final fantasy vii. it was the most amazing game in the world when it came out. it had what is still one of the best and most compelling stories ever written. the gameplay is excellent. the graphics (battle and cut scene not so much over world) were amazing for the time. i've played through the whole game at least once every year since it first came out. it has so much to offer in terms of side quests and challenges. who can forget the first time they bred a golden chocobo or finally defeated ruby weapon? or the drama at the end of disc one and the unraveling of cloud's past. there are so many twists in the story and so many quirky easter eggs throughout. unforgettable.
It's so hard to pick one so I'll name a few of my favorites:
Super Mario Brothers (NES) - was awesome when it came out, was awesome in super mario all-stars and is still awesome today through emulation. Final Fantasy III (SNES) - What a great game. great story, great combat system, just an all around great RPG. Metal Gear Solid (PS1) - probably the coolest game ever when it first came out. Final Fantasy VII (PS1) - best rpg ever? Grand Theft Auto 3 (PS2) - I got a ps2 just to play this game Halo (Xbox) - What is there to say that hasn't already been said? Half-Life (PC) - This game really got me in to online gameing, DM, CS and TFC were all so much fun. Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (PC) - A lot of people might not agree with this but if you like star wars this game was the bomb. I think it came out in around the year 2000 and people are still playing it online today, it has a really deep and fun saber combat system. Starcraft (PC) - Probably the best RTS game I've ever played, still fun today.
Banjo-Kazooie Beyond Good and Evil The Longest Journey Starcraft Chessmaster Series (Its old school rpg series has nothing to do with chess) Sonic 2 & 3 Strider Series Streets of Rage Series
My top 5: 1. Zelda OOT 2. Mario 64 3. Zelda MM 4. Banjo Kazooie 5. Mystical Ninja starring Goemon honorable mentions... perfect dark, MGS series, mario kart 64, resident evil 4... b xx
1. FFVIII - That's right, FFVII didn't come close in most aspects (Story, character/relationship development, etc.). The only thing that FFVII had that was superior was the main villain (Sephiroth).
2. Golden Sun - A game that pushed the GBA's graphics to the limit, with superb storytelling and great gameplay.
3. Fire Emblem (7) - Fire Emblem's debut in the US; Great combination of strategy gameplay and RPG story-like elements.
4. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Ocarina of Time was great, and Majora's Mask was overshadowed by it's predecessor (OoT), but by the time I beat the game I thought otherwise. (Plus the replay value is great with all the masks to collect) Fierce Deity Link is by far the coolest form of Link.
