Especially the PS fans. Heres some of the scores of the greatest JRPGs of all time. Yes, this is in response to Lost Odyssey here, despite its review not being bad an Gametrailers calling it a must have. I just hate the whole if it scores badly its a bad game mentality this forum has, especially with JRPGs, the most poorly rated games here on gamespot, and nearly all sites for that matter

Legend of the Dragoon- 6.4

Tales of Destiny- 4.9

Persona: 7.3

Odin Sphere: 7.6

Suikoden- 6.5

Star Ocean: To the end of Time: 7.9

Hack 3: 5.0

it goes on, trust me. Awesome games, called **** by the reviewers. I would like to add Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey in there, I love both. I seriously suggest you actually play games before making a judgement. And seriously, don't talk about what you've played of a demo or about it when you hate the whole genre. I really don't like fighters or racers, do I call them bad? No. I just let the experts in the genre discuss them themselves. Im not going to talk about games that I have no interest in; if i did, VF5 would have gotten a 5, Forza a 6.5, etc.

I think people have been spoiled by Final Fantasy. Not even how good they are, everyone just thinks that the games that aren't FF are derivitave of FF.

The Legend of Dragoon is so underrated. Loved the combat in that game. The game is extremely linear, yeah, but still quite fun.

No, so many JRPGs are underated, its not even funny. Having played some of these and then seeing some of the ratings afterwards made my just say wtf? and walk away. I literally thought the site was having technical problems with many JRPG reviews.

ON a different note- the Lost Odyssey Official hype thread (lol). Wasn't LO hyped an A, not AA? I remember that hype thread a couple of days ago. The PS fans were saying that the Xbox fans were playing it safe. What, did that mod poster try to account for that. lol. corrupt mods.

Some are jokes, but others are more accurate.

I don't see how 7.5 is a bad score at all? :|

I still cry over that Odin Sphere review. :(

Though in all seriousness you can say this about any genre that isn't in the mainstream. Just look at fighting how Third Strike and Guilty Gear XX didn't even get AA.

Just curious, did you count them?

Im seeing tons of A's and a couple of AAAs (what Id rate the game so far), and a few AAs.

I demand a recount!

or at least some sort of text document where you counted it. Or was it guesstimation?

And whats to stop a non 360 owner from voting? And why is there a hype thread? and why do we only go by gamespot scores?

I think you need to read Kevin VanOrd's personal blog before making such comments. He made a good point on how the JRPG scene has become nothing more than regurgitation; he praised games like Persona 3 that dared to be different, even though in his belief people would never take notice to them, and continue to like the same thing over and over again. He also said JRPGs like Blue Dragon which are games that would have been good a few years back, but now just suck because are basically the same thing people were doing 10 years ago.

JRPG reviews aren't a joke, because you can't fault a person for thinking something looks outdated doesn't deserve a good score.

Thats complete crap. Halo, COD4, etc. are just what we've been playing for years but in nicer graphics.

Why the hell does something have to innovae to be awesome.

Smuggiebear

the recount was done. there were more AA votes than any other. we don't count every vote since we can spot the fake ones. the hype threads exist so that we know what each game is hyped. we use gamespot because that's what was decided.

If you're talking about FPS games, then there is a different emphasis placed on gameplay. The Firs Person Shooter genre isn't like RPGs in general. I've always found that in FPS games you as the player have a general connection to the game as a whole, while in RPGs you have that middle man, ie your character, that you've got to work with. It's the options that are presented that have became the same thing over and over again.

I completely agree.

However the reason they don't change is more so the decline of the core gaming market in the Japan. The market for these games keep shrinking and shrinking resulting in most publishers telling developers to focus solely on what the niche gamer wants.

You mention FPS's later, yes they are getting more monotone and stale but the thing is that they have just started doing this, JRPG's have been getting stale since the mark of the millenium. I also think part of the reason is because they are just on a broken formula to begin with. Face it the Japaense side of RPG's (I could argue most RPG's in general) are made for a 2D interface. Most "3D" JRPG's usually just take the 2D interface and add 3D models to it and a 3rd person perspective creating broken design. The only true "3D" Traditional JRPG I've played was Dragon Quest VIII. Unlike games like Star Ocean TtEoT and Final Fantasy X the game was designed solely for a 3D interface. Instead of events taking place as you walk events happen when you travel to different towns that then tells you exactly where you need to travel in the town to get to the next event. The game also contained open world travel as well as side quests postioned on places where you explore. Basically DQVIII was great in 3D because it was designed for 3D. Again most JRPG's don't do this even today. It's kind of sad, the JRPG genre was known for high quality and innovation. I could only imagine how great the games would be if Japanese developers were willing to break the "can't copy out of respect" chain by mixing forumlas and battle systems to great some amazing RPG's. Sadly even if they did the games would still sell poorly since everything outside of the Square-Enix 3 sells poorly both in Japan and World-Wide.

