We all know there has to be a basement for every ceiling, so one console (by math) must be the bottom of the pit. The wii has brought motion controls so it cant be them, sony has brought blu-ray and the cell with constant console graphics kings so it cant be them, and im not considering handhelds or phones, so that leaves my vote for the 360. The 360 is holding back the industry imo. lets hear your thoughts and votes and discuss

ALL 3. :P In a way it's good though, less money/time the developers have to waste.

Kind of hard to prove one wrong when that person doesn't even have a reason why that console is holding back the industry lol.

None of them are holding the industry back. Its just kind of sad that you would make a new account just to make a troll topic just to hide your internet identity, like it actually matters

Why would I even bother trying to debate someone that makes a alt account and the first post was this fanboy thread.

The PC is the only system not holding back the industry IMO. I know you said console, but the fact is all the systems have flaws. As for the 360, it did bring a unified network infastructure to the consoles, standard wireless controllers, network features, marketplace, etc.

None are holding it back, competition breeds innovation, as each try to one-up the others, it's called capitalism, you should try it.

The Wii.

Never before have I seen a console with 90% crap library. It's apparently the best selling console currrently, so the bar of quality has been lowered thanks to Nintendo's laziness.

Also, Microsoft and Sony are both wasting time and resources on stupid motion controls, Xbox360 has Avatars like the Wii's characters, both of which are stupid and useless.

Oh and  @ "can't be PS3 since they bought Cell", blu-ray maybe, but the Cell is a waste of time/money.

A single core P4 and a GeForce 8 series card with more ram and the PS3 would have no trouble triumphing the 360 in visuals in every multiplat and exclusive.

If you consider that 360 is holding back the graphics industry, then PS3 is equally at fault too. While it's true that PS3 is capable of graphics of higher quality than 360, adapting the graphics to the difficulty that is PS3 programming efficiently is not nearly as simple as changing a file's extension.

Seriously though, no console is. If anything the Wii as brought a sense of sobriety to the industry. Shiny visuals aren't making games any better and while I still play my PC a lot it's not because of games like Crysis, which is needlessly bloated. PC gamers like to pretend that games are being held back by consoles but time and time again the PC as been shown to add nothing to the mix. Piracy is not what the developers make it out to be but if anything the PC is the source of evil. AC II and it's absurd DRM show this. Even Crysis 2 is heading to consoles. If the PC were all there was the industry would be in a world of trouble. We can all pretend that piracy isn't a problem but if games were only on the PC developers would be going under left and right.

So PC gamers, act all high and mighty, we all know the score. The PC is introducing draconian measures and PC developers struggle to stay in the game.

Unfortunately, a good amount of developers have convinced themselves that it's the other way around.

The PC.... It won't get Bluetooth controllers anytime soon. No integrated motion controls, no games have been released on Blu-ray for PC yet, 1080p is too standard on games (most of the industry is still 720p and under). No gimmicks integrated into games like motion controls and btw the post is completely sarcastic

I personaly feel the industry is going to outgrow itself if it continues this rapid advancement, hell we still had people working mircacles on the PS2 late into it's life, longer console life cycles means lower dev costs, higher profits and better games. I'm in no rush to see any new systems come out, each still has plenty to offer us, especially with NATAL and Move on the horizon.

Welcome to Gamespot.com! Anyway, that specific question will get different answers depending on who you are asking. Ask a game professional and a person walking across the street and their answers will contradict.

none. whats holding the industry back is a market this is not big enough to support it properly. this in turn makes publishers far more hesitant to take risks and stick to a formula. if the install base for all platforms was significantly bigger then publishers and devs would be more willing to take more risks. whats also not doing the industry any favours is the whole "hit" model that publishers have adopted. instead of making and budgeting for many different markets..whether they are big or small...there all just trying to get their next just dance or the next GTA or COD...the next big hit. theres nothing wrong with trying to get a hit...but publishers shouldnt be depenging on it completly to make money.

The Wii is venturing out with motion controls. OLD. It has piss poor graphics/hardware OLD. However atleast it's making motion controls mainstream and reaching far more people. So it's at the top.

The 360 has crap hardware, it brought online gaming to the mainstream though, as with the xbox before it.

The PS3 has crap hardware (Yes teh cell) but it brought ... movies to consoles? No that's wrong it's done nothing but copy others.

In summary, all the above are holding back the games industry, well the Wii is trying to take it in a slightly different direction.

360 is holding back the industry as much as PS3 since both have the same power.

Obviously consoles (in general) hold back PC. Crysis (2007) is still the best looking game ont there. Im pretty sure if most games werent developed with consoles in mind, there would be many games looking better than Crysis atm.

The pc is holding back gaming, the huge smug cloud above all the PC gamers houses are destroying the environment and letting harsh UV rays down onto the game developers! Seriously tho, nothing is holding it back. But you pc guys.. you take away all consoles, guess what, gaming dies! :P and you have nothing to play on your super computer.

They're all contributing in their own way.

The Wii has contributed the mass appeal of motion controls. For better or worse, it's something the public is buying.

The PS3 has taken the most traditional approach by relying heavily on hardware. But it's Sony so I can't fault them for relying on that strength. Disc storage space and processing power would have been improved by someone eventually. It might as well have been Sony.

The 360, on the other hand is relying on what MS knows best: operating systems and online. They're doing an excellent job of pushing the boundaries of what an online community means in the console world. In doing so, they've adopted a holistic approach to gaming that neither of the competitors have quite grasped yet.

Take away PCs and you have nowhere to develop the games you play on your consoles.

That and lets not forget that PCs have innovated the industry far more than consoles have, and are being held back now. If it wasn't for consoles most games would have mod support, but since people will eat up DLC, companies are exploiting that now and PC's are caught in the **** console people will take.

That and PC gaming does not need consoles while consoles need PCs

The 360 set the standard for online gaming services. PSN wouldn't be where it is today if Sony hadn't gotten ideas from XBL. I remember when the PlayStation Store wasn't so streamlined, and I remember the time before trophies. All three companies have continued greatly to gaming as an establishment.

The Xbox 360 is one of the new-gen consoles and alongwith the Ps3 define cutting-edge graphics and gameplay. And the Xbox 360 controller trumps every other one out there. The Ps3 having brought blu-ray to us is a mammoth that has a bright future. The Wii is holding back the developers in terms of graphics. When the Wii HD releases the game industry can move forward.

Both 360 and ps3 hold back the industry, their graphics capabilities are limited in comparison with the pc. PS3 does not always have the best graphics, more like rarely when the x360 version suprisingly looks worse. But overall both consoles are holding back the graphics capabilities of the pc. As for wii? Sorry i was talking for the three dominant systems and ps3/x360/pc titles.

None of them.. But if we are to compare.. I would say the 360 and PS3.. Because they are basically the same as the last consoles with some new hardware pushed into it.. This isn't to suggest they are bad, but its far from innovative.. When something like the Wii took a huge risk in a technology never successfully done before.. It just pisses me off that after its so successful they havn't made imporvements on the system.. Such as adding a hard drive.. A more in depth multiplayer system.. Not even a damned Dvd player.
