E3 2005 was May 05( maybe March 05 I can't rem atm) til Feb 09. The Xbox was in production for four years. I may be off by a few months but I'm not off by much.
Spore was easily the most overhyped. As far as the most hyped game goes, it's hard to argue against the biggest launch in entertainment history. GTA IV wears the crown. :|
I know. It had way more hype than the original Gears and LBP combined. It was supposed to be the game that you bought a PS3 for and deliver on a grand scale. Needless to say, it did.
I have to go with Killzone 2. The hype Halo 3 and LBP had are nothing compare to Killzone 2.

Halo 3 was a dreadfully more sought-after than Killzone 2 will ever be. Everybody yearned for Halo 3 - nearly two million people pre-ordered it in one country before its release. Killzone 2 is ludicrous compared to it and will never be aware of such numbers. PlayStation fans have nothing better to do than hype it beyond endurance, though.

If we look at the world outside SW it's Halo3 by far, it was just insane. KZ2 graphics hype is pretty crazy here but it seems to be up to handfull of fanatic individuals and the rest just roll with it.
Spore had massive hype. But i'm going with SSBB. Back at the Nsider forums it was completely insane every weekday because of the updates. For goodness sakes we had Tom Nook wars! The amount of controversy was enormous, and subsequently so was the hype. I don't remember fans of Halo, GTA4, etc staying up until midnight every night for the sole purpose of finding out about a new item, stage, etc, as soon as possible.
