mods have paved the way for intelligent people to make use of an exsisting game engine and make new innovative and great games. This is why i love the pc gaming scene even more, simply because you have access not only to developer created stuff but also all the great content mod teams work on. many mod teams talents have been discovered and games companies have taken them on as game creators.

Me being a consol gamer, I dont get the exposure to mods as say u would as a Pc gamer I assume. Although I have played UT2004 for a little while and enjoyed it just fine without the use of any mods. I guess Im just a traditional kinda guy..sure mods may help extend the replay value of games, but Im usually happy with what comes in the box.

Mods are undeniably good and the people who chose "THEY ALL SUCK!" need to step out of the console box.

Dystopia is a game with an incredible amount of polish...Battlegrounds is kind of cute if you're bored, Insurgency is pretty fantastic, Red Orchestra, DoD, and CSS are all amazing.

Some of the best PC games in recent memory were all mods.

Hm. Well, Counter Strike comes in a box, I guess. But it's still a mod. Point defused.

Yeah, but you don't need the original game to play Counter-Strike. Counter-Strike stands on it's own as a great game.

I just downloaded a huge Oblivion Mod. I've started a new game with it, and so far it has been great. For any Oblivion afficionados, it's the OOO mod, which changes pretty much everything at least a little.

Anyway, mods are great. Not the ones which screw up your save games and make you sob into your keyboardbecause the modder wasn't particular skilled, or was perhaps a bit of a sod, but the ones which really add to the gameplay, and fix all the holes you'd noticed when playing through the first time. Those mods are fantastic, add a lot to the game, and are generally free, which makes everything that little bit sweeter.

Modifications essentially mean free bonus content. One of my favorites are They Hunger for Half-Life. Counter-Strike is one of the most popular modifications in the world, if not the most popular. The Kung-Fu mod for Max Payne was great.

Well, they sure help fixing Resident Evil 4 for the PC version. And I don't mean slowly, I mean fast and good. RE 4 came without mouse support, now it has one, people are also doing high-res textures. Seriously, sometimes mods put developers into shame.

You don't need the original game (Half-Life) but you definitely require the engine to play Counter-Strike.

Mods are tremendously important. Its the best way for people to create really original offbeat games that would never be approved by companies under normal condition.

Portal, would probably never have existed if it werent for the mod team that made Narbacular Drop.

Mods/mod teams are probably the best way the industry to find and hire new talent and a way of testing out ideas. Without the mod community we'd probably have a lot less games today since companies would have a harder time finding people to make a team.

Thats independant of what mods do on the small scale of adding more life to a game.

Mods are only useful if u play pc games, sure there are proposed plans for the PS3 to support mods (UT3), but who knows how thats gonna turn out, as atleast to the best of my knowledge Ihave not heard of mods in consol games.

As I said before I enjoy content that is shipped with the game, and dont't feel that mods are necessary to further enjoy a game, but they do have the ability to enhance the experience if you chose to download mods.

*smashes head on keyboard*

Wrong kind of mod. The topic is on mods as in modifications.

You also might want to look a few posts above your own.

I'm surprised how many of you fell positive towards mods, when most people put down UT3 PS3's mod support by saying all mods suck because they're jealous fanboys. Also, there's a pretty cool UT2004 Portal Mod.

Depends on the mod. I'd only get them after I've beaten the game. Sorta like an after-dinner mint/dessert for games. I say "would" because I don't PC game.

If you type MOD three times while looking in the mirror MAILER_DAEMON will appear behind you and beat you with a frying pan until you take the caps lock off! Its true!

EDIT in regards to the question the TW games have some great mods ....

Natural Selection is my favorite mod. Its a fast-paced yet at the same time strategic game with the emphasis on teamwork rather then personal skill (Although having personal skill does help alot too!). The two sides marines and aliens play WAYY differently from each other but still manages to keep balanced play.

I love mods in general but this one in particular is absolutely mind boggling.

Sure.

Great

It would be pretty cool if you showed us some of your mods.

Ah, if only you had told me before I moved over to a new hard drive. All my old stuff is gone. It was a collection starting from a Doom total conversion, to a few fun Quake Deathmatch levels, a pretty buggy Morrowind mod, and an Unreal project I never quite finished.

This summer, though, I'm trying to get into SOURCE, though it's a major jump for me. A little confusing, but nothing I can't handle.

But only if you can get me into the GUFU.;)

ActionquakeII mod for quake2 was awesome. I would still play it now if there were fast servers with several people playing. It was similar to counterstrike except that sniper wasn't as dangerous, pistols were pretty lethal and it used a bandage system for dealing with injuries. The downside was that the lack of a goal beyond kill the other team meant that the last two players would often spend an inordinate amount of time running around looking for each other.

I havent been able to get a few Half Life 2 mods working unfortunatly...most work though...and they are great....

does Garry's mod require Both HL2 and CS...or just one of them?
