This thread is helpful for people who wanna buy consoles, but are weary about buy and owning a certain console. It would help if you also include handheld, just let use know youre experience with the console, and how it broke down on you.

I would say the most defective console in video game history for me is... the PSX aka PS1

I remember saving out my allowance to buy the console. In a few months time, the ps1 had problems reading my disks.
I basically thought it was the end of the system for me, till i heard stories of people having the same problems. I then heard
that there was a way to get the ps1 to read disks again, which was by putting it upside down. I manage to do this for another year, till that method didnt work anymore, to where i then started trying my own methods, basically taking it appart and putting things underneath the console, to lift up the Cd reader, that was basically the problem. After a time of play the Cd reader get loose and sink into the system, causing it not to properly read disks anymore. To solve that problem one would basically have to put the console upside down and it would read disks again, but after a while that didnt work anymore.

my worst experience ever with a console was with the PSX. some years later i then had a similar experience with the PS2.

In your honest opinion.. what is the most defective console in the history of consoles? (handhelds included)

The worst experience I ever had was DRE with my PS2.

However, that's just personal experience, I'm sure there was some shocking no name console from the 90s or 80s which takes the cake.

i'll have to go with the 360 based on personal experience and the numerous complaints you hear. it really is a shoddy piece of kit and the only of the many consoles i've owned that i don't feel confident in getting many years out of.

The only console that has given me trouble is the PS2, so I'll go with that.

I love my 360 and it's games, but I gotta admit that the hardware itself is pretty unreliable. Lucky MS gave everyone an extended warranty, I needed it.

with the NES it had the annoying habit of the player needing to blow into the game cartridges almost constantly just before playing a game otherwise it wouldnt work- or just as you're about to beat the final boss- the game crashes because u havent blown into the cartridge enough.

for cows who dont believe the PS2 had problems

Technical problems

Owners of early PS2 models purchased from launch until spring 2003 often reported faulty optical drives in their consoles. The earliest drives suffered from a constantly misaligning laser lens, but later defects were the result of a shift in voltage to the laser. The first problem was easily remedied by opening the console's casing and tweaking a cog that controlled the lens' distance from the disc. However, this action voided the console's warranty. The second problem could be fixed by using an oscillator. After many consoles had broken down, a ****action lawsuit was filed against Sony. Sony agreed to provide free repair or replacement for the faulty consoles and continued to do so until February 2005.[17]

Another problem that could cause a disc read error is wear on the coupling in the head assembly to the worm gear that moves the laser. A symptom of this is a loud repetitive clicking sound. However, this problem rarely occurs on newer consoles.

true my trusty old NES kept going for years- just it was kinda annoying having to blow into the game cartridges all the time- imagine the fanboy ownage if u had to do it today for the PS3 or X360- it would be funny.

i currently own a X360 & had the red lights of doom but its still working- probably down to luck. from what i hear the Ps2 had quite a few problems- but these days a lot of ppl on xbox live have had problems with the x360- there's definitley a fault that ends the life of the console early...

I've never had one issue with my PS2 and my friend hasn't had any problems with his 360 either. Australia gets their consoles a little later than the US though, so I dunno, maybe they have more time to sort out the hardware issues or something.

"Most Defective" is hard to define. If you're going for the most cases of malfunction it is most obviously the ps2.

But, you could say virtual boy maybe. That gave people headaches while playing it for extended periods. Luckily no one played virtual boy for extended periods.

I had a GameBoy, NES, Gamegear, Sega Master System, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, PS1, Dreamcast and a PS2.

Only the PS1 had problems. I was an early adopter and the Laser Unit was crap after one year (not only mine had that problem...).

Today? I don't know. From the 7gen consoles I would say X360...

Most Defective Console of all time....?  NES by far.

All you have to do to fix DRE's on the PS2 is clean the damn laser...that's what me and 3 of my friends did all the same day and we all fixed our PS2's.  With NES, everyone I knew had to blow their games for about 45 minutes and stick cardboard or jam another game into the damn space to get the game to work.  Awww, I remember when everyone would be like "GET AWAY, ONLY I KNOW HOW TO FIX MY NES, NO, NO, UR DOING IT ALL WRONG!"

i'm convinced its a business strategy by MS, they took a look at the ps2 lifetime sales, figured it was a surefire way to bump up the sales figures a hell of a lot. i mean there must be around 70m ps2 owners but 100m+ sales due to replacements and newer models etc

the Sega Master System! It still works, but I have to put the cartridges into the machine in a very specific way to get it to read them.

