Some people say only real gamers have gaming achievements, some gamers say they are not important and are a waste of time. How important are they to you and how do they help your gaming experience?

Care to elaborate "real gamer?"
It's a nice way to add on replayability. Like with Sengoku Basara 3, you had to do EVERYTHING in the game to get a platinum. They even have one for playing for 100 hours, which you are bound to do anyways.
I don't think a game should be based around them, though.

Assuming people who chase those achievements and trophies are "real gamers" and those of us who do not have them are casuals...Coolyfetts not really casual but cant say the achievement system motivates finishing games.

Who in the hell says that?
Anyways, I have nothing against achievements. If I get them, cool, if not, whatever.
When you get the platinum trophy how does Sony reward you? It's a nice way to add on replayability. Like with Sengoku Basara 3, you had to do EVERYTHING in the game to get a platinum. They even have one for playing for 100 hours, which you are bound to do anyways.

They don't. I reward myself for doing it.

Ahh I see. I think trophy/achievement hunters should be called 'pro' gamers because they wan't to fully complete their games as well as stats for multi-player as well as taking MP seriously. Recreational gamers play the game for the fun of it. gamers are gamers both are real :P
Achievements/trophies are only good if you get SOMETHING FROM IT.. Such as gamer points used to buy another game, addon etc etc.. Or ingame items/benefits.. Outside of that they are pointless.. And I don't get why people think how many Platinum trophies they have makes them "elite"..

Um do you come to SW often?
I do and I never really see anyone post that. Same here.[QUOTE="Coolyfett"][QUOTE="DJ-Lafleur"]

Anyways, Trophies/Achievements are pointless imo. They rank up their among the dumbest things introduced to gaming this gen. I like the rewarding feeling to come from playing the game, not from some meaningless digital form of instant gratification. I'm a gamer, not one of Pavlov's dogs.

You reward yourself for getting an achievement? Thats like giving yourself a cookie for eating a cookie.....how does that work?Coolyfett agrees with this.Achievements/trophies are only good if you get SOMETHING FROM IT.. I do get something from it... I get to try something in-game that I otherwise might not have even noticed. The first time I played Half-Life 2, I blew through Ravenholm unloading boxes of ammunition on zombies - sure, I'd occasionally pick up a saw blade, but it wasn't a primary weapon. It wasn't until I later replayed it on 360 that I tried making my way through using only the gravity gun. It was a neat experience I might not have had otherwise.Achievements/trophies are only good if you get SOMETHING FROM IT..

Some people really just cant get that. When I first beat Ninja Gaiden Black on Master Ninja Mode it was one of the most rewarding feelings I got from a game in a long time and I didn't need some digital pat on the back from Sony or MS to realize it.

would you mind explaining that? I dont see how trophies/achievements relate to behavioral conditioningback in the day, I'd beat a game then move on. The only games I ever frequently beat over again were Super Mario Bros.(NES), Sonic 2(Genesis), and Super Metroid (SNES).
Once achievements came into play I'd play games on normal difficulty then try the harder version to get the 100% achievements. I like 'em... Replay Value is a great bang for your buck.
I think they add replay value to games, are fun to collect and I like to compare them with my friends. I think it's stupid if people argue one is better then the other tho.
Yes, I'd describe them as important to me. I don't go hugely out of my way to get them but I will go after some achievements and I enjoy collecting them. Ultimately the replay value and persistent reward they bring is a good thing, but the downside is that they have proven themselves an easy way for developers to psychologically manipulate some games consumers.
Individually, yes; in aggregate, no.lowe0This, basically. But i sometimes care about achievements for a specific game. If it's a game I particularly like, then I'll go for as many achievements as I can en route to getting the full 1000 (if doing so is reasonable). If I don't have much care for the game, then I probably won't bother, regardless of the game's achievement difficulty. But even nowadays, when the divide between gaming and my main priorities has immensely widened, those standards hardly apply... I just play.
Honestly, I feel they're a waste of time. Some are fun to achieve for the SP campaign. But most you have to achieve in MP online, which I honeslty don't give a rat's fart about.
Achievements are just added perks to prolong a game, really.
They're nice but not more important than the game itself. I think as long as one treats it like that then you're okay. I had a friend who platinumed a game he already didn't like, playing it several times to "accomplish" it all. I think that is when one goes too far. But on the other extreme, those who would judge and ridicule others for simply liking trophies/achievement need to get ahold of themselves too. I like collecting trophies personally, as I've always been a completionist since I started gaming, so to see some kind of recognition, even if I am the only one sees that, just invokes that completionist side of me even more. In the end, some may say trophy/achievement hunting is a waste of time, and that the numeric recognition holds no true value, but then again neither does gaming in general (for the most part :P).
They're alright and add alot to the game. However if they're rididculous ones I don't feel like getting I don't care for them.
They're worthless to me but I don't buy into artificial value more than I have to. Seems like many people do in fact love virtual pats on the back.
They nice additions, but some people take them a bit too seriously... wanting games just for trophies or achievements, or buying/playing lesser games just for the trophies or achievements? That's a bit lame.Stevo_the_gamer
This guy pretty much thinks like me.
