i just feel like people should be able to express how they feel i mean just because u call a game terrible doesn't mean its trolling or bashing a game its just how you feel about not everything has to be

"so cool dude totally awesome game :)"

if we think a game is terrible or good we should be able to say it or if a system is not good.

i just feel like maybe if game developers see more of the complaints it will encourage them to do better

i cant even go on to a site and see the reviews on the games anymore because half of them are fake reviews now. i think forums and sites you can make reviews about a game should be 100% honest but most sites are trying to block most of them now

i like all systems and all games to an extent. just cant stand when people act like one is so superior to others and finds fault in them while ignoring clear faults in their favorite.

nintendo fanboys are usually the biggest culprits of this.

It's not, people just don't understand the definition of trolling.

I've been coming here a long time, 10 years already. And sometimes expressing hate for games IS trolling. And it's all in the context of the criticism. The most common method is when you can plainly see a user is lying about the game, making claims that is obviously going against the facts. And there are the patterns that show in some people's posting history; all the games of the target of hate are specifically on one platform. They don't bash the games on any actual merit, only because of the platform it's on.

This medium that is built on brands and exclusivity brings about fanboys, treating it like sports teams and rallying around fictional "victories". They foolishly pledge allegiance to these boxes and labels, as if their devotion will somehow be recognized. But the war is a self manufactured delusion.

And of course there are people who makes accounts and spill out obviously charged statements that is clearly designed to provoke the community, preying on the passions we have for our favored game series. It's not their actual opinion and they get their satisfaction from this. This is seen throughout every forum on every subject.

It all comes down to this; the rantings of biased gamers is pretty easy to distinguish from genuine and reasoned argument. Of course many games have flaws, there's no such thing as the "perfect" title. But where a game deserves it's criticism, it surmises that there are real points to be made, and wouldn't need misleading and deceptive language to do so. Nor based solely because it's on Platform X or Y, over the qualities of the game itself.

When you really look at the context and language of a post, you can always discern from the legitimate criticism, and blatantly irrational hate. An opinion is easy to throw out there. Having a well reasoned argument takes actual thought and effort. And when people are going to post their "opinions" fabricated on obvious misinformation that's either a position from ignorance, or in just as many cases intended to incite and agitate... then they shouldn't act all "innocent" when everybody calls them out on their BS.

Maybe now sure, but I bet it wasn't like that during the height of the Wii craze.

honestly i just think certain game mods take everything personal when its their liking of a game, because even tho its their job they are still human i think people dislike a game because its on the platform i think its because they keep trying to give it a chance and they aren't doing better.

i try to give wii u a chance a million times

There is the problem. You are allowed to say a game is terrible. Its how you feel. There are other human beings that have an equal free right to like the game or a system and disagree. You feeling a certain way about something doesn't negate others right to feel differently. Now along with this comes the "troll" and "fanboy" labels. Deal with it.

the thing is, people take criticism as trolling if it effects their fanboy ways. For instance I could say witcher 3 sucks and nobody would take it as trolling, but if i was to say some exclusive game like say halo 5 or uncharted 4 sucks, then fanboys would take it as trolling. The issue isn't always whats said or how you say it, sometimes it's just how people take it to "defend" their stupid piece of metal and plastic.

It was the same during the Wii craze. PS3 and 360 fanboys bragged about quality graphics and Nintendo fans just enjoyed the games. They had nothing to brag about other then millions enjoying their systems.

The difference is the people that often never even play the games spread negative criticisms about them based on their personal preferences and nothing more.

If your only comment is along the lines of 'this sucks because it's MS/Sony/Nintendo' that's trolling. If you consistently post questions that aren't really questions but more like statements seeking validation of your opinion, you are trolling. If you consistently post conjecture and or lies basically as clickbait or are presenting hyperbole with no actual facts or even experience with it, that's trolling.

Basically you are a System Wars regular. ???

You can always express how you feel. That's what the blog is for.

Basically what I said, but more distilled to its core. Well done :)

And I can also say; Anybody's opinion is subject to scrutiny. If you're going to post your opinion on a public forum, better to have one that holds up against scrutiny than one that was only thought half way and will be dismantled. Basically the house that needs a solid foundation.

how do you know the person hasn't played the game ? and all honesty you do not have to play the game to know if a game sucks like before i even played paper mario color splash i knew it sucked right away, tried it and i was correct, seeking validation for your opinion isn't trolling in my opinion.

@papermario: you can look at people's profile and see they have no achievements or time played in the game. People will even say they havent play the games but bash them anyway based on what they saw in some YouTube video.

Seeking validation of your opinion isn't necessarily trolling, but posting a predetermined opinion as a question and basically asking for high fives is.

Like asking a question with the answer in the question.

exactly. for instance i made a comment and was called a lemming. i posted pics of my gaming PC and my PS4 as proof of not being a lemming and their response changed to well others say that too and are lems. or I'll get a that's just your opinion, which i agree is just my opinion and that's what forums are for. for discussions and opinions. People get defensive over things they own and not only that but you do have people trolling who talk shit about stuff because they don't own it and sometimes people assume thats everyone so real trolling does lead to people thinking everyone is trolling. it's the whole "guilty until proven innocent thing" instead of "innocent until proven guilty"

That statement right there is the main major problem with gaming. How can it suck if youve never played it. You know how many people rated that game a 0 on metacritic because of that same lame excuse?

Did you even play Sticker Star either? You know how many people rated that game a 0 and never played it? You know many people rated Super Paper Mario a 0?

