Well, soon enough, it will be the 2nd generation.

SNES and PS2 clearly won their part.

I'm just making an observation and pointing it out. Out of the three players in the console game left. 2 of them clearly won the generation they made their debut.

Well what do you expect you know? Less competion. The system is going up against the second playstation and last time I checked the Gamecube did just about as well as the Xbox.

Where does PC stand in all of this by the way?

Yeah, that's right. Why, let's ignore the fact I mentioned 'The console arena'. By no means did I imply a companies console gaming division.

I meant the entire company. :|

Yeah, why don't you open it up a little bit and take a look at the entire picture. Of course, it's always fun to sway arguments to your favor when people leave out entire chunks of market share and focus solely on 'this current generation'.

The Xbox 360 didn't even outsell the Playstation 2 6 of it's first 7 months on the market. Only to lose it's first place down the road to the Wii. Of course, I expect to hear the usual 'shortages' and 'The Wii isn't competing with...'

And the Playstation 3 did? buddy, your console is having a tough time beating the GBA's monthly sales.

The shareholders are going to expect performance. And they want long-term results. So far, they have been along for this console ride since 2001 and the returns look worse than a Uwe Boll movie.

Believability - (1 out of 5) You say the Xbox was a failure. Gamespot, 1up, EGM, Gamespy, and IGN say it was a success. Who wins? (hint: not you)

Effectiveness - (2 out of 5) Not exactly the reaction you expected isn't it?

TOTAL - (4)CRAPPY - Myfavorit part is mow you brag about the 360 getting outsold by the PS2 6 months out of 7, when the PS3 is getting outsold by the PS2 every month.

So how do you explain Sony's game division losing 2 billion last year with 1 billion on the 4th quarter alone.

Nintendo has a proven track record. Regardless of the bumps in the road they have turned it around and are clearly dominating. Sony's track record is even better. Two machines with 100M+ sales. Now, I don't believe that figure due to hardware issues, I'm sure everyone here in System Wars can determine a number amount that represents 'Playstation rebuys' due to failure. That's fair. But even if you deduct 40 million units from the PS2 that's still a lot of machines.

Here we are, it's 2007. Microsoft has been in the game for nearly six years and I'm just not seeing bright long term implications. While the recent success is a good start it does not prove to me that their future in the console world is imminent victory.

Microsoft took over Atari and Segas spot. Theres just no way the 360 is going to win this generation. With all of its great games, awesome graphics, and one year without competition, it still hasnt become a runaway success. Why? The 360 will finish a very close third to the PS3 this gen, thanks to non existant Japan sales. I see Microsofts next console being its last.

We could be staring down Nintendo domination. That is a very real scenario. Or all three could end up in a 33/33/33 percent deadlock. All of these predictions that the Xbox 360 has already run away with the win are based on what? Short term victories measured in the span of months? Sure, the success of the Playstation 3 cannot be judged in any part on what Sony's gaming division has done in the past. Because we all know the gaming industry is so radically different than everything else.

All of you saying microsoft is the same as sega are completly clueless for MANY reasons:

1) Microsoft has more money then nintendo and sony together, and had a 40 billion dollar surplus last year to throw into what it can show as profitiable

2)Microsoft can use this, even with a lose, to push itself into the media center of the home, pushing sales of windows media center aswell

3) Most finacial experts are claiming that by the end of this year the 360 will be pushed into the black, so it WILL have a profit.

This may have been mentioned aleady but who cares!!!

When MS entered the gaming arena, the "war" was already won with Sony being victorious. If any other company would have launched a new product line under those conditions, they would have closed up shop immediately. But since MS has money to burn to test the waters of a new market, the Xbox project was in full stride.

In the face of strong competition, MS accomplished what no other competitor has acheived in the past...a piece of the market share. No other company would have the resources to run a project that was in the red as a benchmark for future profit. But overall the underdog beat out the once all mighty Nintendo and earned the respect of the gaming community.

So in a nutshell MS didnt follow the path of previous market leaders, they created a path of their own!!! Whether you like it or not, MS is a force to be respected in the console realm. Their methods are unorthodox, but its winning over the market.

Give credit where it is due.

The 360 project is currently in the black, its MS gaming division as a whole thats in the red (Zune, other elements related). The 360 is doing fine in the market. They arent generating the type of returns Ninty are showing, but they are currently making a profit.

