That is, without hunting for it or killing myself in the process. They are not just difficult to find...they are impossible. Even 3 months after the launch, I remember seeing topics in the Wii forum with people saying "JUST KEEP CALLING!" and "STOP CALLING, WE HATE IT!" I went and waited only once, and realized it was a dumb idea. After that, I gave up and bought a PS3.

So, my question is this: In, say, 6 months, will I be able to actually find a Wii?

If in 6 months you still can't find one....holy crap....

....but I would say they'll become more common around June.

Supply is supposed to really pick up in April starting with tomorrow's big shipment, I think by the end of the month or sometime in May stock will start to show up on shelves.

Indeed.  The Wii is a fun little console that's a great change of pace.  I say get it.  You'll love the VC and Wii exclusives.

I dont like it at all.  It was fun for about 2 weeks then I never played it again.  I just hate the graphics, hate the "controller",  it's just a dumbed down console made for children and old people.  It would be a good console for nubs, but if you are a veteran gamer you will hate it.

Yes. It is a horrible purchase. There are no games to play and the price is atrcious. Really... $250 for a system that will not have tons of unique games that will not be available anywhere else?

Seriously... there are no games to play...

*cough*

Elebits
Excite Truck
Godfather: Blackhand Edition
Madden 07
Rayman: Raving Rabbids
Red Steel
Sonic & The Secret Rings
SSX Blur
Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
Twilight Princess
Warioware: Smooth Moves
Wiisports

And seriously... there are no games coming out...

*cough*

Animal Crossing
Battalion Wars II
Big Brain Academy
Bomberman Land
Dewy's Adventure
Disaster: Day of Crisis
Dragon Quest: Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn
Forever Blue
Harvest Moon: Tree of Peace
Kirby
Mario Party 8
Mario Strikers Charged
Manhunt 2
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
MySims
NiGHTS
No More Heroes
Opoona
Project H.A.M.M.E.R
Project Island Z
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles

Indeed. The Wii is a fun little console that's a great change of pace. I say get it. You'll love the VC and Wii exclusives.

I'm not even interested in the Virtual Console and it's still my gaming console of choice. Obviously the first-party support is better for the Wii than any other console. Nintendo's own games look superb: Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Paper Mario, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Battalion Wars II, and the next iterations of the F-Zero, Star Fox, Donkey Kong (they're finally making a true platformer Donkey Kong for the Wii), Mario Kart, and Legend of Zelda franchises. I still maintain that the third-party support is not weak and will only get stronger. You'll be able to enjoy Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (the only online co-op RPG that isn't MMO on any other console), Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Dragon Quest Swords, a NiGHTS Into Dreams sequel (the original was one of my favorite games from the fifth generation of video game consoles), Dewy's Adventure, No More Heroes, Sonic and the Secret Rings, SSX Blur, Elebits, and Trauma Center all as exclusives. With such strong sales you can anticipate further third-party support, and many developers have announced projects for the Wii or their interests in developing games for it (if you're a Mana fan, expect the next Mana game to be on Wii).

There comes a point when Nintendo will realize that creating artificial shortages only hurts them. People do eventually grow tired and go for the competition.

Never. Not finding a product is actually considered to be a good thing (on this forum anyway!). You should be happy about the fact you can't find it! Wii is sooo good, you can't find it! Seriously, how hard can it be for Nintendo to manufacture Wii's???

Apparently it's too much of a challenge for them to manufacture both the Wii and the DS without one having shortages.

While Sony's over here manufacturing PS3's, PS2's, TV's, Computers, And a slew of other electronics.

Production of a certain number of units is planned months in advance. Nintendo was caught off guard by overwhelming demand. They're hiring more companies so that they can manufacture the consoles at a faster rate. Contrary to popular belief, companies can't pull millions of machines out of their corporate ass on a whim.

The 360 had a bad shortage through March of last year.  Is Microsoft creating artificial shortages as well?  lol.  The Gamestop thing was only a rumor.  A rumor from a single source.  Now, if BB, CC, Wal-Mart, Target, and a bunch of other stores were also saying the same thing...then there might be some truth to it.

