You're thinking of fans. Fanboy's are a whole new level altogether. A fan praises something when it is good. A fanboy praises something regardless.

I dunno.

I think it has like, this negative connotation or something.

It's weird seeing that they are the most agreeable, well educated, and unbias people i've ever met.

Huh...

I dont have anything against a fanboy, what grinds my gears are those that reply something like ... "Xbox is cra p , sony rules" or somthing like that without give anything that remotely ressembles an explanation or facts for their points. But then again thats the meat and potatoes of system wars, without the fanboys this forum wouldnt be as fun as it is so I guess is cool...

Nothing wrong with being a fanboy in anything, but videogame fanboys are a different cut than everyone else. I'm a post-Bends Radiohead fanboy. All of those CDs are amazing to me and even if they're bad, I still like them. If I was a videogame fanboy for Radiohead, I would think that any song not by Radiohead is easily the worst song ever made. Any group that isn't Radiohead is crap at best. Thats what makes videogame fanboys loserish. It's not just them being a fan, its the addition of the extreme hate for everything else.

You just answered your own question. It is nice to have intelligent opinions but it is too bad fanboys usually defend their favorite companies and bash rivals using "impressive" logic.

Fanboys defend the companies of their product or their favorite thing no matter how bad it is. The problem with it is that it may cloud up their judgement towards other things that are different.

I could go on and on about what's wrong with being a fanboy:

  1. Fanboys don't care about arriving at the truth. They only care about what makes them feel good, which is intellectually dishonest. It's fine to have a strong opinion, but it's not fine to skew or lie about facts to keep thinking happy thoughts.
  2. Fanboys are not honest with themselves. They often force themselves to like something or dislike something based on where their loyalties lie.
  3. Fanboy arguments are rife with fallacies, often too many to count.
  4. Fanboys often attack people who are not falling "in line". For instance, I'm a PS3 owner that refuses to employ wishful thinking or intellectual dishonesty on its behalf and I also refuse to attack the 360 simply because I own a PS3. Alot of cows call me a lemming because of this, which is really stupid. Believe it or not, there are some of us out there that don't feel the need to be defensive of what we own and contemptuous towards protects we don't. It's just a damn machine after all.
  5. Fanboys often have a severe entitlement complex (a good example of this would be the folks who accuse developers that go multi-plat of "selling out"). That being said, fanboys are not alone in this regard. They are just more likely to have an entitlement complex.
  6. Fanboys tend to have double-standards. For instance, they might dwell on the unethical practices of the opposing company while excusing or overlooking their own favored company's unethical business practices.
  7. Fanboys usually see their opinions as facts. An example of this is when they will harrass somebody who doesn't agree with who they crown the"graphics king". They'll try to make it seem like their is something wrong with that person's eyes when what is really happening is a difference of opinion.
  8. Fanboys tend to see huge differences between things that arefairly similar. An example of this would be fanboys that think that one HD system graphically leaves the other in the dust when everybody else can see the graphics of both are pretty similar with one of them having the slight edge.
  9. Fanboys often try to eliminate points of discussion that don't favor their console. Examples of this are PS3 fanboys trying to eliminate sales from the discussion and 360 fanboys trying to eliminate PC/360 multiplats from the discussion.
  10. Fanboys alot of the time attack the integrity of reviewers when they don't agree with their review, which is wrong. They'll also misrepresent that review. A good example of this is the whole "Aaron Thomas docked Ratchet and Clank because it has too much variety! He's teh bias!" line. That's a misrepresentation. Aaron Thomas said that it has too much variety that's not to put to good use and takes the focus away from the best elements of the game, the platforming and the shooting. One can disagree with that, but don't tell me that he attacked it for having "too much variety" because that's not the truth. And it's also funny that these R&C fanboys don't bristle with indignation when Sonic games are attacked for variety not put to good use.
  11. Fanboys can't emotionally deal with the fact that somebody might not want their console of choice and so they try to boil it down to one reason. "They can't afford it" is a pertinent example. That might be true for some people, but not for all.
  12. Fanboys lash out when their favorite franchise or consoleis meeting its match in some way.

Basically, fanboys have emotional issues. These people are most of the time capable of solid reasoning, but they'd rather stick with their poor reasoning for emotional reasons. Regular fans would rather keep their dignity whereas fanboys would rather think happy thoughts. I don't mind fans as I'm a huge fan of many things, but we should be able to put things into context. I'm a huge Madonna/Beatles/Elton John fan, but I can recognize filler on their albums and what not. Fanboys lack this capacity.

