I was playing Crysis earlier today, and from a distance everything looks perfect. If you start zooming into stuff though, it looks less and less great, and this is the best looking video game currently. Here's a photo of some small leaves I zoomed in on, and then shot. When do you think video games will get to the point where every single small detail in the game is almost completely realistic to what the actual world looks like?

Probably one day, but I honestly don't care much for the small details.

Don't make it so obvious that you're a fakeboy.

Also, we'll get photorealistic games once technology isn't hindered by consoles anymore.

I thought you were a fakeboy the first day you posted. Thanks for making it almost unquestionable. It'll probably be quite some time before photo-realism exists. Crysis looks amazing, but it's still quite far from looking photo-realistic, especially character model wise. Still, it's the closest we've seen in normal games at the moment.

They won't without HD 3D scanners, it would take too many man hours to get them with the current process. We may get a bit of progress when ray tracing takes off as developers won't have to spend time making ambient maps and such and can just concentrate of the textures and 3D modelling.

That's not even an in-engine screenshot nor is it as close to the textures as that screenshot is.

http://www.gamershell.com/pc/crysis/screenshots.html

Imagine how God-awful SSBB would look if you could zoom in on the textures. Ugh ... It makes me sick just thinking about it.

You mean proper 100% photo-realism powered by a GPU? probably never, or at least not for a long long time or until the interface changes somehow. Graphics that look believable? (as in Crysis level +) not next gen (or at least not the start-middle end of next gen), then gen after that.

Look at CGI in films and add 10 years. This generation is looking as good as "A Bug's Life" and Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars. Still not as good as Gollum.

Faces like 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' in 10 years? sounds plausable enough, but will the processors be able to run 100's at once all in fluid animation? Textures have had a leap this genereation and I expect that to continue.

Two or so years ago, I read an article stating that one of the top boys from Nvidia said that he expected it to take about 12 years for photorealism (on PC obviously). However sadly, I dont have a link so I cant prove jack...

Someone should make a game set in a mansion, which is like ridiculously detailed, everything is realistically destructable, and just make it a simple yet really satisfying shooter, like have different modes and stuff, but because it's in such a small space they could pack the detail in, and make the death animations really awesome, so it never gets old just killing people.

Probably not in gameplay. Though this may all change if Microsoft and Sony follows Nintendo's route and concentrate on innovative ways of playing videogames and don't care about graphics. Only PC games will look that good.

because then development costs will soar through the roof, there will be a psychological reprecussion on games like manhunt and gta and we'd have to go through the uncanny valley first it's not worth it, graphics are as good as theyll ever need to be people go on about how great crisis looks, yet unless you zoom on each individual pixel or play on a ridicuously high quality pc with a massive hd screen, you cant tell at all - personally i think a game like godfather 2 looks good enough (and fans were so angry about that game's graphics despite it having great character models and fairly decent lighting effects) the only things that need to be focussed on are enemies on screen at once, framerate, simultaneous visual effects, animation and clipping but things like models and lighting (based on the lighting from the new splinter cell coming out) are perfect as is and there's no point wasting money improving them when higher power systems can use their power to keep these graphics but make more things going on in the background

They can probably do it now just not in an open world....if you tasked the crysis engine to do nothing but render two boxers in a ring or some other scene that's not overly complex (at least compared to an open world) you could get a massive amount of detail.

Thing is without taking up entire harddrives worth of tga files it still wouldn't hold up to say taking a sniper rifle and zooming into the wall. In otherwords there's always a limit to how much detail you can put in, but alot of what makes something photo-realistic (in gaming) is basically what keeps you from seeing the little details (fixed cameras, third person views etc.).

The Crysis engine couldn't render two boxes that well. It's an engine designed for open-world environments. It doesn't contain the technology to render the boxes in that way.

When will people stop talking about things they don't understand?

Never. CGI movies are light years ahead of gaming in terms of visuals, and even the best looking CGI movies don't come close to being photorealistic when rendering people. And until you can make cgi people that look and move like real people, you will never have photo realism.

BUt that also raises the question about whether or not photo realism is even necessary. I mean, who really cares? When I play a game I want to enter a new world with new possibilities. I don't really want realism. I want to be able to get shot 50 times and have my health restored by eating a sandwich. I want super powers and/or the ability to steal cars and drive people only to escape the law by finding a star in an alley.

You can use cryengine to do anything the big things about cryengine 2 was dynamic lights shadows, AI logic, physics/particle effecets, animation blending, support for mutliple 64 bit proccessors etc etc. hell I could make 2D games in cryengine 2....Where does it say anywhere that cryengine 2 is only for open worlds? Hell through the testing of it 90% of the demo's you'd see was just one guy being rendered.

You mistaking the crysis sandbox editor for the actual engine or something?

there are many steps of technology required to get there, but honestly, in any fps, do you ever have enough free time to look at the freaking leaves close up? i would say graphics like that would be important for an adventure game, or some kind of tech demo, but honestly the details aren't important if you're actually playing an fps

I don't know when or if ever, but developers can achieve something close to photorealism when they use the proper art style (see Crysis). I don't really care for those kind of graphics though. I think games like Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 are the at the point where, you improving the graphics anymore won't mean much. From that point on, all you can do is use the art more effectively or have higher texture resolutions. The focus should be on gameplay
