When GTA was the biggest thing around, did it get COD style hate?

I didn't really go on internet gaming sites back in the GTA3 - San Andreas era. So I'm just wondering, did GTA get the kind of hate COD gets today? In the real world everyone had and loved GTA, but the same can be said of COD today. I'm just wondering how much of the COD hate is simply because of its popularity. For the record I don't personally like COD and I'm not making this thread to make some kind of a point for or against COD haters. I'm just curious about how much of the hate is based purely on its popularity. So, was there much internet hate for the GTA series when it was super popular?

I don't know how much hate their was for the GTA games before COD became popular, but let me tell you something. There are some people on this thread that don't hate COD because of it's popular, but because of reasons like Activision's inabilty to fix critcal issues that have been affecting the series for the past coupleof years for their massive fanbaseand their crazy fanbase.

Anyway when you say criticism, are we talking COD style hate or just the occasional person criticising certain aspects of the game? I mean are you just talking about the kind of criticisms you see being mentioned in critic reviews of the games?

I have yet to met a person that disliked San Andreas. It was probably one of the most fun games ever made. The only thing about it was that it's graphics were bad even for it's time, but nobody gives a **** when the games is so awesome.

No because GTA was never an annual series and Rockstar actually tries to improve the formula each time

GTA were actually good games with lots of things to do, and rockstar tries to innovate with each new entry on the series. CoD... well u get one every year with crap content, addictive but cheap multiplayer, all CoDs are almost the same just with few diferent weapons, ohh and they sell u just half of the game , then they sell u the other half via DLC, also.. activision says "innovation" is counterproductive. enough reasons for u?

GTA 3, VC, and SA: No, because they were pretty fun and at the time innovative games (GTA3 made sandbox games big after all). You may not like the games, but could respect them.

GTA4: Got and still get allot of hate for several reasons

1. HYPE INFLATION!!!: 4 got 10's across the board, which made no sense. It not a bad game, but nobody would argue it deserves 10's. For most gamers it's around 8-9 (tops). GTA4 getting perfect scores quite frankly pissed off gamers, because games of equal quality were reviewed much harsher.

2. IT TOOK STUFF AWAY: SA is still one of the most content packed games of all time. 4 took allot of stuff out, shrunk the city, and went for a more realistic approach. Realism = cars handle like **** now.:evil:

Like any game that gets hate they got it for the same reason. Fanboys were exaggerating about GTA games and proclaiming them as the epitome of gaming. Like always this created haters. Also many thought that GTA invented the sandbox genre, that also created haters. There were probably other reasons but these two are the ones I remember.

GTA is actually good, even though i didn't love the main story of iv.

Cod is the same bs since they first made it back on pc with cod1. Cod 1,2,4 were good. Then it all went down hill

GTA started getting hate this gen, because this gen the only GTA sucks. At least they only have one bad GTA game though, whereas the CoD series has more horrible games than good ones.

Now why would i rip on a local developer?

Mine too, still playing it a lot even today!

I don't hate CoD, Nor do I hate Sports games, but I definitely think it's ridiculous that both come out each year with minimal updates for a full $60 price tag. and with CoD $15 map packs. It's just too much. But I just let people enjoy their CoD every year, why not? if it's still fun and entertaining, and you don't mind the price then more power to those people! :D

I actually do like the game, but again, just too much for me to shell out full game price each year, for the same exact thing.

GTA4 did get its fair share of hate, mostly for being crap, and still getting 10's from everywhere, but overall any 1 title of CoD surpasses it in hate because you don't get a GTA game every freakin year with a 5 hour campaign, and crappy MP that you still want to play because it's where the majority of the online FPS community is at.

Besides, GTA3-VC-SA were freakin awesome.

It's average user score is 9.2 out of 10, so plenty of people loved it still. I personally really liked the changes and the realistic approach, but I am hoping that the next GTA will be a bit more like SA (as far as craziness goes)

I don't think so, because GTA evolved dramatically from game to game. CoD generally sticks to the same thing with each game. I enjoy CoD games regardless, but look at the jump in CoD games, it's not really that huge.

GTAIII to Vice City: Vice City set a HUGE tone and atmosphere that is one of the best in any game created imo

Vice City to San Andreas: San Andreas was HUGE with a ton to do, deep, amazing, really pushed the series forward.

San Andreas to GTAIV: While I don't think it deserved 10's, it was still a GREAT game, the city felt truly alive, with stuff to do all over, it was an amazing technical leap, and the episodes really gave it back that atmosphere of a GTA game, especially ballad of gay tony
