Playstation - 102 million

Nintendo 64 - 32.93 million

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Playstation 2 - 153.6 million

Xbox - 24 million

GameCube - 22 million

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Playstation 3 - 81 million

Xbox 360 - 80 million

Wii - 100 million

Sony Dominated with PS1 and PS2. PS3 lost a lot players to Xbox 360 but some how so many casual players came from no where(Nintendo Wii).

Now when next gen has started now suddenly PS4 dominates and Nintendo players are gone???

I don´t get it.

5th generation - Sony dominates, hardcore dominates, casual dead.

6th generation - Sony dominates, hardcore dominates, casual dead

7th generation - Nintendo dominates, hardcore is split, casual higher than ever

8th generation - Sony dominates, hardcore dominates, casual dead

1)Where did Nintendo Wii players go??? 100 million and suddenly Wii U flops???

2)Is and was casual just temporary phenomenon???

7th was very interesting generation. Microsoft stole Sony gamers and gave great competitions and Nintendo first time got his domination and so many casual gamers came out. Now suddenly Casual gamers are gone, Nintendo down and Sony back dominate. Or now Xbox One and Wii U split casual gamers while Sony dominates with hardcore?

With the exception of the Wii (which relied on tons of casual gamers and mass market appeal) every single Nintendo console sold worse than the one before. WiiU is selling worse than Gamecube which sold worse than N64 which sold worse than SNES which sold worse than NES.

If you look at the sales of Nintendo's "Hardcore" games you can get a better idea of how they are losing fans. Skyward Sword and Metroid Prime 3 sold worse than Windwaker and Prime 1, despite the Wii user base being 4 to 5 times bigger than Gamecube.

The core has been steadily leaving Nintendo for generations. Their consoles just aren't good enough for core gamers. (though they are very welcome as secondary systems)

I wish they;d just move their awesome games to the powerful systems where the core gamers are (Xbox, PS and PC)

But what you think why casual gaming was so BIG AND HIGH with Wii but now it´s again low? So, this casual was just temporary phenomenon? temporary phenomenon like Justin Bieber, or 3D cinema or something? Maybe Wii sold that much because it was something new? Look at avatar 3D, biggest box office of all time because of 3D.

What you think?

I dunno, just the hype that accompanies a gimmick. I don't think anyone really knows why one thing takes off, and another similar thing doesn't. I'm sure Nintendo were hoping WiiU would catch the same hype and buzz as Wii, but it just didn't happen.

The rise of smartphones and tablets for casual gamers probably has a lot to do with it, if I had to guess.

Yeah. I guess smartphones and tablets took Nintendo casual gamers.

To be fair, back in 2006 Nintendo Wii Sport looked awesome and really something very awesome. No wonder why Wii sold that much. Too bad it did not have any rank system or online gaming.

You are delusional to think that the mainstream gaming on the PS4 is not casual.

a lot of those Wii sales were from people who were just interested in the Wii's motion controls. They weren't interested in the games.

If you look at the software sales you'll see what the actual install base was.

Casuals didn't come from no where on Nintendo systems. You could say that non-gamers did which are completely different. Casuals were very prominent in the 6th generation and every generation, heck system wars complained about them constantly just as they do now saying they were "ruining" gaming.

Casual games are in no way dead, people just are not using a console to play them. Phones and Tables are replacing dedicated consoles (just like they did with cameras, PDAs, GPS, books, MP3 player, etc) for casual gamers who don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a handheld or wii or something. You see the same thing home consoles. All of the devices you used to have in your living room (Movie player, media streamer, audio player, DVR, gaming console) are all being combined into one. Sony and Microsoft are just in a better place to be the ones to sell these devices than anyone else.

But Xbox and Playstation are also casual platforms. Difference is Nintendo is specifically aimed at children and xbox, those with the mind of a child.

ITT: we claim franchises and user-bases are casual to insult them.

Ok, I'll play along too. Final Fantasy and Halo are casual franchises for casual gamers. :O

It will be sad to see Nintendo stop making consoles and make handhelds only.

If we're defining "casual" as someone who doesn't play very much, or doesn't care about the industry very much (ie doesn't check gaming news often, etc.), then casual gamers don't simply come in the form of Wii Fit players. They come in forms where they play only FPSers, or only Sports Games, or plays only "movie-games", which makes up a large portion of Xbox and Playstation players too. So don't just lump casuals with Nintendo consoles - it's only more apparent because it's family oriented. But I assure you, casuals can also be teens, etc.

