This means developers where the first games were AAA quality. This isnt just limited to recently or review scores, im talking about the general quality of a game.

I've been playing the Witcher and just heard it was the developers first game. Damn, thats really impressive.

What do you guys think?

Just a side note, i remember reading that the first few games Nintendo made were pretty mediocre. But you could talk about their subsidaries.

i dont think you understood what i mean (my fault for not making it clear).

I didnt mean which games, i meant which developers made an amazing game on their first attempt. All the ones you listed are games when those devs were already proven.

CD PROJEKT red definately delivered the goods. their support for the game has also been top notch (a free overhaul is always welcome). before they used to translate biowares and black isles games into russian i think. if i remember correctly bioware, bless em, saw what they were trying to do with the witcher and gave them a free licence for the aurora engine. of course red then went and rewrote 85% of the engine...but it was a nice gesture none the less :P. valve certainly delivered big time with half life. i may be mistaken here...but i think marathon on the mac was bungies first game. that was a goodun also. infinity ward before they were IW. they made MOH allied assault....dam fine game at the time. blizzard also did the business. westwood (RIP) ion storm dallas or austin.....which ever one made DE1 (i think it was austin...i could search for it but im too lazy :P). daikatana was released bu the other crowd....but we dont talk about that. relic of course..they made homeworld....top notch game (though i always preferred cataclysim). gas powered games with dungeon siege....lots of fun.

Crytek comes to mind as a developer whose intentions and technical ability were transparent from the beginning.
Though I'm not their biggest supporter, I can't deny the quality of their productions.

At GS:
92 - Far Cry
95 - Crysis
90 - Crysis: Warhead
?? - Crysis 2

do you want the sequal done right or do you want it done fast? im sure they have something in the oven...but i would be surprised to see anythign new from them in 2010.....mid to late 2011 id say is the earliest were going to get a sequal for the witcher.

the thing i love (well loved...not going to be true anymore) was that crytek would basically make a game so advanced that no hardware could do it justice at launch. its what i would call a F it game. they just say "here our budget....lets go nuts...screw the system requirements". the thing i hate about crytek is that they just make really stupid mistakes from time to time. they have this bizarre habit of making a great game with interesting gameplay..and then ruining it by introducing stupid alien/mutant killer ninja things.

Retro Studios jumps readily to mind. The Metroid Prime Trilogy was brilliant from start to finish, plus they had to reinvent Metroid from a 2D sidescrolling adventure game to an FPS/FPA full 3D experience.

I've heard UT3 was terrible, and that most fans just went back to UT2004, but I don't know if that mind set changed after the huge patch and free expainsion EPIC released for UT3 though, and TF2 and UT are totally different on all fronts. ;)

You are correct.

Half-true. They were a group of existing devs... probably some Godfather/BFME people. EARS had a bunch of scattered dev teams, mostly in one building. The floor they are on was Tiger Woods before it became Dead Space, IIRC. Dead Space was just a random game team like any other before they got an official name. I don't know about Bungie, actually.. if they started with Myth (PC) or Marathon (Mac) I'd say hell yeah, but they apparently had 3 or 4 games before even Marathon. RPG's and top down shooters that I had never heard of. Blizzard.. yeah I'd say they had an awesome early pedigree. The Lost Vikings and Rock N Roll Racing as their first games, that works! Bioware's first game was Shattered Steel. Anybody else know anything about that game? I remember it being another 'mech game, but never played it. Right after that was Baldur's Gate, so they're close to awesomeness. Looking Glass Studios (now Irrational, now 2K Boston) was awesome right from the start. F-22 Interceptor on the Gensis aaaand Ultima Underworld on the PC! Soon after came System Shock 1 and Terra Nova. Origin opened up with Ultima. Valve's first game was honest to goodness Half-Life. Yeah, they're in. IMO though almost all of the 'good' studios out of a question like this are going to cheat in a way - they're mostly going to be holdovers from an older studio that already had experience in the field. For instance, Infinity Ward's first game was Call of Duty... but before that most of IW came from 2015, where they made MOH: AA. And other games before that. Turn 10 Studios' first game was Forza, but they were created by Microsoft with the express purpose of making an awesome racing game. Crytek and CD Projekt RED are good ones, though. (though CDP was also created out of an existing company to make games :))

lol knew it! first game credited on wikipedia was Godfather and Simpsons. forgot about Simpsons.

also on mobygames: http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/visceral-games/developed-by/

godfather, tiger woods and BFME. pretty much what i thought. the Sims credits are a bit misleading though, there's a Maxis studio in the same building.