I don't know what rumor you're speaking about. I'm basing my theory on what I've seen. I don't buy that Nintendo didn't expect the demand, and I don't buy that it's taking them this long it ramp up the production rate. I believe they're doing this on purpose to make their console more desirable to the common consumer who see's a sold out product as something they MUST have NOW.

Proof that the PS3's have mass defects?
Didn't think so.

Also, it shouldn't be a surprise that the Wii isn't a defective machine. The hardware inside of it isn't nearly as complex as the higher end consoles.

It just doesn't seen productive to me to not have it on shelves selling.  Casuals don't think too deeply into the matter.  But I do think casuals like the Wii itself.

Nintendo completed a worldwide launch with scarce units. They did it with mass sell outs that still exist today. Sony realised a world wide launch was not logistically smart for them, so they held off.

Sony's the only company here that realises that having enough units is a good thing. M$ gets that now, but at their launch they didn't.

Yeah, I agree, shafting an entire continent is a better compromise.

Different generation, different standards. At the time the PS2 was launched, it was a complex machine. Still is, actually, compared to it's fellow generational competition. The Wii is what, slightly more powerful than an Xbox? That's several year old technology we're looking at. Hardly complex, and shouldn't be difficult to manufacture.

Unless of course, they're doing it on purpose.

Did you ever consider the idea that since Sony is a larger company they would have more factories and areas to produce these goods, whereas Nintendo is pretty much all about video games, and thus are probably a smaller company with fewer factories and production forces?

double negatives for the win.

It's better to have the product available to the consumer, rather than it being impossible to find. How is that understandable?

That is, without hunting for it or killing myself in the process. They are not just difficult to find...they are impossible. Even 3 months after the launch, I remember seeing topics in the Wii forum with people saying "JUST KEEP CALLING!" and "STOP CALLING, WE HATE IT!" I went and waited only once, and realized it was a dumb idea. After that, I gave up and bought a PS3.

So, my question is this: In, say, 6 months, will I be able to actually find a Wii?

wal-mart had them tonight. some stores held them for in the morning. so check your local walmarts.

Did you ever consider the idea that since Sony is a larger company they would have more factories and areas to produce these goods, whereas Nintendo is pretty much all about video games, and thus are probably a smaller company with fewer factories and production forces?

Lets just go on the idea that you are correct. I would suggest Nintendo needs to look at their priorities. The DS has been around for awhile, there's no need for the amount of units Nintendo is shipping out. They need to shift workforce from the DS to the Wii.

And they should have done it months before the Wii even launched. Honestly, if you're about to launch your "comeback" console. Make enough units to go around. It's simple.

But I don't buy that either. Nintendo isn't a small indie company, if they need more factories they make them. They're not broke.

Well the Gamecube and XBox were more powerful and didn't have such a problem.ShakeNBake1491

More powerful =/= more complex. The PS2 was far more complex of a machine than the GCN and the Xbox.

The PS3 is lightyears ahead of the Wii's hardware, and much more complex than the 360, yet we don't see rampant defects from it.

Factories aren't something that just pop up with the expenseof a few grand. They take awhile, and the DSL is selling faster than the Wii. Why should they switch priorities? They already have hype in the bag. If people want your product and another one is still selling faster, you'll continue to work on that fastest selling product. And no, they are no indie company, but factories, people to run those factories, and the dozens of other costs coming into running production for several factories pose a problem.

Nintendo doesn't "make" factories, they contract out manufacturers. It was recently mentioned across IGN and other media outlets that they're hiring new manufacturers to meet demand.

Whats is the point of been complex if it provides no performance advantage. Just makes it harder to develop for.

When you're trying to get your new product into the homes of people across the world, you don't let your other product effect the first's production. Nintendo doesn't need to be selling 120+ thousand DS's a month when they want the Wii to be the most successful it can be.

Not if they don't see it as profitable in the long run to switch.
