When will Microsoft build/buy new AAA studios?

So it's been five years since MS bought Mojang and Minecraft IP. Since then, they've closed down Lionhead, Twisted Pixel and Press Play. Granted, they were unremarkable studios. Lionhead did some good stuff.

Now they're down to three legimately great studios in 343, The Coalition and Turn 10 who could blow everyone away with a bunch of new IPs but they will be shackled to the sacred G(ears)F(orza)H(alo) forever. Rare, who's past their prime and making a water simulator no one cares about and Mojang, don't care about Minecraft updates.

I used to be a Microsoft fanbitch (look at my post history) but it's time to wake up and smell the shit. Microsoft are run by a bunch of monkies. Phil, here's a tip, buy or build a bunch of AAA game studios (like IO Interactive and Playground Games) and have them make you some killer exclusives. PROFIT.

Firstly, 3rd party is where it's at baby and secondly, Sea of Thieves > U. :P

@FastRobby: Don't tell me you especially don't want MS to buy/build more 1P studios. This is pretty much what every Xbox fan wants.

But I can play third party on PS4 or PC ?

But seriously what's the point of going for Xbox when 99% of its games are on PC and 95% of its games are on PS4 ?

95% can't be played on Bore & Bait so for console gamers X1X is quite obviously the way to go. PC/Xbox are MS's Win10 go to machines and neither they nor myself and likely hundreds of million of gamers don't consider them in competition with each other, only nerdy SW Pee Cee'ers or those who Hide behind the PC for SW purposes act like they care that game can also be played on PC and even then it's win/win with buy once play anywhere. Say it with me; Thank you MS, for the gamers.. Jazz. :P

No no, the more the better. But don't use Rare, and Mojang as an argument to why they need new studios. Both of them are doing really well

On topic, I think Microsoft is transitioning their gaming division to a service type of division so making games is probably not a priority for them now. I can imagine a future where Microsoft sells services like, for example, hosting through their azure platform for video game companies or they'll try competing with steam and the like. So don't expect much effort from them on the games front.

More games is always good. Even the bad ones people with bad taste have to be catered to too.

Did none of you read the thread that's a few spots down about making more 1st party games and they were 2-3 years out. Games don't happen overnight.

They not going to. Microsoft is not interested in that and never will be. They have Forza, Halo and Gears and they will sign off on second party deals to make games for xbox. I just hope the games are good,, be waiting awhile to see them.

Games coming in 2017 got announced years ago. Where is the deals made 2015-16? For me, it's a sign Microsoft main interest is making money now and they are cutting off the fat, were they can. (Game pass, EA access, dropping marketing deals) MS is not spending and is earning money from gaming with this.

Phil Spencer is just telling gamers what they like to hear, like example does not like third party deals? MS does not want to spend the money, the reality. I just see behind the PR speak what he meant.

In a business sense, it is better to hire out second party to create new IP that are owned Microsoft or Sony. Let them worry about payroll and staffing, rent, utilities, etc.

If they create a blockbuster series that's when you buy. They have to earn it first.

There are tons of second party devs out there and new companies being created all the time.

When it becomes financial feasible again, ie...never. Sony will be forced to follow the same route in the end as well. Playing this exclusivity game is a total waste of money. People didn't go with PS4 because of exclusives, they went with it because it was $100 cheaper and the negative press MS received.

Microsoft is not delivering a strong first party quality AAA line up of games. Microsoft can make money, but when they don't make xbox strong again with games, i going to call that out.

MS don't build new studio, they buy them and they crash them with no survivors. :^)
