The PS2 is the best-selling console to date, having reached over 140 million units in sales by mid-2008.

During thanksgiving weekend PS2 performed well selling around 175,000 units!!!!!!!!

when will the madness end??? 2009? 2010? 2011?

its no easy job to surpass the PS2's huge sales... i think that 2009 will be the final year for PS2 should devs stop supporting the console... still PS2 is the most successful console ever and surely has the best overall games library..

regarding the Wii depends how long Nintendo will keep supporting the console and if 3rd party devs start releasing quality titles for the console which will attract more gamers to buy the console... personally though i think Wii will continue selling and be a huge seller i dont see it surpassing the PS2 in terms of overall quality games library and units sold...

Pretty much the PS2 has been dead for years, 2-3 games a year that are worth playing doesn't count as sony supporting it. Thing died long ago, only ones left are people trying to make a quick buck out of it.

Wii and DS will dominate this gen. Though I doubt Wii will be out long enough to sell 140million.

The Wii is selling at a faster rate but I don't think Nintendo will do the same thing Sony does with giving a console a 10 year life span.

PS2 will never die :P seriously, most people buying it are people that cant afford a next gen console. still, from time to time, PS2 still gets 1 or 2 exclusives worth playing, e.g. Persona 4.

The PS2 should finally die in 2010, at which point it would have probably sold 150 million. I think the Wii has a good chance of meeting that.

Well... there are still good games coming out for the system, (a lot of big franchises have PS2 ports, eg. Rock Band) not to mention (at least in the UK anyway) a ridiculous amount of cheap pre-owned games. I'm still playing through Persona 3 and Rogue Galaxy, and I'm waiting for Persona 4 to be released next year. (Damn EU release dates!)The PS2 isn't going to die any time soon, and I doubt Sony are going to deliberately let it die when developers are still supporting it (especially in Japan).

As for whether or not the Wii will beat it in sales... I'm not too sure. Maybe, maybe not. A lot of it could depend on whether the console keeps going for as long as the PS2 has. 140 million is a hell of a lot, and that number keeps steadily growing.

How do you know that people aren't simply replacing their older broken units?

Frankly when I sold my Wii about 6 months ago, I re bought a PS2 and felt like I had upgraded to next gen. The PS2 is better then the Wii, has more games and is cheaper. People also buy the cheaper older system for their smaller kids. If I had a 5 year old child sitting around the house, I would not go out and buy him/her a PS3 or Xbox. I'd give the kid a PS2, buy a bunch of old games and not spend more then $250 total. When the kids gets a little older, like 7-8, then I would consider getting them a newer system.

yea i dont think its just low income families because they wouldnt be able to afford the system plus games and accessories, most low-income families have to worry about just being able to pay all their bills

It all comes down to when Nintendo decides to pull the plug on the Wii. The wii is apparently selling at a faster pace, but that won't mean anything if it doesn't stay in the game as long as the PS2.

The Wii is obviously not going to catch up to the PS2. The PS2 was and still is amazing.

I still think Wii is going to fall like a rock in sales eventually. I can't see how a console with very few good games can keep on sustaining great sales month after month. It has to end at some point.

Sony pledged a 10 year life span for the PS2. It came out in 2000, which means it'll be in production at least until 2010. Perhaps longer if sales keep up. I mean other consoles have historically lasted more than a decade.

why it has to be low income families? people will spend $100s on shoes and clothing but find $400 expensive for a console.

I'm planning on picking up KH:CoM, P3:FES (I know this is from earlier this year), P4 and the RE Collection (I know this one is rather old) for the holiday season along with the current gen games I buy so to me the PS2 still has a significant amout of life left in it, more than any other console did so late in its life although I played the Sega Genesis until 2000 if I'm not mistaken .

Well g I don't know. The console is cheaper than a Wii, the library is larger than the 360's, the online is free like the ps3's. New games are priced same as DS games, used games are cheaper than a MacDonald's happy meal. it is still supported by sony, and there is a low risk of theft.

If anything the ps2 is better than all three current gen consoles.

I think that eventually, the Wii will surpass the PS2 in hardware sales. If this holiday is any indication, it's very possible that the Wii will outsell the PS2's best November of 1.2 million consoles sold. Early estimates are that the Wii will sell 1.5 million units. If that happens, the Wii can at least be said to have started off a lot better than the PS2 did and now needs to prove that it can sustain this type of momentum for several more years.

As long as Konami keeps releasing IIDX for the PS2, it will never be dead for me. That and there is still tons of games I have to play that I missed out on years ago.

As for the PS2's death, I think it may be soon. There wont be any more DBZ games on the PS2(I know DBZ isnt the most important series, but it's been one that has been with the PS2 even after last gen ended), Square seems to be pulling support after Re CoM, Sony obviously isnt really supporting it any more. Correct me if Im wrong, but isnt this suppose to be Guitar Hero's last year on the PS2? If so I'd say the PS2's days are numbered.

What has PS2 gotten this year that's worth playing? Persona 3: FES and Persona 4, I know, but what else? I know it's gotten inferior multiplatform games, like Call of Duty: World at War, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Mercenaries 2, and such... But are there any top tier games besides the two I mentioned? There probably were some JRPGs I'm forgetting.

Everyone. The PS2 appealed to everyone. It catered to everyone. With the Wii, it's just Nintendo fanboys and casual gamers with a sprinkle of niche.

Well, like you said, it got some of those big multiplats. Biggest among them being the Guitar Hero game, which have pretty been the PS2's life for the past three years. It also got a Naruto and Dragon Ball game or two. Not top tier, but they sell. There was that Yakuza game. Twisted Metal: Head On. Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis. Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters. Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories comes out tomorrow.

It had alot for everyone. The only things it didn't really have were WRPGS and RTS.

And those genres had always been weak on console until the X-box came.

Oh, you mean the fanboy in you would die cause I figured a true gamer would appreciate the different types and kinds of games available on other systems. My bad for misunderstanding that you were actually using the word gamer in its true sense. Okay, go back to your fanboyism.

The PS2 will die when it stops selling. If it still sells, Sony will still produce it, as they will still be making money. Chances are (not 100%), but Sony makes more money per console sold of the PS2 than the PS3, due to the lower cost of the parts. The only time that sales will fall is if ere are no good games being released for it. The only time there will be no good games on the system is when people will stop buying the good games.

It all comes down to how many games people buy.