Any console that used cartridges. Easy...

Nothing like having the black screen of death and trying to fix it by pulling the cartridge in and out 50+ times. Plus the constant cleaning of the pins...

Thank the lord for discs! Even though cartridges are more durable.

Virtual Boy - it could cause permanent eye damage to children under seven who played on the console... oops to all the kids trying it out at Toys R Us who didn't get to read the warning in the box...

NES
- how many working NES units do you see? Blowing on cartridges was invented *because* the NES connector was so finnicky.

Atari 5200 - watch the Angry Videogame Nerd videos on this one, he's not far off *at all* - it was a giant, failure-prone console from the depths of insanity.

I find it humerous to see how angry the Nintendo fanboys get at the PS1 and PS2. Y'know, Nintendo was the one who betrayed Sony... the dominance of the PS1 and PS2 was simply karma. Disc drive failures were a bit high on the early PS2s due to plastic trays, but the PS1 was not an unreliable system.

what the hell, hypocrite much? you just brought up the nes saying you have to blow in the cartridges, when there are loads of people who have to turn their ps1 upside down to work, and many people have had more than 3 ps2 units. whether u like it or not the poster has a point, ps1 was definitely more reliable than the ps2 though.

there was a 31% defect with PS2 at launch. Sony fixed it within within 14 months or so.

Im not sure what the percentage are on the 360 but I believe its higher, but I have no way of confirming this bacause no statements have been released by MS...

"We asked Game, one of the largest console retailers in the UK. "That's not information we're able to give out. It's commercially sensitive," it said. As for Microsoft, in the early days after the console's 2005 launch it claimed that failure rates were no higher than an industry average of between 3% and 5%. That now seems wildly optimistic.

Last month, its vice-president of entertainment, Peter Moore, refused to answer the question, telling the Mercury News: "I can't comment on failure rates." According to Moore, if someone has a faulty console they should worry about the customer service."

So the apparant 3-5% failure rate wasent contex sensative

Ahh damn double standards.

You don't know Lilac, that's all, anything posted is to bring Nintendo up and Sony down. The NES was far less reliable than the PS1 and PS2, while there were faulty PS2s at launch (disc trays that were doomed to failure), the NES cartridge connector was never replaced except in much later verisons that are extremely uncommon. Replacing the pin connector is par for course for NES collectors, and the market for NES units has been completely replaced by third party *consoles* simply because the maintenance on NES units has become ridiculous.

Oh!  someone I can relate to.  I guess that was the case with all those old cartridge consoles.  It happened with the SNES and the Sega Dreamcast.  64 was alright though.

Ok, in terms of overall defec consoles, probably the PS2 if your looking at it's lifetime defecs.  I had to replace one after a couple years, of course I didn't use it as a DVD player so that might have helped its longevity.  PS1 I also had problems, first my friend dropped it on the foor and then my second one I had to turn upside down to use (never had to replace it though).  The NES I also had to blow or move the cart. around until it started up.

Now if you want to guess by the most defective units by percent, I would have to go with the X360.  For a console that only has roughly 10 mill units, it has to be the most defective console ever.  I've had one break and it wasn't pretty.  Not only does the hardware break but it also literally eats (or has a chance to) your game disks.  Show me another console that has done that......the most distrubing is the fact that's it should be correctable but it seems they refuse to correct it and opt to keep sending you used units instead, very sad indeed.  Unitl they admit what the defective rate is I'm going to have to say it's the X360.  Even fanboys of Xbox admit this is the biggest unreliable system they've ever seen......the bad part is it is the only console with great games.  So sad someone can't step up and give us a reliable system and great games.

with the NES it had the annoying habit of the player needing to blow into the game cartridges almost constantly just before playing a game otherwise it wouldnt work- or just as you're about to beat the final boss- the game crashes because u havent blown into the cartridge enough.

Exactly, Anyone else here who owned an NES would agree.

Ahh the joy of the NES...  I remember praying it would read my games when you've blown in it about 15 times and it still wouldn't read the game.  I remember buying the cleaning kits in the hopes it would make it more reliable....nope