Nintendo is the best for that very reason: they are enjoyed by all gamers, old and young, casual and hardcore. They are among the very few in the industry who can actually achieve that lofty goal.

nintendo abandoned the casuals imo...

wiifit and just dance is the only games that still for casuals....maybe wii party(havnt played it)

but wii sports is much more skilled based now with the addition of motion plus.....grandpa and soccor moms would have trouble playing wii sports club online imo....i know my parants are having big issues.

mario kart will still be casual based thankfully because the wii Wheel will be back. and smash brosU looks like it will be brawl 2.5 so it wont be challenging like melee or smash 64 imo.

Casuals are the first time gamers, Wii Sports and Mario party crowd.

Mainstream gamers are the ones who play Halo, COD, GTA, Fifa, Madden, etc.

Two different, distinct types of gamer.

Personally I've always equated them to be the same thing. People that don't really care about games a whole lot, but they're playing them casually.

Just because something is casual doesn't mean the hardcore community can't enjoy it, and no, mario isn't challenging at all. I know a casual gamer that got 100% on both New super mario world and Donkey kong country returns by herself and the Dark Souls game play confuses her, and she panics when she see's more than one enemy. Her favorite games are cell phone and tablet games.

And no, mario isn't the best. It's worshiped like it was by it's fans but it's not. That's entirely debatable. If anything Rayman is better than mario imo.

No she didn't. She just plays games that you collect stuff on the phones and tablet so when she realizes there's collectibles she collects them all.

I'd be reluctant to call her a casual if she !00%'s games like Mario and Donkey Kong. While they're not extremely difficult, it's still quite a challenge. None of my casual gamer friends could do that.

And no, mario isn't the best. It's worshiped like it was by it's fans but it's not. That's entirely debatable. If anything Rayman is better than mario imo.

I think you're under-rating your "casual" friend. Try it yourself and see, instead of relying on others to make assessments. I've played both in their recent respective series and to get 100% completion, they're both extremely challenging, even for dedicated gamers.

I think your affection for other companies or off-hand information has clouded your judgement.

Casual gaming isn't dead.. Look at CoD it's still alive and kicking. So are sports games, and So it's mario. Yes, Mario is very very casual.

That's just wildly inaccurate. Mario games appeal to both casuals and hardcore gamers. Getting all the gold coins/hidden stars in any given Mario platformer is harder than any Dark/Demon's Soul game ever made, and takes more skill.

Nintendo is the best for that very reason: they are enjoyed by all gamers, old and young, casual and hardcore. They are among the very few in the industry who can actually achieve that lofty goal.

Nice effort by your casual friend. Did she use superguide?

No she didn't. She just plays games that you collect stuff on the phones and tablet so when she realizes there's collectibles she collects them all.

I'd be reluctant to call her a casual if she !00%'s games like Mario and Donkey Kong. While they're not extremely difficult, it's still quite a challenge. None of my casual gamer friends could do that.

It's not difficult if you think about it, just takes time and it's kinda honestly tedious. People like me just finish one game and wanna move on to the next, people like her try to make the most of it, that and she's stubborn as hell. But she doesn't like games that are not too simple, like she wouldn't play RPG's, but likes FPS like CoD.

Not really though. I mean if you're really talking about 100% then you will face some tough levels:

Mario: http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/11/27/super-mario-3d-world-walkthrough-crown-champions-road-green-stars-stamp

Donkey Kong: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpT3AUYI2I8

Honestly, I don't know any casual that could do that level. That kind of patience and stubbornness makes her pretty hardcore.

No casuals are still playing with their Wii ...there's no incentives for them to move to Wii U. All the stuff Nintendo release for the Wii U - Sports Club, Wii Fit U - similar/same (didn't even make an effort to improve visual) as what they already got with Wii.

But she's not, trust me. And she really sucked at first lol she didn't do everything like in one day. Took her a few weeks because she didn't play much at a time. I remember that stage (DK), one of my favorites. But the game in general was probably a lot easier by yourself than with someone.

Hey, practice makes perfect. She did it, so she's hardcore in my books.

She sounds more hardcore than you do by this description.

Sony=Lost billions due to playstation brand.

Nintendo=Made over $28 billion profit since Playstation launched.

I wonder who I would want to be out of those 2 companies...

Casuals moved to tablets, smart phones, and some just stopped gaming.

The Wii was a fad where people who didn't even like games bought it to play Wii Sports.

So yeah casual gamers aren't the kind of people that will be camping out for a new console at launch or even be hyped.

They never really had an interest in the Wii, it was the "Wii Phenomenon craze" that made everyone have to get one.

The Wii was a common dust collector after the Wii Sports died down for a lot people.

I think this post hits the nail on the head! With rubbish such as the Wii Sports and Wii Fit, the Wii ended up appealing more to non-gamers than the gamers themselves! With each console generation since the 5th Nintendo has lost fans to either Playstation or Xbox, but the fact that so many non-gamers bought the Wii made this seem a lot less apparent with the last gen.