Like hell it can. Thats just plain silly. There is only one way, and thats by hands on experience from start to finish to get a most accurate picture.

@oflow Gotta agree with that. Many gamers are just super negative and whine, complain, and hate too much on stuff theyve never experienced.

Seems like welcome to the internet material.

Anyways, never try to make sense of what gamers say/think/do. You'll be better off.

It's why I started putting my systems in my sig, because I got tired of being labeled as a troll or put under various factions whenever my posts upset fanboys.

Fanboys gonna fanboy, opinions dont matter or are hostile in intent if it simply doesn't line up with their own opinions.......just like SJWs and BLM supporters funnily enough.

Depends how you say it I guess. "This game sucks" , doesn't really convey a specific idea, sounds like the person could be just hating for the sake of it.. Something like " This game sucks because the controls are akward and the difficulty level is too easy" , something like that at least you will probably get less flak for.

The thing with giving negative comments is that there is an infinite amount of that on the Internet, so if you want to say something negative, you need to try to be a little more specific, give some constructive criticism, otherwise your comment will just be swallowed up by the Internet, it's one amongst Trillions of negative comments out there.

If you are honest about your opinion, then you are not trolling....however, the rest of the Internet cannot read your mind, they just go based on what you wrote, and well....fill in the gaps with their imagination :)

@papermario: Maybe if troIIs had a life they wouldnt be so negative 24/7. Theyd find something to enjoy. But we all know that will never happen, TroIIs have no life. The hate has consumed them, its taken over.

The difference between criticism and trolling is pretty much just solid reasoning.

Trolling: "I hate Sony!"

Criticism: "Sony doesn't offer me anything to make buying their platform worthwhile."

@AdobeArtist: The thing that annoys me the most is when people bash a game w/o even playing it, which happens A LOT now and days. People will just bash a game cause they heard some douche youtuber say it was a bad game or heard one of their pretend friends say the game was crap so they have this monkey see monkey do mindset and complain about a game that they never touched.

Depends on the person really. Manticores' opinions are actually facts because they see the world in objective ways free from fanboyish filters, they also are the best at detecting real trolls and lems, two of the saddest species of fanboys. So if I dislike Halo, which is true, then the fact is Halo is not a good game and it is highly overrated. But if someone dislikes Uncharted that person is either a butthurted lem that has no basis to judge since his standards are the lowest possible or a troll that wants to go against facts just to cause stir. I rest my case. TLHBO.

@AdobeArtist: This medium that is built on brands and exclusivity brings about fanboys, treating it like sports teams and rallying around fictional "victories". They foolishly pledge allegiance to these boxes and labels, as if their devotion will somehow be recognized. But the war is a self manufactured delusion"

This is sig worthy dude.

I have recently, more than ever before stopped taking this board, hype game, debating less seriously then I ver did in my 10 years here. It's a joke. At times I post to see who replies and am happy it is the usual suspects.

I like video games, if I wasn't enjoying them I wouldn't be still playing them.

I've always owned Ps and Xbox, at times Nintendo and PC because I can, not because I need to justify it to anyone else.

Times we are living in. No nuance any more. Every single thing taken at face value and everything assumed to be the absolute worst conclusion.

Criticism is fine it's the maturity put into the post ie- lostrub is a troll who contributes nothing. See my example of trolling was also trolling.

Trolling is any post that could remit emotional responses which means most subjects like these along with religion and politics are troll topics period whether you intend to or not. The fault only lies with the responder that lets themselves get emotional about what someone else had to say. You can disagree, critique and rant all you want without intent to troll but when someone get's butthurt about it, you are a troll because you may have failed to word your post properly such as offering a non biased review or some display of understanding beyond your preference rather than just going on a negative rant like some do on here regarding choice of platforms or preferences.

When some frantic little fanboy spends all their time defending one plastic box while dismissing/attacking the other plastic boxes. That's a pretty good sign.

Never?

There is a big difference between expressing why you don't like something and giving well thought out answers WHY you don't like it, as long as you realize it is only your opinion and can respect another persons point of view whether you agree or not.

I think it really depends how you express your views. I see a lot of people who not only declare that a game or platform is terrible, but then proceed to argue with anyone who has a different view, in an effort (apparently) to convince them that they are wrong. I think that's where the trouble lies.

But if you aren't doing that - if you're clear that these are just your subjective views and you are happy to discuss them constructively - then I think that's fine.

I mean, there are games I'm not really a fan of (but that are popular), and I acknowledge their popularity, but I'd never go around saying "OMG why do you people like this game? You're all blind!" - I see that stuff happen all the time, and it's really unhelpful.

So, in my view, it's not so much about what opinion you have...it's more about how you express that opinion.

Is it trolling to say I don't like GTA games because I think the traffic mechanic is terrible because it annoys me? I really have never got on with it. It is a shame because I know it is a good game and I loved Red Dead Redemption because it didn't have it.

I also got a thread shut down for supposed trolling when I poked fun at the Playstation colouring book. It is strange because the only console I have ever owned has been a Sony one (PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP and Vita). Are we not allowed to take the mickey out of our consoles without coming to strife. Isn't part of the reason behind system wars that we can have fun with announcements such as an Official Playstation Colouring Book?

I find some of the topics more funny than trolling as some are too completely outrageous to be taken too seriously. An example being Persona 5 was a flop when it got the best sales of any game in the series I believe. Just have fun with this sub-forum and don't take it too seriously.

Here's when it's trolling: you have never played a video game and have no interest in it, but you enter a discussion of said game to trash it. Examples: Bloodborne hype thread, Gears of War 4 hype thread etc.
