Hi all. I have always prefered swords in games rather than guns - I prefer fighting with them and the kind of games with swords in them tend to be mroe the kind that I like (eg. Zelda, Final Fantasy X, etc.) There are some shooter games that I like, but ultimately I've never found guns/explosives that cool.

This is NOT a poll on the merits. Obviously, a modern soldier with an assault rifle would kill a swordsman. It's a poll on which you prefer to have in games.

And please, no comments like "What if I prefer games with snowboards/footballs/dinosaurs etc." This is off topic and irrelevant, and this isnt the right forum for that kindof thing.

If you prefer bows and arrows/clubs/rocket launchers, then "other" is the right category :)

Gunblades :P

Nah, probably swords, because they are in more adventure games and I find adventure games to be my favorite genre.

Swords. Games like DS and Zelda make great use of them and I prefer melee oriented combat.

Aww, so this isn't a variation of that show, Deadliest Warriors? :P

Swords are more awesome, and the fantasy setting is just so much more interesting. Besides, you can have swords that fire lasers (e.g. Zelda) but I've never seen a shooter where there are guns that shoot out swords. Hmm, that might make for an interesting game.....

Swords but I dont like so much the idea of a game set in present or future times that the sword is the main weapon. In those kind of games I would like guns first and then swords.

Swords, because they require more skills than point and shoot from a distance.

I said other I pick Pole Weopons like Halbards because they give some distance and they are very deadly. Because it has an Axe blade. It also has a Spike on top for stabbing and you can still be 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters) away from your enemy.

Emphasis on melee weapons. Why?

Because too many guns will turn any rpg into a story based tps.

Thanks for all the replies - keep them coming!

I must say I'm positively surprised by the responses. The vast majority of my friends prefer games like COD/Halo/other games which may not be fps but which definitely have guns as the main emphasis, and I was expecting (though not hoping for) a similar response on gamespot.

It's because many people here are somewhat hardcore gamers. We've already tried gunplay and while it's fun, it always boils you down to one kind of gamestyle (more or less). That means only for action afficionados.

probably swords for me, guns are fun but getting kills with swords is just more satisfying, and always feels like it takes more skills even if that isnt true.

For practical 'self defense' i would easily say guns but a sword doesnt need ammo, hmmm, tough choice.

Guns if given a cover mechanic and swords if the battles look epic and actually take skill.

I'm an amateur gun buff, despite not owning my own (but having fired a few xP). It's not that I like shooters more than anything, but I prefer the WW2 era onwards in terms of setting. There are few times I find fantasy done "right" that I enjoy. Dragon Age is a great example. Love that game.

And though I love sci-fi, I hate lasers. Primitive projectiles ftw.

Considering my recent fixation for the hack n slash genre i'm going with swords. Not that I hate shooters, but there getting to the point of being instant gratification without any of the complexity and rewarding gameplay experience that I get from a Ninja Gaiden or the silky smooth Bayonetta.

I get a good range of visceral(Ninja Gaiden), spectacle(god of war), and some styIe(Bayonetta/Devil May Cry). Looking forward to the next big hack n slash(come on ITAGAKI!)

Edit- although two of those games(Bayo and DMC) have guns as well :P

HAHAHA I love that scene. Epic movie! I would go with guns personally. But swords aren't that far behind. With that said, I didn't like the latest Indiana Jones movie as much as the previous ones. I guess the whole [SPOILER ALERT!!!] *A*l*i*e*n*s* [END SPOILER!!] thing got to me. It was just too new and different from the previous movies in that sense.
