Souls. Smough & Ornstein. ****ing bullshit. I'm still upset about that bossfight.

I also spent some time on Genichiro Ashina in Sekiro. HOWEVER I really enjoyed fighting him. It felt so cool. That dude was cool. He used everything. He has an answer for most strategies. That was a beautiful boss fight. I felt cool while fighting him and while being beaten by him.

hmm good question...

possibly the Capra Demon in Dark Souls. I remember just having to try that one a million times before getting it.

I'm a bit ashamed to admit that i'm not that tenacious in games and tend to just stop playing a game or lower the difficulty if I get really stuck on a particular section because I just start raging. I kinda learned to stay cool when playing through Souls games since failure is just part of the process but in general I have limited patience for replaying the same sections over and over.

Probably when I was much younger and was both bad at games and had less of them to play I spent ages on certain levels... I recall bashing my head against the wall for some Medal of Honor Allied Assault missions for ages for example.

I don't know why, and maybe it's just me, but it took me forever to beat the last boss in DOOM 2016. Maybe I just wasn't on point that day, but it was making me enjoy the game far less.

Final Fantasy X - beating Penance took well over 100 hours of grinding. I think I finished the game around 170 hours. Didn't beat Penance until I was like 300 hours in.

then there's this, which I technically never did myself, I had a friend do it for me...

Like many have said here... 1st time I ever fought Yiazmat in FF12 took my about a week because he kept on casting Renew. The only boss I ever fought that had a save point in the arena.

I dont know what changed... but in the remaster FF12 TZA I smoked him in about an hour.

lol yeah those fightsticks were not cheap and I've been through my fair share of them due to raging :(

I guess you're right about fighting games being the hardest genre of games. I've never thought of it like that. Maybe I should just try one of these tough games and see how it goes. Games like Nioh, Ninja Gaiden, Dark Souls do interest me but I fear what they might do to my sanity :( Maybe one day :)

Probably some Sekiro boss. I sucked ungodly ass at that game. Because of my years of Dark Souls experience I kept playing it wrong and it was just hours on top of hours of my butt getting whooped. Most frustrated I've ever been playing a Fromsoft game.

I'd say the name of the boss I think I spent the most time on but I don't know how to spoiler tag here.

That's a tough call because often times if I spent a lot of 'time' on a boss it's probably because I put down the game and carried on with life, rather than actually spending all that time trying to defeat it.

Metroid Prime 2 comes to mind. Quadraxis for the first time playing it was stressful for me because during the battle Samus' health is at a constant drain because of the atmosphere.

Quadraxis was more of a puzzle-oriented boss that frustrated me, I ended up putting the game down for over a year. When I finally picked the game up again I beat Quadraxis with far greater ease when I learned the puzzle nature of the fight.

The Capra Demon was definitely a cheese boss to unsuspecting players, but honestly the Capra Demon is very easy once you learn to uncheese it.

No Dark Souls boss is worse than the Bed of Chaos. Now that one is just stupid and I wonder how such a boss even got the green light to be in the final game.

Spent masses of time, some cases 40-50 minutes running around like a headless chicken in Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, thanks to poor design.

Contrary to what is chirped, Tomb Raider 1, 2, 3 and 4 are very differentially designed games with a downward spiral in quality as it became annually rushed put the door to capitalize on it's monumental success.

Th problem with 4, it links multiple maps together removing the linear forward momentum of previous entries with the player doing huge leaps of backtracking with no clear direction, key items and basic textures not highlighted properly, and some times basic stuff like activating items to progress not registering unless the player is standing in a specific spot, the entire game ends up being a giant cluster of frustration. By far the worst entry in the series.

Thankfully can use the internet now, but without a guide, torture.

Driver 1: The driving test (1st level) was pretty difficult. Took awhile to beat that jsut to get to the actual missions.

Persona 3 FES: The final boss was ridiculously long (1st play through).

Sonic 3: The barrel of doom from Carnival Night Zone Act 2.

F-Zero GX: almost every mission before I quit the story mode lol.

Mostly JRPG and most of them is on PS2.

  • Elizabeth - Persona 3. The battle is 1v1 against the velvet room attendant and you cannot bring anyone else and u cannot use armageddon fusion skill or she will do a 9999 damage megidolaon. And if u somehow survive she will cast another till u die and there is a 50 turn restriction. Very memorable fight personally and I spend days then stuck against her. Going to gamefaqs forum and strategizing with others on what persona to bring, what skill should be on that persona and how to actually beat her, man the nostalgia!
  • Demi Fiend - SMT Digital Devil Saga. Bullshit fight that you actually have to use a guide to win. Spent days or even a whole week if I remember correctly figuring out the boss pattern and it turns out its actually our pattern that affects boss choice of attack. when I did it I quit gaming for a month cause my teenage brain cannot handle the bullshit. Amazing game though really deserve a play if ur a JRPG fan. Truly amazing story that will really blows ur mind.

For non JRPG its mostly souls.

  • Flamelurker - Demons Souls. Flamelurker is just horrible, worst, hardest, baddest souls boss I ever fought. Fk that guy and everything in that tunnel leading to the guy. Cannot wait for the remake! The boss room is really cool though.
  • Hino Enma - Nioh. Quite pitiful really but I stuck here for a while that I searched for a cheese to win. Really not proud of it but please don't ever nerf sloth talisman!
  • Blood Starved Beast - Bloodborne. For most the moment the game clicked was during the father gascoigne fight but for me it clicked during this fight. I got stuck here against the BSB for days that I took a day off from gaming, cool my head and enjoy time with family, went out together, came back and beat the beast. Suddenly everything is clear to me what From Soft wanted to do with Bloodborne and I had such an amazing time afterwards.