Ever given any consideration that the genre is stale, and as such is lacking the much needed innovations that have kep Western RPG's(The Witcher, Mass Effect, Oblivion), and that keep re-inventing the wheel FPS titles, Half-Life, Halo: CE, Call of Duty 4, Crysis. Or maybe it's not the editors and the publishers, but the entire JRPG genre that are the joke.

Hack series is crap, star ocean was Average and deserved it's score, The rest are Average except for persona 3, Good Jrpgs get good scores, final fantasy 10 got like 9.5, final fantasy 12 got 9 and final fantasy games are the standard of what Jrpgs should be aiming for but fall short a lot of the time probably because of production value, all the other final fantasy games from ps1 and ps2 are 9s except for final fantasy 9 I think, so basically if a jrpg wants a 9 it has to be final fantasy standard and **** all Jrpgs are.

Another Great Rpg dark cloud 2 got a 9, kingdom hearts 2 got a 8.7, the old great xenogears got a 9

Jrpgs get good scores there is just a amazing standard set by some developers, it's just so many fall short because the standard is so high.

yeh ,,,, just look at the scores on atlus games vs the resell value.. for the fact alone that I resold my used copy of digital devil saga 1 for $100, it should be considered the greatest game of all time... JRPGs always get knocked down.. they arent being rated on the same scale.

Actually I don't think neither The Witcher or Oblivion have reinvented anything. Oblivion is a dumbed down version of morrowind and The Witcher well, I'm pretty sure alot of things in that game have been done before in other games. one of the things that made me enjoy persona 3 was how different it was compare to other jrpg games, but i found the turn base battle system dull and repetitive after a while.

game is under appreciated it in sw cause no one ever talked about the game even when it first came out or when it received rpg goty. only time i heard the word persona was when cows put persona 4 as their list of future games for the ps3 library when its not even announced..

When will people learn that the JRPG genre isn't what it used to be. Sadly my two favorite genre's are the ones that aren't what they used to be. Fighting and JRPGS. Anyone who doesn't think the JRPG genre is in decline is fooling themselves. You act as if JRPG reviews are the only joke. Street Fighter III couldn't even break 7.5.

You want to know why JRPGs can still be good despite poor ratings? This is because many reviews take the gameplay and battle systems into account, so any RPG with a mediocre battle system will get a harsh review even if the story is nice. The main thing is, most people who buy JRPGs do it mainly for the storyline, not the oh-so-awesome battle system, and so forth. Final Fantasy 7 had an average (but still okay) battle system, but the storyline was so incredible it easily made up for any of the games weaknesses, making FF7 an epic game. I feel this same way for Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, etc :)

Personally, I think both jrpgs and wrpgs on any systems aren't worthy the title RPG; the roleplaying elements from both genre are still at the level of choose your own adventure...

QFT I find the ammount of JRPG's and WRPG are increasing, but also less quality I like to stick by the quality titles...FFXII Was a good game, very poor story for a FF game though, just made the wrong person the main character IMHO seems like they were taking a more WRPG style and focusing less on story but damn them! The game had potential to be epic with a good story.

I agree. I think it's all about execution. Some FPS are excuted WAY WAY better even with old ideas. Crysis, for example, doesn't do anything new, but the powers and the gunplay is excellently done. JRPGs should be graded the same way. It just has to be executed right, and FFXII is a prime example of a game that didn't do this.

After a few hours of LO I have to say the old school feel, art style, and story have really made it an enjoyable experience. Any JRPG fan would really like this title. I'm not usually a nitpicker but this game deserves to be in the 8s score -wise.

Maybe, many JRPG fans are just stuck in the past, go play doom 1, or quake 2, and tell me a graphical update would make those games amazing (as a new, unfranchised game), ... ok, now.. many JRPG fans seem to think that having the exact same game style you played 10 years ago, but with pretty graphics makes the game great, well, it dosent genre's evolve.

Sure, Jrpgs probably change slower, battle systems especially with them, they are indeed timeless, but small intracasies change then alltogether.

People dont even get flamed anymore when they say "FF and DQ are only scored high because they're FF and DQ names" its rediculus, FF scores high consistantly because its constantly evoloving with the time, always pushing new ideas, making the genre as a whole better, has massive production values and is never rushed to meet demand, you can not like ff12 all you want, but its a great game if you give it a chance instead of getting all pissy that its "different".

aaaannnndddd thats why JRPG's dont score well anymore, not because of "teh bias"

The moment I stopped caring about reviews was when my favourite game of all time got a 5.5