That being said, I don't dislike fanboys of a musical artist or book or movie or game as much as I dislike fanboys of consoles and the companies that make them. In one case, the fanboys are just in love, however irrationally, with the artistic merits of something. Console/company fanboyism is more ridiculous because a console is a just a freaking machine for God's sake and the company does not give a crap about them.

A fan is someone who loves a certain console or series. They like to talk about why they like those things so welland will always hype the next installment and buy it. Fans will also argue why their system or game is the best, but they won't go into flaming territory and respect other opinions. But a fan also realizes a flaw in theirconsole or gamewhen they see one.

Example: Let's say I'm a fan of the 360. I love the 360 and it's games (such as Halo 3and Gears of War) and I love the upcoming games for the system and I'm proud to own it. I often argue why Halo 3 is better than Resistance, but I also respect that Resistance has some good appeal. I also realize that by owning a 360, I must deal with the RROD if it ever comes around.
That's a fan.

A fanboy is someone who loves a certain console or series and will support it NO MATTER WHAT. They don't care if their upcoming lineup isn't so hot or if a game in one of their favorite series comes along and isn't that great, they will defend it no matter what happens. While that much is ok, here is what makes a fanboy so annoying: They don't admit any flaws in their console or game and they will argue that point no matter how ridiculous the argument becomes.

Example: Let's say I'm a 360 fan again, this time in fanboy form. I love the 360 and it's games and I will NEVER even CONSIDER buying a different console EVER. Halo and Gears of War is all I want and I think Resistance and God of War and Uncharted suck, even though I have never played them. I think the PS3 is a piece of steaming crap, even though I have never played one. When people argue with me, I will defend my precious 360 to the grave.
That's a fanboy.

Yeah, as has been said many times already, they distinctly lack the ability to listen to reason and to carry on a rational debate. Their arguments usually boil down to "xxx exclusive is overrated and crappy, YYY EXCLUSIVE IS SO MUCH BETTER!"

The really funny thing about fanboys is that most of them think they are normal and will call other people fanboys while not taking note of their own fanboyism. Or if they make a thread called "[insert game] is GRAPHICS KING!" and somebody disagrees with that, they'll say "I smell a fanboy" not realizing that calling somebody a fanboy for having a different opinion is the Mount Everest peak of fanboyism.

many posters gave valid reasons why its wrong being a fanboy and they are absolutely right, but i believe that deep down everyone has a little fanboy inside of him which comes in various forms /levels..

Personally though i try to be as objective and unbiased as possible I still have my preferences and more often than not I always defend PS3 more than 360 cause I do prefare my PS3 as a gaming system.. However I dont bash systems i dont own causei find that stupid, just post what i think is a constructive criticism..

I think what you mean by saying "deep down everybody has a little fanboy inside of them" is that everybody's biased, which is absolutely right. The difference between fanboys and non-fanboys is that non-fanboys can put their bias into context. When they are being biased, they usually know they are being biased and they know how it effects their argument and will try to avoid it. Fanboys lack the ability to put their bias into context. Too many of them think that they are being 100% objective while rattling off opinions.

I know I can't be 100% objective since human beings are biased by their very nature. But I will try hard to be objective even if true objectivity is not possible.

Personally though, my bias probably comes into play out when discussing game franchises I love like Grand Theft Auto. I really don't get why people are biased towards a console. I do take into account reliability and what not, but I'm pretty indifferent to consoles. They merely are a means to the end, the end being the game.

yep, i totally agree with you and you did get it right.. me saying 'everyone has a fanboy inside of him' was being refered to everyone having preferences thus cannot be 100% unbiased..

You points make sense and the way i see things is that blatant fanboys are not the problem in forums cause you know how their (lack of) logic works but the problem in here is that most of the time we forget that forums are meant for everyone to post his/her personal opinion.. Sometimes people mix opinions with facts and try to pass their own as FACTS, which is wrong..

I just try to post my views/opinions and discuss them in a decent way, trying not to make a fool of myself :P while enjoying the systems I own and the games that get released on them..

I'm a fanboy and I see nothing wrong with it. As long as at the end of the day you understand that it's all about games, and every system has good games. You just might like PC games better, like I do.

Nothing really its just that fanboy "logic" (if you can call it logic) is non-debatable, trying to covince a fanboy is like trying to convince a rock to be soft.

I think if we are going to be fans of something we should be fans of the Developers that Make the Games... There is no real win for Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft... There not doing making the game so I don't see why we should argue for them or defend them... If we argue for them we should argue for Developers that make the great games like Blizzard, Square-Enix, Guerilla, Bungie, Valve...

I disagree.

The only reason i've been able to be relatively level headed when i talk about 360/PC games is because i separate them from Microsoft.
