MS lost 5-6 billion on the Xbox because they dropped the price to match the PS2 too early and could never make it up in hardware and software sales. Now MS is just starting to make money and they have an extra 1 billion dollar debt because of RROD so I dont see them in a hurry to drop price.
On the other hand Sony has reduced size and exported the production of the Cell, focused on emulation instead of PS2 parts and had their blu ray parts drop in cost tremendously. Thats why they could pass on the savings to the consumer as well as boost their sales.

Microsofts game division is profitable, sony's is not, i believ the goal of any company is to make money, last time I checked anyway
your quite wrong on this issue, the RROD issue was accrued as a liability in 2007. that charge is over and done with. Please get some accounting knowledge before spouting off nonsense.

well first off, look what console still sells more, and go compare CoD4 on both xbox and PS, personally i think xbox looks richer. PS3 looks like its too dull and color is not there.in one year sony had four different price drops

MS is profitable after around Two years, Sony has not been out for two years. Sony has stated that they will be most likly profitable by the beginning of the fiscal year or around April.
As for the profitibility of its game division we are talking about quarterly, overall they have a long way to go.

Its not a debt but its money lost regardless.

You are probably watching gametrailers which recently came out and said they aren't running PS3 with it's optimal settings are were recording the video using component vs HDMI. If you saw both X360 and the PS3 version in real life you would not say that. Both are pretty much identical.

I guess you aren't looking at all then, because stock hasn't been an issue since launch and a little while when Halo came out. Infact I just picked 3 websites that I goto quite often and all 3 of them had the X360 instock.
It shouldn't drop the price just for the sake of it. If it's selling well at this price, there's no reason to have a price drop. Also, in the long run it gives Microsoft an advantage, as they can always drop the price later to boost sales (but if they drop it too much now, they won't be able to drop it any lower later on).
Sony having 4 different price drops is not something for them to brag about - it shows that they have failed to find an appropriate price for the system so far that meshes well with the market.
You chaps are aware that the PS3 has sold more in it's first year than the Xbox 360 sold in it's first year? :| Just saying.
Also, the 360 has had a one year headstart but only holds 35.7% of the market.
The PS3 had in one year got a 20.5% of the market. With a year extra, you'd think the xbox would have doubled their lead, or something.

They already dropped the price in the U.S. and they will definitely drop the price in Europe and Japan this year. They'll probably drop the U.S. price again at the end of the year. Don't worry, they got it under control. They are watching the European market closely. I don't think they care about the Japan market. They should just give the systems away for free in that region.

Well I'd rather give my money to a company who wants it and is trying hard to earn it than a company that is arrogant. And right now the most arrogant company in gaming is Microsoft. And they aren't even winning.

Yeah, because MS are just sitting on their asses right? It sure appears that way, lack of quality exclusives for 2008, over two years and can't revise the hardware to fix the multitude of problems (noise, rrod, etc..), developers once thought exclusive to X360 distancing themselves from MS (epic, Bizarre creations and Bungie).

Look man I know that lots of people just come around here and lie for the fun of it but I am not one of those people. Are people going to take my word for it when it's the truth and I own a PS3 or believe you who has some sort of deep rooted vendetta about the 360 and uses every chance to badmouth it.
I'm not really saying I am any more credible than you are I'm just saying people here see our words and know our histories and that works against you in this particular case.
I'm trying to help a friend find a Pro and this week I have been to every brick and mortar retailer in my area and can only find Arcades.
I'm sorry that this upsets your world view but it is the truth and I believe if it's in short supply in my area why would different areas be very much different.
I guess he will have to just order one online, thanks for the heads up.

thrones
Considering the last generation the Xbox had something like 22% of the market and PlayStation was in the 62% range (source: Forbes 12-2003), the "20.5%" share Sony picked up is barely 1/3 of their installed market base. This is a loss, no matter how you spin it.
For Xbox to got from 22% to nearly 36% is a victory, for at the end of the day M$ gained market share, translated as growth in their business unit.
While Sony lost market share which equates to a loss in business.
If you look only at market share, Sony is being demolished.
Yeah, 360 had a year head-start, but as I recall so did the PS2

You're absolutely right. The Xbox 360 has no quality exclusives for 2008, they haven't fixed the hardware at all and are making no effort to and all the developers, such as Bungie who has completely jumped ship becoming a second party developer, are going to stop making games for the Xbox 360.
You sir, with your unbiased insight on the market have opened my eyes.

Epic were never exclusive to microsoft and bungie are still going to support microsoft and the 360. :|

The expense was taken in '07 yes but they are not out of the red on their whole devision. They have made a profit on their last two quarters, yes, but it you look at the total profit/loss for the life of the console they are still deap in the red.

Really, you sure it wasn't Sony's "we are Sony and we can sell or wares for whatever we want, because we are Sony" attitude that is more arrogant? Or how about 6 months after release Sony saying, "we have a superior product and wont drop the price." Is that not arrogant? How about them saying the same thing a month before they dropped the price? Wait, how about the best one...why 1st generation controllers had no rumble...was it because it was incompatible with the six-axis or because they were getting sued for patent infringment a refusing to pay royalties? Yea, really, who is arrogant, really.
People say Microsoft isn't doing anything about faulty consoles. Last I checked, they extended the warranty to 3 years on the defective production run. Not to mention redesinging the system to correct the problem. Sounds like something to me.

I didn't say you couldn't find one online; of course you can. I'm simply saying that if someone wants to physically pick one up today, it's a little harder.
