The PS2 is the best-selling console to date, having reached over 140 million units in sales by mid-2008.
During thanksgiving weekend PS2 performed well selling around 175,000 units!!!!!!!!
when will the madness end??? 2009? 2010? 2011?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
its no easy job to surpass the PS2's huge sales... i think that 2009 will be the final year for PS2 should devs stop supporting the console... still PS2 is the most successful console ever and surely has the best overall games library..
regarding the Wii depends how long Nintendo will keep supporting the console and if 3rd party devs start releasing quality titles for the console which will attract more gamers to buy the console... personally though i think Wii will continue selling and be a huge seller i dont see it surpassing the PS2 in terms of overall quality games library and units sold...
PS2 is dead. The only people buying it are low income families. Blue-Sky

Pretty much the PS2 has been dead for years, 2-3 games a year that are worth playing doesn't count as sony supporting it. Thing died long ago, only ones left are people trying to make a quick buck out of it.

I wont say dead for YEARS, but its last big game was God of War 2 and that was just last year.Well... there are still good games coming out for the system, (a lot of big franchises have PS2 ports, eg. Rock Band) not to mention (at least in the UK anyway) a ridiculous amount of cheap pre-owned games. I'm still playing through Persona 3 and Rogue Galaxy, and I'm waiting for Persona 4 to be released next year. (Damn EU release dates!)The PS2 isn't going to die any time soon, and I doubt Sony are going to deliberately let it die when developers are still supporting it (especially in Japan).
As for whether or not the Wii will beat it in sales... I'm not too sure. Maybe, maybe not. A lot of it could depend on whether the console keeps going for as long as the PS2 has. 140 million is a hell of a lot, and that number keeps steadily growing.

How do you know that people aren't simply replacing their older broken units?
yea i dont think its just low income families because they wouldnt be able to afford the system plus games and accessories, most low-income families have to worry about just being able to pay all their bills
It all comes down to when Nintendo decides to pull the plug on the Wii. The wii is apparently selling at a faster pace, but that won't mean anything if it doesn't stay in the game as long as the PS2.
I still think Wii is going to fall like a rock in sales eventually. I can't see how a console with very few good games can keep on sustaining great sales month after month. It has to end at some point. AvIdGaMeR444Yup when the release wii 2

I'm planning on picking up KH:CoM, P3:FES (I know this is from earlier this year), P4 and the RE Collection (I know this one is rather old) for the holiday season along with the current gen games I buy so to me the PS2 still has a significant amout of life left in it, more than any other console did so late in its life although I played the Sega Genesis until 2000 if I'm not mistaken .
Well g I don't know. The console is cheaper than a Wii, the library is larger than the 360's, the online is free like the ps3's. New games are priced same as DS games, used games are cheaper than a MacDonald's happy meal. it is still supported by sony, and there is a low risk of theft.
If anything the ps2 is better than all three current gen consoles.
It's possible the Wii will beat the PS2. But unless it's line up starts shaping up, part of my inner gamer will die if the Wii out sells the PS2.vashkey
In that case you might die if you only knew what category the overwhelming majority of PS2 owners belong to.

A console with a weak game line up selling better than what is probably the best console ever? Why wouldnt it die?

Everyone. The PS2 appealed to everyone. It catered to everyone. With the Wii, it's just Nintendo fanboys and casual gamers with a sprinkle of niche.[QUOTE="CreepyBacon"][QUOTE="Blue-Sky"]PS2 is dead. The only people buying it are low income families. Ragnarok1051

/threadIt may have had a little for everyone, but it's still mostly casual gamers. The best selling consoles have always been dominated by casuals.
What has PS2 gotten this year that's worth playing? Persona 3: FES and Persona 4, I know, but what else? I know it's gotten inferior multiplatform games, like Call of Duty: World at War, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Mercenaries 2, and such... But are there any top tier games besides the two I mentioned? There probably were some JRPGs I'm forgetting.DeathScape666Well, like you said, it got some of those big multiplats. Biggest among them being the Guitar Hero game, which have pretty been the PS2's life for the past three years. It also got a Naruto and Dragon Ball game or two. Not top tier, but they sell. There was that Yakuza game. Twisted Metal: Head On. Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis. Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters. Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories comes out tomorrow.

It had alot for everyone. The only things it didn't really have were WRPGS and RTS.
And those genres had always been weak on console until the X-box came.

Oh, you mean the fanboy in you would die cause I figured a true gamer would appreciate the different types and kinds of games available on other systems. My bad for misunderstanding that you were actually using the word gamer in its true sense. Okay, go back to your fanboyism.

I wont say dead for YEARS, but its last big game was God of War 2 and that was just last year. can I get a rogue galaxy!?The PS2 will die when it stops selling. If it still sells, Sony will still produce it, as they will still be making money. Chances are (not 100%), but Sony makes more money per console sold of the PS2 than the PS3, due to the lower cost of the parts. The only time that sales will fall is if ere are no good games being released for it. The only time there will be no good games on the system is when people will stop buying the good games.
It all comes down to how many games people buy.
