Well, 7 means good. So I guess that's where A comes from.

8 is above 7. AA is above A.

doesnt the E stand for exclusive? i really have no ideabu the way ive been seeing it is A=8.5 AA=9 AAA=9.5 and AAAA=10. Se whenever i see AAE its and exclusive title that got 9 but thats only the way i see it.

Edit: wow i was wrong

7.0-7.5 = A (AE)

8.0-8.5 = AA (AAE)

9.0-9.5 = AAA (AAAE)

10 = AAAA (AAAAE)

The system is pretty obnoxious, isn't it? Why can't we just use the number system?

yeah seriously, 7/10=A just doesn't make any sense in terms of grade point.

The business world.

Publishers rate their titles in order of the expected sales value.

They use C,B,A,AA,AAA,AAAA. It is to help distributors and retailers see at a glance which titles the publisher is focusing on and thus which they should focus on without knowing all about each game.

The 'E' for exclusive monikerhas been added by SW.

I dont think they use AAAA in the business world. They assume all AAA games should be of the highest possible quality given their investment. Generally, it doesn't happen, but theres no budget range beyond AAA.

Well some actually do, Ubisoft springs to mind. Anyway, that is where the system originated from and was adopted by gamers.
