The reason both the PS3 and 360 sales are pretty lack luster is not because "the no AAAE titles" or "the hardware failure"...it all comes down to pricing.

Do you guys seriously believe either console can sale at the price points of 279, 349, 399, 449, and 499 when last gen all consoles started at 299? Not only that but sales didnt hit its peak with the mass market till around the 149 price mark.

I think both Microsoft and Sony have learned a lesson this gen, and I'll be surprised if any console next gen is priced above 299.

Pretty much. It doesn't matter what games you can play or being able to watch Blu Ray. People just aren't bothered paying that much. I believe that's why PS2 is still selling so well.

I can agree that if the PS3 launched at $300 then it probely would of took over the world. But the 360 is the biggest piece of garbage...There is no hope for MS.

Yep, people really thought GTA 4 was gonna make this huge splash, ummm GTA the most casual based audience on the market is it really gonna push people to pay over 300 dollars on a system?!? I dont think so.

The mass market doesnt care about how many features or top notch games you have on a system, it will always be the price of the system they look at first.

It should also be noted that Sony might not recover just by releasing a more reasonably price console next gen. Nintendo made the similar mistakes with n64(more advanced hardware and more expensive console + games), and it took them over ten years to regain the top spot.

Your right that PS3 might of done better if it was cheaper, but that doesn't mean they can just waltz into next gen with a cheaper console and expect to take over where they left off with the PS2.

Price of consoles does have a factore, but it isn't the reason that 360 and PS3 are lagging behind.

Xbox 360 goes for $280 (if I remember correctly) at its arcade version. I would be willing to guess that the average consumer knows what makes the SKUs so different or really cares.

You cannot tell me that people buy something because it is cheap. That is simply stupid. $250 is not pocket change. You need a reason to go out and buy this machine.

No GC launched at $199.99 (in NA)

And despite the lower price, and with each price change after each E3, GC simply could not compete. At $99 in 2003, GC still have no chance but ending up at the 3rd place.

Wii's price is only secondary reasoning behind it's astronomical sales. The Wiimote is the main attraction.

This is true. Due to the pursuit of a strong gaming machine being put in the market by Sony and MS, the prices hiked way high, therefore sales and game development plummeted. We kind of are in a gaming drought. Next gen should be better; I also hope Sony learns a lesson from this gen.

I don't think this is "fanboy logic." Also, the GC didn't do well due to external factors, such as being last to have dev kits out and living on franchises (mainly first party).

The PS2 won because it was BOTH afforadable and had great games, the GC was just affordable. Doing it half arsed isn't enough. If a game console is going to sell to the top spot, it must be BOTH afoordable and have games people want.

And, considering the domination of wii games on the slaes charts coupled with the only resonable price tag, wii is on top.

Wii games may not be good IYO, but they are selling and it's due to mass appeal.

MASS CASUAL appeal well played card by nintendo. The system itself is still garbage next to the Ps3/360, Come On Mario Kart? Wiifit!? Im glad GTAIV outsold it. Mgs4 is Out now, I hope it hurts the Wii as much as Possible.

I've certainly had a lot more fun playing mario kart with my friends and online then I have had with GTA4. A couple weeks after I got GTA4 I shelved it. It just doesn't have the legs to keep me playing.

What's funny is that in a month or two, both GTA4 and MGS4 will be off the top 10, but MKwii will still be up there prolly until fall.

I'm not trying to imply that the 360 or PS3 will begin to surpass Wii in sales once they reach that 249 price point, my whole thing is that they will actually be more competitive. Seriously it's pathetic to see both systems getting out sold by the Wii 3 to 1 and pricing plays a big role in that.

It's true! GTA4 and MGS4 may be great games, but they will be almost forgotten by fall, whereas games like Mario Kart will still be popular. Price may have a big factor on how consoles sell, but so do games and contrary to what some people might say, the Wii has very good games too that can appeal to a bunch of different people, which is why it is currently the top selling console of this generation.

Prices are a factor, but certainly not the biggest.

Wii is priced at 250, the cheapest xbox 360 at 270 I think.
None of those numbers are exactly pocket change, you don't buy a Wii just for the sake of it.

Thus there must be much more than price, otherwise Wii would not outsell the competition more than 3 to 1. . . .

Cheap =/= Success.

Homesrfan

Because it had only a few months to enjoy that price lead before the PS2 was dropped to $199 too?

Seriously, saying price is a large factor in a console's success isn't fanboy logic, it's elementary economics.

Cheaper things sell better. Other factors have to be considered, sure, but if the Wii was the same price as the PS3, it wouldn't be leading the sales race.

1. Even though the PS2 was more expensive than the GameCube, Sony did drop the PS2 price to $200 only 6 months after the GameCube launched.

2. The PS2 didn't really start taking off until late 2001-mid-2002 anyways, when the price cuts and great games happened.

3. The Xbox 360 and PS3 are horribly expensive and frankly don't have that many great games.

if the Wii was the same price as the ps3, then it would have similar hardware. it would be a different situation then, so its hard to make speculations like that.

It really depends on the current economy too. Right now with gas prices as high as they are, people are being much more picky with how they spend their money.

It isn't just pricing.

It is a combination of price, wii-mote, and "casual" games. Yes, the Wii has a few "hardcore" games, but most of their games are casual games that someone who has never been a gamer can easily get into. I guarantee a lot of people own a Wii who have never owned a console before.