Well, you really are coming off like a fanboy in this thread. I mean, just your overall attitude in your first post is immature and childish. You threw in an  for good measure, apparently. The last two sentences in this otherwise debatable thread reeked of fanboyism. So, honestly, if you want to make a valid point, or carry a reasonable debate, by all means do so. I love how it's acceptable for all of you to just call me a few names, and then run away. I got your debate right here but I don't see anything except a few sandbox level insults coming my way.

Microsoft has a lot of money. They can stay in the console arena as long as they want. In addition, it is obvious what is different now. The 360 has a lot more support, it is cheaper than the competition, and it is easier to develop for, it currently has a better line up of games (released) than competition, and it is selling faster than the competition (except for the Wii, of course). Last but not least, XBL service is much better than what it used to be, there is more of a reason to use it (i.e. marketplace, more online capable games), and it is also better than other online services being offered.

So you are saying games don't matter then? Because the 360's great lineup of games says hi. :)

what do you mean the xbox lost just because it didn't sell the most doesn't mean it lost it was bad it still had enough good games to keep people entertain so it wasn't really a failuremastershake575

Well technically, not only did it not sell the most, it lost like 3 billion dollars. If it was competing with the PS2 for sales or market share, then that loss could have been swallowed. But barely beating Nintendo's biggest failure of a console, not even coming close to competing with PS2 sales AND losing billions is a "failure" no matter how you define it.

The only people who make a logical case are those who point out that MS said from day one they were willing to lose money to enter the market. However, I see that as being the same thing as saying MS was willing to risk failure if it gained them marketshare.

Typical, here comes Yellow_Rose again to call my posts 'flamebait'. Whatever you want to call it. You conveniently did that last night in the Ninja Gaiden Sigma thread to avoid making any type of response.

Care to go take care of that business first?

TekkenMaster606

Well, you really are coming off like a fanboy in this thread. I mean, just your overall attitude in your first post is immature and childish. You threw in an  for good measure, apparently. The last two sentences in this otherwise debatable thread reeked of fanboyism. So, honestly, if you want to make a valid point, or carry a reasonable debate, by all means do so. But if you act like this, get used to having the word "fanboy" thrown at you left and right.

I've been called worse by better users. But honestly, you're just running around calling me names, just like the other user calling my post names.

I love how it's acceptable for all of you to just call me a few names, and then run away. I got your debate right here but I don't see anything except a few sandbox level insults coming my way.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your debate, and given that I don't love any particular console, I don't really care to defend MS.

I did not call you any names, either. I simply said you were coming off as a fanboy in your OP by the attitude you were using, especially in the last two sentences. I don't think anyone likes being called a fanboy, especially if you don't beleive you are one. So, imore or lesssuggested that if you don't like being called a fanboy, maybe you should change the way you word your posts and address your "audience". The debate is just fine, though.

[QUOTE="gamergeekgeek"]cows think ms is gonna lose when 360 is selling 2 times faster than flopstation3 :lol:Master_Hermes

The Xbox 360 didn't even outsell the Playstation 2 6 of it's first 7 months on the market.

And the Playstation 3 did? buddy, your console is having a tough time beating the GBA's monthly sales.

I swear, your statement is completely ridiculous, It's like laughing at your school rival for getting a C- when you managed an F.

ROFL? Stop speaking please, your embarassing yourself. Check your facts before speaking.

[QUOTE="pins_basic"] Yup, MS is about to go out of business.TekkenMaster606

Yeah, that's right. Why, let's ignore the fact I mentioned 'The console arena'. By no means did I imply a companies console gaming division.

I meant the entire company. :|

Their game division is growingand looks like its going to be profitable for the first time. Looks like the new 360 slogan is going to be jump ship

Microsoft's gaming division has this whole generation to step up and prove history wrong. Long term is everything.

Thats my point, from day 1 MS has known the Xbox franchise is a long term investment, they didn't plan on being profitable with the Xbox franchise until the very end of the Xbox's life, and Gates has already said there will be another Xbox, so your point has no merit.

QFTW

no company loses 4 billion on a project and tries again

btw bill said somthing like no matter how much money ms loses on the 360 they are going to make an xbox 3 and only if they lose money on that they will quit
